"We have a lot of work to do because we have an unproven passing attack. It would be just too tough to match Jude Basile's performances, and, consequently, we'll have to make up for it on the ground. The problem here, of course, is that our fullback. Rich Holmes, is gone and he'll certainly be hard to replace." Yet opponents are quick to cast second glances with the return of All-American Honorable Mention tailback Dave Green, a 5-10, 200-lb. junior, who lugged the pigskin for 1,239 yards and was the team's leading scorer with 62 points. "There is no doubt that Dave is one of the top running backs around," projected the Scot coach, "while we have some real capable people in Jeff Delbene (5-10, 197, So.) and Bryan Libert (6-2, 195, Jr.), who'll battle for the other spot." As a freshman sensation, Delbene averaged eight yards per carry in his 29 tries with the football last fall. Complementing the Scots' ground game is recordbreaking pass catcher Howard Hackley(5-9,172,.Sr.) who has revised three Edinboro receiving marks. Still on hand to grab ESC aerials are alternating tight ends Steve Larson (63, 220, Sr.) and Mark Mellone (6-4, 200, Jr.), with speedy Curtis Pettis (5-9, 160, So.) behind Hackley at the wide receiver slot. While most people around the country are whooping it up for either the donkey or the elephant this fall. Fighting Scot fans are more concerned as to whether or not it will be the year of the "Boro.” Thirty lettermen return from a club that went 8-3 a year ago, captured the Pennsylvania Con ference Western Division title and fell just five points short of claiming the Pennsylvania Conference crown. "We don't know the character of our offense yet," commented Scot Coach Bill McDonald, who enters his Name: Edinboro State College Location: Edinboro, Pennsylvania 16444 Enrollment 6,700 Nickname: Fighting Scots Colors: Red and White Conference: Pennsylvania Conference National Affiliations: NAIA, NCAA, ECAC Field Name (Cap.): Sox Harrison (5,000) Athletic Director: Al Hall Sports Information Director: Paul Newman Sports Information Phone: 814-732-2745 1975 Record: 8-3 Conference Place, Record: 1 st, 6-0 Paving the way up front are veteran linemen Doug Goodman (C, 6-2, 225, Sr.), Lou Provenzano (G, 6-1,230, Sr.) and Greg Hampy (T, 6-2, 235, Jr.). "Our offensive line appears to be one of our major trouble spots," reflected McDonald, "because we have only three veterans returning here. Goodman and Provenzano should both have great years and be the leaders up front." Also returning to open holes for Scot running backs are tackle Lee Barthelmes (6-5, 235, Jr.) and guard Dave Gallagher (5-10, 195, So.). Standing by are promising guards Bob Kunkle, a 6-0, 219-lb. sophomore, and Tim Lynch, a 6-1, 220-lb. junior. McDonald beamed optimistically for the first time when he predicted, "If no one gets hurt, we should be extremely sound on defense. A major key here is the number of capable replacements we find, particularly along the defensive line." McDonald's optimism is well-founded with the return of three All-American Honorable Mention winners in the likes of 6-4, 250-lb. junior middle guard Ron Gooden, along with senior defensive backs George Miller and Jim Terry. 1976 FIGHTING SCOTS RETURNING LETTERMEN - 30 Offensive Starters - 6 WR ... .***Howard Hackley (5-9, 170, Sr.) LT....... **Greg Hampy (6-2, 235, Jr.) LG ..... **Lou Provenzano (6-1, 225, Sr.) C......... ***Doug Goodman (6-1, 205, Sr.) TE....... ***Steve Larson (6-3, 210, Sr.) *Mark Mellone (6-4, 200, Jr.) TB....... *Dave Green (5-11, 210, Jr.) Defensive Starters - 7 LT....... *Rick McMahon (6-2, 220, Sr.) Joining Gooden in the trenches are senior tackles Jeff Shaw (6-3, 230) and Rick McMahon (6-2, 225). Scheduled at one of the terminals is experienced lineman Bryan Smith, a 6-3, 230-lb. sophomore, while converted linebacker Kevin Erickson, a 6-1,215-lb. senior, has the number-one spot on the other side. Winning Ways — A McDonald Trademark New Faces Direct the Fighting Scot Forces While he directed Indiana University's offense, the Big Indians registered 24 regular season victories against only three defeats. In his final season at Indiana, the Tribe finished unbeaten in nine outings and proved to be the greatest offensive unit in the school's history with a 40 points-per-game average. The Wall, Pa., native guided Hopewell High School to a 46-25-1 slate during his seven-year tenure as head coach. His 1960 ball club defeated Braddock High 7-6 and broke their WPIAL 58-game winning streak while his 1963 team captured the Midwest Class A Championship. The