eighth year after posting an impressive42-20-5 slate in his
past seven campaigns. "We have a lot of work to do
because we have an unproven passing attack. It would be
just too tough to match Jude Basile's performances, and,
consequently, we'll have to make up for it on the ground.
The problem here, of course, is that our fullback. Rich
Holmes, is gone and he'll certainly be hard to replace."
Yet opponents are quick to cast second glances with
the return of All-American Honorable Mention tailback
Dave Green, a 5-10, 200-lb. junior, who lugged the pigskin
for 1,239 yards and was the team's leading scorer with 62
points.
"There is no doubt that Dave is one of the top running
backs around," projected the Scot coach, "while we have
some real capable people in Jeff Delbene (5-10, 197, So.)
and Bryan Libert (6-2, 195, Jr.), who'll battle for the other
spot."
As a freshman sensation, Delbene averaged eight
yards per carry in his 29 tries with the football last fall.
Complementing the Scots' ground game is recordbreaking pass catcher Howard Hackley(5-9,172,.Sr.) who
has revised three Edinboro receiving marks. Still on hand to
grab ESC aerials are alternating tight ends Steve Larson (63, 220, Sr.) and Mark Mellone (6-4, 200, Jr.), with speedy
Curtis Pettis (5-9, 160, So.) behind Hackley at the wide
receiver slot.
While most people around the country are whooping it
up for either the donkey or the elephant this fall. Fighting
Scot fans are more concerned as to whether or not it will be
the year of the "Boro.” Thirty lettermen return from a club
that went 8-3 a year ago, captured the Pennsylvania Con
ference Western Division title and fell just five points short
of claiming the Pennsylvania Conference crown.
"We don't know the character of our offense yet,"
commented Scot Coach Bill McDonald, who enters his

Paving the way up front are veteran linemen Doug
Goodman (C, 6-2, 225, Sr.), Lou Provenzano (G, 6-1,230,
Sr.) and Greg Hampy (T, 6-2, 235, Jr.).
"Our offensive line appears to be one of our major
trouble spots," reflected McDonald, "because we have
only three veterans returning here. Goodman and
Provenzano should both have great years and be the
leaders up front."
Also returning to open holes for Scot running backs are
tackle Lee Barthelmes (6-5, 235, Jr.) and guard Dave
Gallagher (5-10, 195, So.). Standing by are promising
guards Bob Kunkle, a 6-0, 219-lb. sophomore, and Tim
Lynch, a 6-1, 220-lb. junior.
McDonald beamed optimistically for the first time
when he predicted, "If no one gets hurt, we should be
extremely sound on defense. A major key here is the
number of capable replacements we find, particularly
along the defensive line."
McDonald's optimism is well-founded with the return
of three All-American Honorable Mention winners in the
likes of 6-4, 250-lb. junior middle guard Ron Gooden, along
with senior defensive backs George Miller and Jim Terry.

The biggest problem facing the Scots defensively has
been the end slots where changes and heavy recruiting
have produced some interesting results. Scheduled at one
of the terminals is experienced lineman Bryan Smith, a 6-3,
230-lb. sophomore, while converted linebacker Kevin
Erickson, a 6-1,215-lb. senior, has the number-one spot on
the other side. The only other available vet who has logged
playing time is Tom Lang, a 6-0, 200-lb. junior.
"Dan has been waiting in the wings for three years and
has been extremely patient," stated McDonald. "He's just
got to step in and do it for us. Mike Hill played a lotof jayvee
ball for us last year and has a lot to offer."

first reliever for the linebacking duo is junior Andy Mangola
(5-11, 198) who lettered at a middle guard.
Experience abounds in the Scots' star-studded
secondary where Kevin Campbell (5-11, 185, Jr.), Brad
Crawshaw (6-0, 185, Sr.) and Mike Jennings (5-1 "1, 175,
Jr.) join All-American defensive backs Miller and Terry.

