N_· D ·1 E S - • ~ • The Lake Superior St Game • THE GAME STORY Edinboro has now lost five of its last six games and three in a row following Saturday's 81-69 setback at California(Pa.). The loss dropped the Soro to 6-7 on the season. Lake Superior State is in a similar situation, having lost three straight outings, as well. The third came on Saturday, as the Lakers suffered a narrow 78-74 defeat at Westminster. mlNBORO BASKBBALL AT AGLANCE Edinboro's losing ways of late can be directly attributed to a decrease in the team's defensive numbers. After limiting all but one of the first nine opponents to less than 80 points, the Bora is giving up 83.0 ppg. over the last four outings, with three of the last four foes topping the 80point barrier. Overall, the Scots average 73.1 ppg. while giving up 69.9 ppg. THE LAST TIME OUT Edinboro dropped an 81-69 decision at California(Pa.) to fall to 0-2 in PSAC West action. The final score does not indicate the closeness of the contest, however. The Fighting Scots trailed by just a point at 6564 with 5:40 to play, but managed just one bucket and three free throws the rest of the way. The Soro went without a basket for over four minutes as the Vulcans pulled away late. Terrance Smith led a quartet of Scots in double digits wi!h 16 points, also clutching a team-high 8 boards. Jean Paul and Adam Kaufman added 13 points each, with Kaufman dishing out 8 assists. Ian Johnson totalled 10 markers. The Scots were done in at the line, as Cal converted 16 of 28 freebies, while the Bora was 7 of 12. SERIES RECORD Lake Superior State leads 1-0. The Lakers of coach Marty McDermott suffered a 78-74 loss at Westminster on Saturday, dropping their record to 4-8. It represented the third straight loss for LSSU, members of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference ... junior Dustin Jones is the leading scorer on a young Laker roster which features three freshmen, five sophomores and nary a senior.. Jones, a 6'3" forward, averages 15.1 ppg. after depositing 23 markers at Westminster. That included a 4-for-8 chart on three-pointers, giving him 26 in 67 tries from beyond the arc ... the only other double digit operative is Brandon Miller, a 5'11" junior. Miller averages 12.0 ppg. along with 44 assists. He is another three·-point threat with 22 in 46 attempts, and is shooting a healthy 51.9 percent from the field ... Miller is joined in the backcourt by another Brandon, Woodworth, a 5'11" freshman. The firstyear performer has a team-leading 61 assists, while canning 17 of 47 triples. He averages 9.1 ppg... sophomore Randy Faustin (6'5", 250 lbs.) and freshman Mike Hammill (6'7", 225 lbs.) add plenty of size up front. Faustin comes in at 5.0 ppg., while Hammill is at 9.5 ppg., along with 5.0 rpg ... there's more bulk off the bench in the form of junior Jeremy Logan (6'5", 215 lbs.) and sophomore Jim Hammerberg (6'3", 215 lbs.). Logan averages 6.1 ppg., Hammerberg 5.3. EDINBOROMEKSBASKBBAll GAMENOTES-Tho Lako Superior St Gamo THE FIGHTING SCOTS BEAD COACH GREG WALCAVICH Greg Walcavich is in his tenth season as the Fighting Scot mentor. The Rutgers University graduate has a 173-96 !edger at Edinboro, and is 327-158 in 16 seasons as a head coach. That includes stops at Birmingham Southern (1978-83) and West Virginia Wesleyan (1987-89). All told, Walcavich-coached teams have wpn 20-ormore games ten times, including last year's Fighting Scot edition which finished 26-8. The Baro went on to win the PSAC Tournament, before losing in the semifinals of the NCAA East Regional. That marked Edinboro's third trip to the NCAA's in the last five years, with the 26 wins a new school record. In addition, Walcavich led Birmingham Southern to two NAIA national tournament appearances. Walcavich ranked among the top Division II coaches in winning percentage (28th) and victories (36th) entering the season. In all, five Edinboro teams have won 20-or-more games under Walcavich. SCOIJJING THE SCOTS The Soro has just two players averaging in double figures, with sophomore Michael Johnson leading the way at 15.1 ppg. However, after dropping in 58 points in his last two outings, including a career-best 34 markers at Clarion, the 6'5" forward was held to 8 points at California(Pa.), all in the first half. Johnson was near-perfect at Clarion, making 13 of 16 field goals and 4 of 5 free throws. He added 4 of 6 threepointers, just three shy of his career total. The high-flying Johnson is second in rebounding at 6.5 per game. In addition, Johnson is the Boro's "Sultan .of Swat", ranking third in Division II in blocked shots with 39. He has already climbed into ninth place in career blocks with 76. Previously not known for his outside touch, Johnson has made 11 of 22 three's, and is tied for the team lead in steals with 21 ... senior Jean Paul, a transfer from Indiana University, is the only other double digit operative at 11.1 ppg. The 6'3" guard stands second in assists (36), while making 15 of 42 three-pointers. He dropped in 13 points at Cal . .. sophomore Adam Kaufman served notice that he was one of the top playmaking guards in the conference a year ago when he set a Soro record with 273 assists, tying the PSAC standard. Kaufman is at it again, standing 12th in Division II in assists with 91. He also is tied for the lead in steals with 22, and has seen his scoring average rise to 8.8 ppg. He has made 15 triples in 43 tries ... Terrance Smith and Troy Stout are expected to round out the starting five. Smith is an acrobatic 6'6" sophomore who has battled foul problems, exiting early from six contests. The transfer from Sacramento City College is averaging 8.5 ppg. and 4.8 rpg. while playing just under twenty minutes a contest. He turned in a strong effort at Cal, leading the Scots in both scoring (16) and rebounding (8). Stout is a 6'6" senior wbo has started in the middle in 12 of 13 games. He is averaging 9.5 ppg. and a team-high 7.4 rpg. while shooting 52.8 percent from the floor, tops on the team ... Ian Johnson notched a career-high 21 points against Gannon to earn his first start of the season at Clarion. The 6'7" forward comes in at 8.6 ppg. and 5.5 rpg. and is shooting 52.5 percent from the floor ... in addition to Johnson, the Scots receive frontcourt relief from Rob Schodt, a 6'8" sophomore from nearby McDowell High School. Schadt is averaging 5.2 ppg., and is the team's top free throw shooter at 88.0 percent (22 of 25). He had a streak of 14 in a row snapped at Clarion ... freshman swing man James Dickerson reemerged at Clarion with some strong minutes, contributing 7 points and 5 rebounds off the bench. Dickerson averages 3.3 ppg.