Fighting Scots' grid pilot served as an assistant coach at Braddock High School through two undefeated seasons and also at Latrobe High. McDonald holds both a B.S. degree in education and a M.Ed. from the Univ. of Cincinnati where he played linebacker under Sid Gillman and his assistant coach Paul Dietzel. This team was the original "Chinese Bandits," a defensive unit which later became famous at Louisiana State University. After graduation from Cincinnati in 1952, the Scots' mentor continued his education in post graduate work at Penn State, Pitt and Indiana (Pa.) Universities. Bill and his wife, Joanne, along with their three children - Amy, Jody and Dave - reside in Edinboro. Head Coach - Bill McDonald Bill McDonald carries an impressive 42-20-5 record into the 1976 season after seven years of leading the Fighting Scots' gridiron program. Under his direction, ESC gridders posted identical 9-1 slates in both 1970 and 1971 while piling up a winning streak of 21 straight regular season games. His 42-20-5 mark puts him at the top of the winning percentage list among Edinboro State football coaches with a 73 per cent reading. Front row: Harry Morrison, Denny Creehan, Barney Rutkowski and Jim Bowen. JIM BOWEN — Linebackers BARNEY RUTKOWSKI — Offensive Backs Jim Bowen begins his 10th year with the Edinboro State football program by switching his talents to the defensive side of the ledger. The veteran mentor has primarily worked with the Scots' offensive attack, but this year the experienced coach will help fill a gap by directing the linebackers. Bowen served as backfield coach tutoring such greats as Joe Sanford, Jim Romaniszyn, Bob Mengerink and Al Raines. Jim was head football coach at Fairview High School for 10 years and compiled an outstanding record of 76 wins and 12 losses. His grid teams captured four league championships while riding 25 and 19 game winning streaks. The knowledgeable Scot coach graduated from Slippery Rock State in 1957 and earned his master's degree from Buffalo University. Jim and his wife, Joyce, along with their 7 children, two of which are twin girls, reside in Girard. After an initial 4-4-1 season in 1969, his Fighting Scots became the greatest in ESC history when they went 8-0 in regular season play, captured the Lambert Bowl, won the Pennsylvania Conference championship and earned a berth in the NAIA national playoffs. His 1971 team followed up with an undefeated regular season (9-0) and a second straight PC Western Division title. Over 60 individual and team records have been established during his first seven years at the reigns. TOM HERMAN — Offensive Coordinator Upon completion of 1970's successful venture, numerous post-season laurels were bestowed upon the Scot's mentor. The Football Writers Association of New York named McDonald Coach of the Year in the East while the NAIA Area VIII and District 18 coaches as well as the Pennsylvania Collegiate Press Association also rewarded him with Coach of the Year honors. Prior to his assignment at Edinboro, McDonald served as assistant football coach at Indiana Univ. of Pa. for three years and head coach at Hopewell High School from 19581965. 1976 ESC FOOTBALL STAFF —Back row, L—R: Head Coach Bill McDonald, Tom Herman, Jim Paul, J. Tom Herman returns to his alma mater for the second year to coordinate the offensive unit and primarily to tutor the offensive line. Originally a standout football player at Lincoln High School in Ellwood City, Tom continued his grid career at Edinboro State for four years where he started as a centerduring his junior campaign and then wasa regular defensive end in his senior season. Tom earned his master's degree in health and physical education at Marshall University where he served as an assistant offensive line coach. He spent last fall sharpening Edinboro State's defensive linemen. Barney Rutkowski begins his second year on the Fighting Scot staff coaching offensive backs and coordinating the junior varsity offense. Barney came to Edinboro last year after spending six seasons as head football coach at St. John Kanty Prep and had also served one year as assistant coach at Wesleyville High School. He is a graduate of Wesleyville High where he earned all county honors performing at both quarterback and linebacker. Semi-Final Playoff HOME OF THE FIGHTING SCOTS — SOX HARRISON STADIUM Serving as home for ESC athletes and fans is Sox Harrison Stadium. The edifice was dedicated in the fall of 1965 in honor of "Sox” Harrison who served as head football and basketball coach at the College for 35 years.
