HEAD COACH: TOM KENDALL (4ih season at California, 56-42)
The California(PA) Vulcans enter the con
fines of McComb Fieldhouse with an 11-8
overall and 4-2 PSAC West record. After
their commanding 81-58 victoiy over Clarion
on Wednesday, head coach Tom Kendall’s
squad has now won as many games as they
did in the entire 1997-98 season, when they
went 11-15.
The Vulcans, first in the conference in
team rebounding margin (+9.2 rpg), wrapped
up the first half of PSAC action with a 4-2
ledger, dropping contests to Shippensburg
(82-65) and Indiana (74-59).
Last
Wednesday, they defeated Clarion, 81-59,
benefitting from a 26-point and 14-rebound
performance by sophomore center Shujuane
Brown.
The Cal offense is led by a trio of scorers
averaging in double figures, including senior
forward Heather Corby, who also leads the
PSAC in rebounding (13.3 rpg) and in blocks
(67, 3.53 bpg). The conference’s secondbest scorer at 18.8 points per contest, she
had 16 points and 17 rebounds in the win
over Clarion.
Earlier this season against
Edinboro, Corby led all scorers with 30
points, 13 rebounds, and five blocks... senior

guard Shalonda Byas contributed 11 points
versus Clarion. She averages 14.7 points per
game, and put up 15 points against the Scots
the first time around... Shujuane Brown was
the high-scorer for the Vulcans against
Clarion with 26 points. A strong presence on
the blocks. Brown averages 10.1 points and
8.1 rebounds each time out... a pair of fresh
man guards, Cindy Dove and Rachel Hall,
solidify the Cal backcourt. Dove adds 7.2
points per game and currently posts a teamhigh 73 assists... Hall scored 12 points
against the Fighting Scots in the first half of
the conference season. She averages 4.6
points and 2.5 rebounds per game... sopho
more guard Liz Monroe has started in 11 of
19 games this season, and averages just
over seven points per game. Monroe leads
the Vulcans in long-distance shooting, with 28
made three-pointers this season... forward
Vaniah Palmer averages 4.3 points per
game, and has appeared in all 19 contests...
freshman forward Mollie Manley recorded a
big game against Edinboro earlier this sea
son, shooting 5 of 6 from the floor for 10
points. She averages 4.1 points per game.

Marin Hightower to illness. Despite the
efforts of Jessica Rowe and Meghan Miller,
who recorded 28 and 20 points, respective
ly, Edinboro could not stop the Vulcans’
attack.

EDDmORO BASKETBAU AT A GLANCE
The Fighting Scots, 14-6 overall, are 91 while at home, but have struggled outside
of McComb Fieldhouse, posting a 3-4
away-game record.
In updated PSAC statistics, Edinbcro
leads the conference in three-point fsesd
goal percentage, shooting 36.4-percent.
The Scots are also third in scoring offense
(76.8 points per game).

THE LAST TIME OUT
Last Wednesday, the Fighting Scots
were unable to shake their on-the-road
woes, as they fell by the 87-74 margin to
Slippery Rock University. The Rock shot
51.7-percent from the floor with three play
ers scoring in double-figures, including
Heather Kearney, who recorded her 13th
double-double of the season. The Scots,
held to just 38-percent shooting, fought
back after being down as much as 24
points in the second half, but were unable
to make up the total difference.

The Fightini: Scots
SCOUTINS THE SCOTS
Junior forward Marin Hightower reas
sumed her spot underneath the basket two
games ago after being sidelined due to ill
ness for close to a whole month. In those
two games, Hightower picked up where
she had left off, leading the way for the
Scots with 17 and 20 points, respectively.
She now averages 19.8 points and 8.4
rebounds per game... Jessica Rowe has
proven without a doubt that she is not
afraid to shoot the ball, putting up 25 field
goals attempts (for a total 17 points) versus
Slippery Rock. One of the best on the
squad at creating plays, Rowe leads the
team with 66 assists in addition to scoring
an average 14.9 points per game. Rowe
was selected the PSAC West Player of the
Week (1/25) for the second consecutive
week after helping the Scots to wins oveir
Indiana(PA) and Lock Haven... senior
Meghan Miller was limited to just nine field
goal attempts against Slippery Rock, hitting
two, including one three-pointer, for a total
five points. Miller continues to lead the
PSAC in field goal percentage outside the
arc, shooting 42.9-percent (45-105). She
leads the Scots with 50 steals for the sea
son... senior center Kelli Torboli had her
ninth double-double of the' year against
Slippery Rock, connecting for 11 points and
gathering 10 caroms. Hampered by back
problems, Torboli has still managed to post
an average 10.9 points and 10.1 rebounds
per game... Dana Polakowski averages
6.6 points and 6.9 rebounds each time out