Winning Ways — A McDonald Trademark
New Faces Direct the Fighting Scot Forces
While he directed Indiana University's offense, the Big
Indians registered 24 regular season victories against only
three defeats. In his final season at Indiana, the Tribe
finished unbeaten in nine outings and proved to be the
greatest offensive unit in the school's history with a 40
points-per-game average.
The Wall, Pa., native guided Hopewell High School to a
46-25-1 slate during his seven-year tenure as head coach.
His 1960 ball club defeated Braddock High 7-6 and broke
their WPIAL 58-game winning streak while his 1963 team
captured the Midwest Class A Championship.
The Fighting Scots' grid pilot served as an assistant
coach at Braddock High School through two undefeated
seasons and also at Latrobe High.
McDonald holds both a B.S. degree in education and a
M.Ed. from the Univ. of Cincinnati where he played
linebacker under Sid Gillman and his assistant coach Paul
Dietzel. This team was the original "Chinese Bandits," a
defensive unit which later became famous at Louisiana
State University.
After graduation from Cincinnati in 1952, the Scots'
mentor continued his education in post graduate work at
Penn State, Pitt and Indiana (Pa.) Universities. Bill and his
wife, Joanne, along with their three children - Amy, Jody
and Dave - reside in Edinboro.
Head Coach - Bill McDonald
Bill McDonald carries an impressive 42-20-5 record
into the 1976 season after seven years of leading the
Fighting Scots' gridiron program. Under his direction, ESC
gridders posted identical 9-1 slates in both 1970 and 1971
while piling up a winning streak of 21 straight regular
season games. His 42-20-5 mark puts him at the top of the
winning percentage list among Edinboro State football
coaches with a 73 per cent reading.
Front row: Harry Morrison, Denny Creehan, Barney Rutkowski and Jim
Bowen.
JIM BOWEN — Linebackers
BARNEY RUTKOWSKI — Offensive Backs
Jim Bowen begins his 10th year with the Edinboro
State football program by switching his talents to the
defensive side of the ledger. The veteran mentor has
primarily worked with the Scots' offensive attack, but this
year the experienced coach will help fill a gap by directing
the linebackers. Bowen served as backfield coach tutoring
such greats as Joe Sanford, Jim Romaniszyn, Bob
Mengerink and Al Raines. Jim was head football coach at
Fairview High School for 10 years and compiled an
outstanding record of 76 wins and 12 losses. His grid teams
captured four league championships while riding 25 and
19 game winning streaks. The knowledgeable Scot coach
graduated from Slippery Rock State in 1957 and earned his
master's degree from Buffalo University. Jim and his wife,
Joyce, along with their 7 children, two of which are twin
girls, reside in Girard.
After an initial 4-4-1 season in 1969, his Fighting
Scots became the greatest in ESC history when they went
8-0 in regular season play, captured the Lambert Bowl,
won the Pennsylvania Conference championship and
earned a berth in the NAIA national playoffs. His 1971 team
followed up with an undefeated regular season (9-0) and a
second straight PC Western Division title. Over 60
individual and team records have been established during
his first seven years at the reigns.
TOM HERMAN — Offensive Coordinator
Upon completion of 1970's successful venture,
numerous post-season laurels were bestowed upon the
Scot's mentor. The Football Writers Association of New
York named McDonald Coach of the Year in the East while
the NAIA Area VIII and District 18 coaches as well as the
Pennsylvania Collegiate Press Association also rewarded
him with Coach of the Year honors.
Prior to his assignment at Edinboro, McDonald served
as assistant football coach at Indiana Univ. of Pa. for three
years and head coach at Hopewell High School from 19581965.
1976 ESC FOOTBALL STAFF —Back row, L—R: Head Coach Bill McDonald,
Tom Herman, Jim Paul, J. P. Chakot and Ken Walker.
1976 SCOT TRI-CAPTAINS: (L-R) JIM TERRY, HOWARD HACKLEY
AND DOUG GOODMAN.
Tom Herman returns to his alma mater for the second
year to coordinate the offensive unit and primarily to tutor
the offensive line. Originally a standout football player at
Lincoln High School in Ellwood City, Tom continued his grid
career at Edinboro State for four years where he started as
a centerduring his junior campaign and then wasa regular
defensive end in his senior season. Tom earned his
master's degree in health and physical education at
Marshall University where he served as an assistant
offensive line coach. He spent last fall sharpening
Edinboro State's defensive linemen.
Barney Rutkowski begins his second year on the
Fighting Scot staff coaching offensive backs and
coordinating the junior varsity offense. Barney came to
Edinboro last year after spending six seasons as head
football coach at St. John Kanty Prep and had also served
one year as assistant coach at Wesleyville High School. He
is a graduate of Wesleyville High where he earned all
county honors performing at both quarterback and
linebacker. Following two years of active service in the
Navy, Barney attended Findlay College, Findlay, Ohio,
where he was a member of both the football and wrestling
squads. He then moved to Kanty Prep in a teaching position
for nine years, six of which involved head coach in football
and nine consecutive season as head basketball coach.
Presently, he is working toward his certification in health
and physical education at Edinboro. Barney and his wife,
Carol, reside in Erie along with their four children, Russell
15, Raymond 14, Beth Ann 12, and Mary Carol 10.
KEN WALKER — Defensive Ends
Ken Walker comes to the Fighting Scot camp to mold
the Scots' defensive ends after serving as head football
coach at Union City Area High School for the past four
seasons. During that span, the Bears captured two league
championships and were most impressive last fall when
they lost their first ball game and won their next eight in a
row. Ken was a four-sport lettermen at Edinboro's General
McLane High School and then chose to continue his career
at Edinboro State where he played split end and defensive

