After their commanding 81-58 victoiy over Clarion on Wednesday, head coach Tom Kendall’s squad has now won as many games as they did in the entire 1997-98 season, when they went 11-15. The Vulcans, first in the conference in team rebounding margin (+9.2 rpg), wrapped up the first half of PSAC action with a 4-2 ledger, dropping contests to Shippensburg (82-65) and Indiana (74-59). Last Wednesday, they defeated Clarion, 81-59, benefitting from a 26-point and 14-rebound performance by sophomore center Shujuane Brown. The Cal offense is led by a trio of scorers averaging in double figures, including senior forward Heather Corby, who also leads the PSAC in rebounding (13.3 rpg) and in blocks (67, 3.53 bpg). The conference’s secondbest scorer at 18.8 points per contest, she had 16 points and 17 rebounds in the win over Clarion. Earlier this season against Edinboro, Corby led all scorers with 30 points, 13 rebounds, and five blocks... senior guard Shalonda Byas contributed 11 points versus Clarion. She averages 14.7 points per game, and put up 15 points against the Scots the first time around... Shujuane Brown was the high-scorer for the Vulcans against Clarion with 26 points. A strong presence on the blocks. Brown averages 10.1 points and 8.1 rebounds each time out... a pair of fresh man guards, Cindy Dove and Rachel Hall, solidify the Cal backcourt. Dove adds 7.2 points per game and currently posts a teamhigh 73 assists... Hall scored 12 points against the Fighting Scots in the first half of the conference season. She averages 4.6 points and 2.5 rebounds per game... sopho more guard Liz Monroe has started in 11 of 19 games this season, and averages just over seven points per game. Monroe leads the Vulcans in long-distance shooting, with 28 made three-pointers this season... forward Vaniah Palmer averages 4.3 points per game, and has appeared in all 19 contests... freshman forward Mollie Manley recorded a big game against Edinboro earlier this sea son, shooting 5 of 6 from the floor for 10 points. She averages 4.1 points per game. BimOROWOlmrSBASmBmEAMENOm-nBCaBfornlamBamB Marin Hightower to illness. Despite the efforts of Jessica Rowe and Meghan Miller, who recorded 28 and 20 points, respective ly, Edinboro could not stop the Vulcans’ attack. EDDmORO BASKETBAU AT A GLANCE The Fighting Scots, 14-6 overall, are 91 while at home, but have struggled outside of McComb Fieldhouse, posting a 3-4 away-game record. In updated PSAC statistics, Edinbcro leads the conference in three-point fsesd goal percentage, shooting 36.4-percent. The Scots are also third in scoring offense (76.8 points per game). THE LAST TIME OUT Last Wednesday, the Fighting Scots were unable to shake their on-the-road woes, as they fell by the 87-74 margin to Slippery Rock University. The Rock shot 51.7-percent from the floor with three play ers scoring in double-figures, including Heather Kearney, who recorded her 13th double-double of the season. The Scots, held to just 38-percent shooting, fought back after being down as much as 24 points in the second half, but were unable to make up the total difference. The Fightini: Scots SCOUTINS THE SCOTS Junior forward Marin Hightower reas sumed her spot underneath the basket two games ago after being sidelined due to ill ness for close to a whole month. In those two games, Hightower picked up where she had left off, leading the way for the Scots with 17 and 20 points, respectively. She now averages 19.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per game... Jessica Rowe has proven without a doubt that she is not afraid to shoot the ball, putting up 25 field goals attempts (for a total 17 points) versus Slippery Rock. One of the best on the squad at creating plays, Rowe leads the team with 66 assists in addition to scoring an average 14.9 points per game. With the growing cost of education, the importance of private funding for our ath letic program is vital to the continued success we have all enjoyed here at Edinboro University. With no state appropriation for athletic scholarships, we depend on labor-intensive, fundraising events, as well as the generous support of our alumni and friends, to supplement our scholarship-fund. The efforts of our University employees during our summer camp season continue to be the major sot *s of our financial development. Although the Ur f'sity has enjoyed athletic success in the 1990s, our sports teams continue to be funded well below the National Collegiate Athlefic Association (NCAA) allowable limit. Overall, it is the goal of Edinboro University to give the bfest quality educa tion and athletic experience possible to our studentathletes. We not only want our students to have the opportunity to compete, but to be the very best they can be. At Edinboro University, we will do everything pos sible to generate the resources necessary to stay competitive, but we need your ongoing support to continue to improve upon our rich athletic tradition. We are excited about hearing from you soon, as you join us on our mission to provide a quality ath letic program for the entire Edinboro family. Sincerely, _ Bruce R. The Fighting Scots have already knocked off nationally-ranked foes St. Rose, Central State and lndiana(Pa.). The lUP contest occurred ten days ago, and left the Scots with plenty of life in the PSAC race. But Wednesday’s 92-86 loss at Slippery Rock cast a shadow of doubt as the Boro begins second half action. Coach Greg Walcavich’s team is now 10-9 overall and 3-3 in league play, tied with Slippery Rock while trailing lUP and California(Pa.), the frontrunners at 5-1 each, and 4-2 Clarion. He is also near-per fect at the line (28 of 30)... freshman Matt Molinaro is another dependable reserve. Of his 31 baskets, 25 have come from beyond the three-point arc. EDlNBOROimSBASKEnALLBAMENOnS-ThBCaBfoniiatPaJBmB. wins in their last six games, interrupted only by a loss at lUP. Included in that stretch is an 81-69 triumph over the Scots on January 9. Cal turned in a strong outing on Wednesday, knocking Clarion out of a three-way tie for first with a 78-66 decision. ;Now Edinboro would like to do the same to the Vulcans, after having their own threegame winning streak snapped. The Scots will have to contend with a Vulcan squad that features all five starters scoring in dou ble digits. But Cal faces an Edinboro club that thrives on the McComb Fieldhouse environment, with a 9-2 record at home and those three upset victories. THE LAST TIME OITT Edinboro let a three-point lead with just under two minutes get away in dropping a 92-86 decision at Slippery Rock. The Rock jumped out to a 12-0 advantage to start the contest, but the Boro guard tandem of Adam Kaufman and Jean Paul combined for 52 points to fuel the comeback. Kaufman turned in one of the best efforts of his young career, with a career-best 28 points, along with 12 assists. Paul also posted a career-high with 24 markers. Rob Schodt continued his strong play with 16 points. The Boro committed a mere eight turnovers, but was done in by a Slippery Rock team which enjoyed a rare hot shoot ing night.