for the Fighting Scots. The 5-11 junior has
a knack for getting rebounds - she
grabbed 17 boards against Lock Haven
and 13 caroms in the Scots’ two wins over
Lake Superior State and Shippensburg...
key reserve Korle Morton came off,the
bench to score nine points versus Slippery
Rock on Wednesday.
Morton averages
6.‘2 points and 4.2 rebounds a contest...
speedy sophomore guard Julie McNees
has’seen steadily increasing playing time
since the semester break. She scored two
points and grabbed three rebounds on the
road at Slippery Rock... providing support
in the frontcourt is sophomore Kim Vay.’
Vay averages 6.2 poin*-s and 4.8 rebounds
pec garne... a string
other players who
have seen the court o. at least a few min
utes of quality time include Cara Peyton
and Michelle Bowen.
Peyton, a junior
guard, has appeared in 10 games, and
shot 2 for 3 from the floor for four points
against Slippery Rock. Bowen, a freshman
center, has seen spot duty down low, and
has continued to progress.

Edinboro Ui\ivERsnT Athletic Fend Drive
Dear Friends of the Fighting Scots;

List

Helving accepted the challen: e of leading Edinboro
Un..'ersity’s athletic depart
ment into the 21st century, I
am excited about spear
heading this annual athletic
fund drive for the direct ben
efit of our student-athletes.
With the growing cost of
education, the importance of
private funding for our ath
letic program is vital to the
continued success we have
all enjoyed here at Edinboro University. With no
state appropriation for athletic scholarships, we
depend on labor-intensive, fundraising events, as
well as the generous support of our alumni and
friends, to supplement our scholarship-fund.
The efforts of our University employees during
our summer camp season continue to be the major
sot *s of our financial development. Although the
Ur f'sity has enjoyed athletic success in the
1990s, our sports teams continue to be funded well
below the National Collegiate Athlefic Association
(NCAA) allowable limit. Overall, it is the goal of
Edinboro University to give the bfest quality educa
tion and athletic experience possible to our studentathletes. We not only want our students to have the
opportunity to compete, but to be the very best they
can be.
At Edinboro University, we will do everything pos
sible to generate the resources necessary to stay
competitive, but we need your ongoing support to
continue to improve upon our rich athletic tradition.
We are excited about hearing from you soon, as
you join us on our mission to provide a quality ath
letic program for the entire Edinboro family.
Sincerely,

_

What is the Fighting Scot Booster Club? Providing support
to Edinboro University’s athletic program Is the Fighting Scot Booster Club.
Organized In the early 1980’s, It was formed around a core of devoted, loyal alum
ni, friends and representatives of Edinboro University. It Is an advisory group ded
icated to the support and advancement of Fighting Scot athletics. The club Is the
vehicle by which Individuals, businesses, and corporations may. make contribu
tions to the overall athletic program or designate a portion to a specific sport.
The club’s primary mission Is to provide financial support for the athletic teams
while promoting community awareness and involvement in the entire program. Its
objective of providing athletic scholarships in support of student-athletes and their
goals, parallels the department’s mission of furthering community awareness of all
athletic teams, as well as rallying support around University advocates.
i
Why Support the Booster Club? Your generous membership
affords Edinboro University the opportunity to offer a higher quality athletic and
academic experience to its student-athletes. State monies are not available for
athletic scholarships, making the Booster Club and the department’s fundraising
efforts the sole means of raising money for yearly scholarships and endowments.
With your Assistance, contihuing our winning tradition - as well as assisting in the
development of our student-athletes as leaders of tomorrow - will be a reality!

THE GAME STORY
Does Edinboro have another upset left?
The Fighting Scots have already knocked
off nationally-ranked foes St. Rose, Central
State and lndiana(Pa.). The lUP contest
occurred ten days ago, and left the Scots
with plenty of life in the PSAC race. But
Wednesday’s 92-86 loss at Slippery Rock
cast a shadow of doubt as the Boro begins
second half action.
Coach Greg
Walcavich’s team is now 10-9 overall and
3-3 in league play, tied with Slippery Rock
while trailing lUP and California(Pa.), the
frontrunners at 5-1 each, and 4-2 Clarion.
The Vulcans, meanwhile, have run off five

HEAD COACH: Bill Brown (55-21, 3rd year; 175-137, 13th year overall)
California(Pa.) is the co-leader of the
PSAC West with a 5-1 ledger, and is 15-5
overall ... the Vulcans feature a rarity, as
all five starters are averaging double fig
ures in scoring. That adds up to 79.9 ppg.,
a figure which ranks second in the confer
ence in scoring average ... Cal has sur
vived the loss of standout guard Vincent
Graham. The senior was lost for the sea
son due to a knee injury after ten games ...
Cal’s leading scorer is Seth Martin. The
6’8” sophomore played a year ago at Ohio
University, and has adjusted nicely to
Division II ball, averaging 15.9 ppg., along
with 6.9 rpg. Martin is shooting 56.0 per
cent from the floor, although he brings just
a 45.9 percent chart from the line ... Martin
is joined in the frontcourt by 6’8” senior
Eric Watson (12.8 ppg., 8.8 rpg.) and 6’6”,
240 lb. senior Stewart Davis (10.6 ppg.,
7.2 rpg.). Watson was a first team All-