back for the Fighting Scots. Upon receiving his degree in
elementary education in 1970, he accepted an assistant
football coaching position at Cambridge Springs High and
then moved to a similar position at Union City in 1971 prior
to his head coaching assignment. The new Scot mentor
lives in Edinboro with his wife, Jan, and their four-year old
son. Matt.
DENNY CREEHAN — Def. Coordinator
Denny Creehan, a captain on Edinboro State's 1970
Lambert Bowl championship team, has joined the Scot
staff as a defensive coordinator. Denny was accorded first
team all-east honors by the ECAC and first team all-state
Associated Press while performing as the Scots' strong
safety. A graduate of Bethel Park High School in Pittsburgh,
Denny has also earned an M.S. degree from Duquesne
University and his M. Ed. from Pitt, in addition to his B.S.
degree at Edinboro State. The Castle Shannon, Pa., native
served as defensive coordinator at Keystone Oaks High in
Pittsburgh for three years before joining the Pitt staff in
1974. After a year with the Panthers under Coach Johnny
Majors, Denny served as offensive coordinator at Carnegie
Mellon University for a single season. Denny recently
moved to Edinboro, bringing with him his wife, Linda, and
their one-year old son, Kevin.
HARRY MORRISON — Offensive Line
A 1968 Indiana University of Pennsylvania graduate
with a degree in business, Harry Morrison will be offering
his coaching points to the offensive line prospects.
Morrison is originally from Greenville, Pa., where he played
football and wrestled at Greenville High School. In 1969 he
accepted a coaching position at Warren Western Reserve,
one of Ohio's most highly respected scholastic football
powers. Harry had charge of both the offensive and
defensive backs for the Fighting Raiders, who posted 9-1
and 8-2 season slates before going unbeaten, 12-0, in
1972. Prior to this year's membership on the Edinboro
State College football staff, Harry directed both the
offensive and defensive line candidates at McDowell High
School under Coach Jim Paul. Heand his wife, Kathy, along
with theirfourchildren, Don9, Wendy7, Ray6,and Holly5,
reside in Erie.

JOHN PAUL CHAKOT — Defensive Line
John Paul Chakot is another of our four past ESC
standouts who returns to the "Home of the Fighting Scots"
via a graduate assistantship on the Edinboro coaching
staff. Chakot, who starred at Edinboro as an offensive
tackle until graduation in 1973, will direct the defensive
line charges. J. P. earned first team All-Pennsylvania
Conference and Associated Press honors in his senior year,
as well as a first team berth on the NAIA All-District squad.
He also served as one of the Scots' grid captains for the
1972 team. The Blairsville High product was line coach at
Peters Township High for two years and worked in the
same capacity at Southmoreland Senior High for a pair of
seasons, 1974 through 1975.
JIM PAUL— Receivers
Newcomer Jim Paul brings a vast amount of
knowledge to the Scots' receiving corps after his valuable
experiences in both the collegiate and pro ranks. Paul, a
native of Lancaster, Pa., where he graduated from
Lancaster Catholic High, earned All-American honors as a
receiver at Garden City College in Kansas. He then enrolled
at Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado, and
garnered similar All-American honors while the Indians
were listed 7th and 11th in the country. After graduation in
1969, Paul was drafted in the 15th round by the Denver
Broncos where he played tight end and wide receiver for a
year before moving to the Atlanta Falcons in 1970. He
decided to return to Pennsylvania in 1971 as an offensive
coach for Central Cambria High and a year later was first
assistant coach at Johnstown High School. In 1973, Jim
was named head football coach at Erie's McDowell High
School where he served in that capacity until this past year
before joining the Scot staff. Jim, his wife. Sue, and their
children, Lisa 8 and Amy 6, live in Erie.

