•
THE GAME STORY
Edinboro has now lost five of its last six
games and three in a row following
Saturday's
81-69
setback
at
California(Pa.). The loss dropped the Soro
to 6-7 on the season. Lake Superior State
is in a similar situation, having lost three
straight outings, as well. The third came
on Saturday, as the Lakers suffered a narrow 78-74 defeat at Westminster.
mlNBORO BASKBBALL AT AGLANCE
Edinboro's losing ways of late can be
directly attributed to a decrease in the
team's defensive numbers. After limiting
all but one of the first nine opponents to
less than 80 points, the Bora is giving up
83.0 ppg. over the last four outings, with
three of the last four foes topping the 80point barrier. Overall, the Scots average
73.1 ppg. while giving up 69.9 ppg.
THE LAST TIME OUT
Edinboro dropped an 81-69 decision at
California(Pa.) to fall to 0-2 in PSAC West
action. The final score does not indicate
the closeness of the contest, however. The
Fighting Scots trailed by just a point at 6564 with 5:40 to play, but managed just one
bucket and three free throws the rest of the
way. The Soro went without a basket for
over four minutes as the Vulcans pulled
away late. Terrance Smith led a quartet of
Scots in double digits wi!h 16 points, also
clutching a team-high 8 boards. Jean Paul
and Adam Kaufman added 13 points each,
with Kaufman dishing out 8 assists. Ian
Johnson totalled 10 markers. The Scots
were done in at the line, as Cal converted
16 of 28 freebies, while the Bora was 7 of
12.
SERIES RECORD
Lake Superior State leads 1-0. The two
teams met for -the first time during the
1975-76 season, with the Lakers posting a

HEAD COACH: Marty McDermott (9-30, 2nd year)
Lake Superior State would like to make
its second tour of northwest Pennsylvania
more successful than its first, when the
Lakers dropped decisions to Mercyhurst
and Gannon in December. The Lakers of
coach Marty McDermott suffered a 78-74
loss at Westminster on Saturday, dropping
their record to 4-8. It represented the third
straight loss for LSSU, members of the
Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference ... junior Dustin Jones is the
leading scorer on a young Laker roster
which features three freshmen, five sophomores and nary a senior.. Jones, a 6'3" forward, averages 15.1 ppg. after depositing
23 markers at Westminster. That included
a 4-for-8 chart on three-pointers, giving
him 26 in 67 tries from beyond the arc ...
the only other double digit operative is
Brandon Miller, a 5'11" junior. Miller averages 12.0 ppg. along with 44 assists. He
is another three·-point threat with 22 in 46
attempts, and is shooting a healthy 51.9
percent from the field ... Miller is joined in
the backcourt by another Brandon,
Woodworth, a 5'11" freshman. The firstyear performer has a team-leading 61
assists, while canning 17 of 47 triples. He
averages 9.1 ppg... sophomore Randy
Faustin (6'5", 250 lbs.) and freshman
Mike Hammill (6'7", 225 lbs.) add plenty of
size up front. Faustin comes in at 5.0 ppg.,
while Hammill is at 9.5 ppg., along with 5.0
rpg ... there's more bulk off the bench in the
form of junior Jeremy Logan (6'5", 215

(6'3", 215 lbs.). Logan averages 6.1 ppg.,
Hammerberg 5.3.