PSAC West selection a year ago, and
owns 40 blocked shots. Davis is shooting
54.6 percent from the floor ... juniors
Tamar Ross-Williams (14.6 ppg., 5.9
rpg.) and Melvin Myers (13.0 ppg.) make
up the backcourt. Ross-Williams is anoth
er newcomer, hailing from Fullerton (CA)
College. He has 45 assists and a teamhigh 39 steals, while shooting 80.3 percent
(57 of 71) from the line. Ross-Williams
dropped in 21 markers in Wednesday’s
win over Clarion. Myers leads the Vulcans
with 59 assists, and is also the top threepoint threat with 38 in 87 tries ... the lead
ing bench performer is sophomore guard
Cedric Simpson, who contributes 5.9
ppg. with 44 assists. He is also near-per
fect at the line (28 of 30)... freshman Matt
Molinaro is another dependable reserve.
Of his 31 baskets, 25 have come from
beyond the three-point arc.

wins in their last six games, interrupted
only by a loss at lUP.
Included in that
stretch is an 81-69 triumph over the Scots
on January 9. Cal turned in a strong outing
on Wednesday, knocking Clarion out of a
three-way tie for first with a 78-66 decision.
;Now Edinboro would like to do the same to
the Vulcans, after having their own threegame winning streak snapped. The Scots
will have to contend with a Vulcan squad
that features all five starters scoring in dou
ble digits. But Cal faces an Edinboro club
that thrives on the McComb Fieldhouse
environment, with a 9-2 record at home
and those three upset victories.

THE LAST TIME OITT
Edinboro let a three-point lead with just
under two minutes get away in dropping a
92-86 decision at Slippery Rock. The Rock
jumped out to a 12-0 advantage to start the
contest, but the Boro guard tandem of
Adam Kaufman and Jean Paul combined
for 52 points to fuel the comeback.
Kaufman turned in one of the best efforts of
his young career, with a career-best 28
points, along with 12 assists. Paul also
posted a career-high with 24 markers. Rob
Schodt continued his strong play with 16
points. The Boro committed a mere eight
turnovers, but was done in by a Slippery
Rock team which enjoyed a rare hot shoot
ing night. The Rock entered the contest
ranked last in the PSAC in scoring offense
and field goal percentage, but tallied 92
points and“Shot 50.0 percent for the game.

beat th^ Boro - California(Pa.) in the final
home g^ iS of 1996-97 ... the Boro backcourt ha:: juietly become one of the most
effective »* the PSAC. That’s no surprise
with Adar» Kaufman, since the 5’11” point
^uard was a second team All-PSAC West
selection as a freshman. While still dis
playing outstanding playmaking skills,
Kaufman has greatly improved his scoring,
now averaging 11.3 ppg. following eight
straight double-figure efforts. During that
stretch he is averaging 15.6 ppg. Kaufman
comes off a career-high 28-point effort
against Slippery Rock, adding 12 assists.
He leads the team in assists (143) and
steals (35), while canning 26 of 73 threepointers and shooting 78.5 percent from
the line (51 of 65). Kaufman already ranks
third in career assists with 416, and is sixth
in Division II this season ... while
Kaufman’s play is expected, Jean Paul has
been a very pleasant surprise
The 6’3"
senior played football and later oasketball
at Indiana University before joining the
Scots this year. He is averaging 13.1 ppg.
and is second on the team with 55 assists.
Paul is also the Scots’ top three-point
shooter, making 30 in 69 tries.
Like
Kaufman, he comes off a career-best on
Wednesday, finishing with 24 markers.
Paul has scored in double figures in nine of
the last ten games, and now has back-toback twenty-point efforts ... another sur-'
prise for the Scots has been the play of
Rob Schodt. The 6’8” sophomore scored
a career-high 20 points in a 71-69 upset

EDINBORO

Edinboro has reached that juncture in
the season in which the Scots can ill afford
a loss if they are to secure one of four
PSAC West playoff spots.
The Boro
slipped to 10-9 overall and 3-3 in league
play after Wednesday’s loss at Slippery
Rock. The Scots are a different team at
McComb Fieldhouse, however, where they
are 9-2 and undefeated in league action. In
fact, the Scots have won their last twelve
contests against PSAC West foes at
McComb Fieldhouse. The last team to