Bob Klingler
Al Hall
AL HALL — Athletic Director
Since Al Hall's appointment as Athletic Director in
1968, Edinboro State has enjoyed one of the most

in the East. Through his efforts, Edinboro State College has
become a focal point for athffetics in Northwestern
Pennsylvania and has hosted numerous championship
events. Under his leadership, ESC's sports program has
vastly expanded and attained new memberships in the
ECAC and NCAA while building a coaching staff that has
compiled the College's best record in history. A graduate of
Baldwin-Wallace College, he served as Assistant Director
of Athletics at Akron University for two years and piloted
Akron's cross country teams to championship finishes for
12 seasons. Al, his wife, Pam, daughter, Beth, and their

normal school and did not play a complete inter

HOME OF THE FIGHTING SCOTS — SOX HARRISON STADIUM
Serving as home for ESC athletes and fans is Sox
Harrison Stadium. The edifice was dedicated in the fall of
1965 in honor of "Sox” Harrison who served as head
football and basketball coach at the College for 35 years.
His 1931 -32 cage record of 11 wins and 1 loss still stands
as one of the best marks ever posted by an Edinboro
basketball team. Sox still enjoys watching the Fighting
Scots on Saturday afternoons as one of their most ardent
fans.
Complete facilities are located beneath the grandstand
area, which seats 3,000 people. Locker space for both the
home and visiting teams, the coaching staff offices and
locker room, the officials' dressing room, the training room.

facilities, equipment rooms, a large concession stand and
a glass enclosed press box.
In addition to the football field, the stadium also
contains complete track facilities. A quarter-mile oval, a
220 straight-away and asphalt approaches for the field
events highlight the home of the cinder sport.
Bleacher seats on the visitors side of the stadium bring
the total seating capacity to 5,500.
A new scoreboard, one of the largest in the
Conference, was added at the south end of the field last
year.

eighth year after posting an impressive42-20-5 slate in his
past seven campaigns.

McDonald's optimism is well-founded with the return
of three All-American Honorable Mention winners in the
likes of 6-4, 250-lb. junior middle guard Ron Gooden, along
with senior defensive backs George Miller and Jim Terry.

because he is a great stalk blocker. Of course, we expect
another great year from Hackley."
"These three are all solid veterans," related the head
mentor, "but other than that, we're desperately looking for
help." McDonald could find back-up strength from 6-6,
240-lb. tackle Bill Buesink and 5-10, 205-lb. sophomore

Ready to step in to the vacated quarterback slot is 6-3,

every game last season.

Both of last year's starting linebackers are on hand to
haunt opposing running backs. Back in the fold are Greg
Sullivan, a 6-1, 195-lb. junior, who shared a team-leading
139 stops, and last fall's third-leading tackier, 6-1,225-lb.
sophomore, Jim Krentz, who plays all over the field. The
first reliever for the linebacking duo is junior Andy Mangola
(5-11, 198) who lettered at a middle guard.
Experience abounds in the Scots' star-studded
secondary where Kevin Campbell (5-11, 185, Jr.), Brad
Crawshaw (6-0, 185, Sr.) and Mike Jennings (5-1 "1, 175,
Jr.) join All-American defensive backs Miller and Terry.
Adding depth here is quick-learning sophomore Bruno
Capogreco (6-3, 195).
Probably the most interesting statistic on the 1976
Edinboro State edition is that it rates as the tallest and
largest in the Scots' history. As a team, the ESC gridders
average 6'1V2" tall and 200 pounds per man.