THE FIGHTING SCOTS
BEAD COACH GREG WALCAVICH
Greg Walcavich is in his tenth season as
the Fighting Scot mentor. The Rutgers
University graduate has a 173-96 !edger at
Edinboro, and is 327-158 in 16 seasons as
a head coach. That includes stops at
Birmingham Southern (1978-83) and West
Virginia Wesleyan (1987-89). All told,
Walcavich-coached teams have wpn 20-ormore games ten times, including last year's
Fighting Scot edition which finished 26-8.
The Baro went on to win the PSAC
Tournament, before losing in the semifinals
of the NCAA East Regional. That marked
Edinboro's third trip to the NCAA's in the
last five years, with the 26 wins a new
school record. In addition, Walcavich led
Birmingham Southern to two NAIA national
tournament appearances.
Walcavich
ranked among the top Division II coaches
in winning percentage (28th) and victories
(36th) entering the season. In all, five
Edinboro teams have won 20-or-more
games under Walcavich.
SCOIJJING THE SCOTS
The Soro has just two players averaging
in double figures, with sophomore Michael
Johnson leading the way at 15.1 ppg.
However, after dropping in 58 points in his
last two outings, including a career-best 34
markers at Clarion, the 6'5" forward was
held to 8 points at California(Pa.), all in the
first half. Johnson was near-perfect at
Clarion, making 13 of 16 field goals and 4
of 5 free throws. He added 4 of 6 threepointers, just three shy of his career total.
The high-flying Johnson is second in
rebounding at 6.5 per game. In addition,
Johnson is the Boro's "Sultan .of Swat",
ranking third in Division II in blocked shots
with 39. He has already climbed into ninth
place in career blocks with 76. Previously
not known for his outside touch, Johnson
has made 11 of 22 three's, and is tied for
the team lead in steals with 21 ... senior
Jean Paul, a transfer from Indiana
University, is the only other double digit
operative at 11.1 ppg. The 6'3" guard
stands second in assists (36), while making
15 of 42 three-pointers. He dropped in 13
points at Cal . .. sophomore Adam
Kaufman served notice that he was one of
the top playmaking guards in the conference a year ago when he set a Soro record
with 273 assists, tying the PSAC standard.
Kaufman is at it again, standing 12th in
Division II in assists with 91. He also is tied
for the lead in steals with 22, and has seen
his scoring average rise to 8.8 ppg. He has
made 15 triples in 43 tries ... Terrance
Smith and Troy Stout are expected to
round out the starting five. Smith is an
acrobatic 6'6" sophomore who has battled
foul problems, exiting early from six contests. The transfer from Sacramento City
College is averaging 8.5 ppg. and 4.8 rpg.
while playing just under twenty minutes a
contest. He turned in a strong effort at Cal,
leading the Scots in both scoring (16) and
rebounding (8). Stout is a 6'6" senior wbo
has started in the middle in 12 of 13 games.
He is averaging 9.5 ppg. and a team-high
7.4 rpg. while shooting 52.8 percent from
the floor, tops on the team ... Ian Johnson
notched a career-high 21 points against
Gannon to earn his first start of the season
at Clarion. The 6'7" forward comes in at
8.6 ppg. and 5.5 rpg. and is shooting 52.5
percent from the floor ... in addition to
Johnson, the Scots receive frontcourt relief
from Rob Schodt, a 6'8" sophomore from
nearby McDowell High School. Schadt is
averaging 5.2 ppg., and is the team's top
free throw shooter at 88.0 percent (22 of
25). He had a streak of 14 in a row

SCOIJJING THE SCOTS
The Soro has just two players averaging
in double figures, with sophomore Michael
Johnson leading the way at 15.1 ppg.
However, after dropping in 58 points in his
last two outings, including a career-best 34
markers at Clarion, the 6'5" forward was
held to 8 points at California(Pa.), all in the
first half. Johnson was near-perfect at
Clarion, making 13 of 16 field goals and 4
of 5 free throws. He added 4 of 6 threepointers, just three shy of his career total.
The high-flying Johnson is second in
rebounding at 6.5 per game. In addition,
Johnson is the Boro's "Sultan .of Swat",
ranking third in Division II in blocked shots
with 39. He has already climbed into ninth
place in career blocks with 76. Previously
not known for his outside touch, Johnson
has made 11 of 22 three's, and is tied for
the team lead in steals with 21 ... senior

15 of 42 three-pointers. He dropped in 13
points at Cal . .. sophomore Adam
Kaufman served notice that he was one of
the top playmaking guards in the conference a year ago when he set a Soro record
with 273 assists, tying the PSAC standard.

Division II in assists with 91. He also is tied
for the lead in steals with 22, and has seen
his scoring average rise to 8.8 ppg. He has
made 15 triples in 43 tries ... Terrance
Smith and Troy Stout are expected to
round out the starting five. Smith is an
acrobatic 6'6" sophomore who has battled
foul problems, exiting early from six contests. The transfer from Sacramento City
College is averaging 8.5 ppg. and 4.8 rpg.
while playing just under twenty minutes a
contest. He turned in a strong effort at Cal,