Ken Walker comes to the Fighting Scot camp to mold
the Scots' defensive ends after serving as head football
coach at Union City Area High School for the past four
seasons. During that span, the Bears captured two league
championships and were most impressive last fall when
they lost their first ball game and won their next eight in a

elementary education in 1970, he accepted an assistant
football coaching position at Cambridge Springs High and
then moved to a similar position at Union City in 1971 prior
to his head coaching assignment. The new Scot mentor

son.

A 1968 Indiana University of Pennsylvania graduate
with a degree in business, Harry Morrison will be offering
his coaching points to the offensive line prospects.

football and wrestled at Greenville High School. In 1969 he
accepted a coaching position at Warren Western Reserve,
one of Ohio's most highly respected scholastic football
powers. Harry had charge of both the offensive and
defensive backs for the Fighting Raiders, who posted 9-1
and 8-2 season slates before going unbeaten, 12-0, in

JOHN PAUL CHAKOT — Defensive Line
John Paul Chakot is another of our four past ESC
standouts who returns to the "Home of the Fighting Scots"
via a graduate assistantship on the Edinboro coaching
staff. Chakot, who starred at Edinboro as an offensive

line charges. J. P. earned first team All-Pennsylvania

as well as a first team berth on the NAIA All-District squad.

Al Hall
AL HALL — Athletic Director
Since Al Hall's appointment as Athletic Director in
1968, Edinboro State has enjoyed one of the most
respected and most successful collegiate athletic programs
in the East. Through his efforts, Edinboro State College has
become a focal point for athffetics in Northwestern
Pennsylvania and has hosted numerous championship
events. Under his leadership, ESC's sports program has
vastly expanded and attained new memberships in the
ECAC and NCAA while building a coaching staff that has
compiled the College's best record in history. A graduate of
Baldwin-Wallace College, he served as Assistant Director
of Athletics at Akron University for two years and piloted
Akron's cross country teams to championship finishes for
12 seasons. Al, his wife, Pam, daughter, Beth, and their
son. Dale, reside in Edinboro.
BOB KLINGLER — Team Trainer
Giving Fighting Scot athletes the tops in professional
medical care and producing top-notch staffs of student
trainers hasbeen the trademark of trainer Bob Klingler who
begins his tenth season at Edinboro State. The 1952 Lock
Haven grad ventured to Hermann School of Physical
Therapy in Houston, Texas and became a registered
physical therapist in 1954. He later received his M.S. from
Bucknell. Prior to accepting his ESC post, Klingler taught at
Milton Hershey, a private boys' school in Hershey, Pa. Bob,
his wife, Jill, and daughter, Julie, make their home in
Washington Township.
The nationally renown Marching Scots Band under the
direction of John Little and Ronald Byerly will continue to
offer spectacular performances which serve as top-notch
entertainment throughout the season.
Featured in the Marching Scots Band is a contingent of
151 strong which includes 128 instrumentalists, 16 tarn o'
shanters, 6 majorettes and one feature twirler. For the
fourth straight year, the Band of Scots will be performing at
Three Rivers Stadium where this year they provide the pre
game and half-time shows for the Pittsburgh Steelers/
Cleveland Browns game on September 19. The Edinboro
State band was featured on national television last year
when it provided entertainment for the Steelers/Kansas
City Chiefs game. This year, the Scots band will present
"The Election of 1976" as their show at Three Rivers.
In addition to their appearance at the Steeler game, the
Marching Scots Band will perform at all of Edinboro's home
and two away football games. Productions for the 1976
season in addition to "The Election of 1976" are "The Big
Band Sounds of 1976," "The Alumni of 1976," "The
Television Scene of 1976," and "The Music of 1976."
Freshman Leigh Ann Potter from Monongahela, Pa.,
serves as the featured twirler for the Scot majorettes who
are directed by Jeanne Schultz from Pittsburgh.
Drum major for the Marching Scots Band is Steve
Barber, a senior from Johnstown, Pa.
The Marching Scots will once again hold their annual
Band Day Contest on the Edinboro State College campus,
September 25, when eight visiting high schools will vie for
top musical honors.

Locker space for both the
home and visiting teams, the coaching staff offices and
locker room, the officials' dressing room, the training room.

showers, the weight room and a laundry room are utilized
within this space. Also included are restrooms, janitors'
facilities, equipment rooms, a large concession stand and
a glass enclosed press box.
A new scoreboard, one of the largest in the
Conference, was added at the south end of the field last
year.
