Field Hockey
Bloomsburg's Field Hockey team will be aiming
for sectional honors this fall when they participate in
the Susquehanna Field Hockey Association
tournament at Susquehanna University November 8
and 9. Joan Williams, a freshman fullback, received
honorable mention last year, and it is expected that
six more players will receive recognition this year.
B.S.C. had a 7-1-1 record last fall and wlll be
playing a stronger schedule this year. Top
opponents in 1975 are expected to be Bucknell
University, Susquehanna University, Lock Haven
S.C. and Wilkes College.
Field Hockey became a varsity sport at
Bloomsburg in 1962, with Eleanor Wray as coach.

Mary Gardner took over as coach in 1974. She is
looking forward to the fall when several of last year's
strong varsity performers will be back to give the
team added experience.

Basketball
The varsity basketball program has had steady growth, both in
quantity and quality, since its inception in 1962.
The teams have always had a successful won-loss record, but
team data has been kept for only the past six years. The
Huskiettes have a winning percentage of 79% for this span of
time.
During the last three years of competition the team has won
26 games and lost 4 for a winning percentage of 86.6%. The
1973-74 team went undefeated, a "first" in the history of all
women's sports at SSC. The 1974-75 Huskiettes sported a
record of ten wins and one loss during regular season play. In
addition to their outstanding record this team also
accomplished a "first" - they were the first SSC women's
basketball team ever selected to participate in the EAIAW
(Eastern Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women)
Invitational Basketball Tournament held at Edinboro State
College on March 8 and 9, 1975. The highlight of the tournament
for the Huskiettes was their upset victory over third-seeded
Villanova University.

Women's Varsity Sports

~

Four women's varsity sports - field hockey, baskltball,
swimming and tennis have been a part of Bloomsburg State
College's strong intercollegiate sports program for several
years. During the 1974-75 season Bloomsburg's women athletes
won statewide honors in both swimming and basketball
competition.

Swimming and Diving
The Swimming and Diving team will go
into its second season at SSC with a
ten-meet schedule that will be considerably
stronger than last year's six-meet season.
The team, composed of freshmen and
sophomores, turned in a 3-3 record. The
entire varsity team will be facing strong
competition from several promising incoming freshmen, and Coach Mary Ga~dner is
looking forward to a competitive season, in
the battle for positions as well as in the
meets.
West Virginia, Glassboro State, Temple,
East Stroudsburg and Binghampton have
been added to the schedule and in addition
Coach Gardner is hoping to schedule several
co-ed meets.
Last winter four girls qualified for the
Eastern Regional Championships. They were
Carla DeVries, Tina DeVries, Jan Crossmore
and Connie Corso. This year the girls will be
aiming for the Easterns, as well as the
A.I.A.W. National meets.

Tennis
When the eighteen grasstex surface courts were
completed in 1972, the women's tennis varsity was
organized in the fall with practice sessions only.
Competition was first scheduled in the spring of
1973 with a record of 1 win and 4 losses . In 1973,
because the fall weather is ideal for tennis,
competition was scheduled in the fall as well as the
spring. Last fall our record was 5 wins and 1 loss.
During the spring season the girls won 3 and lost 1.
We have come a long way in three years. Matches
are scheduled with Bucknell University, Susquehanna University, Wilkes College, College Misericordia, Marywood College, Lycoming College,
SUNY-Binghamton, Kutztown and Lock Haven State
College.

Beth McKay Jr./transfer Wm. Tennett H.S. Warminster, Pa.
Beth played 3rd singles in high school and has played in local
and USL TA tournaments in Bucks County . Her strokes and serve
are beautiful and were a great help to team members with lesser
skill. Beth did not return this spring term .
Anne McMunn
Jr.
Williamsport H.S.
Williamsport, Pa.
Anne played #1 in the tennis squad until Beth arrived and is
expected to be #1 in the spring . She played #5 position in high
school and has entered several tournaments in and around
Williamsport . Anne is very busy in the Student Government
Association as Recording Secretary and Vice President but still
finds time to practice her drives, serves and volleys, which are
good , hard strokes .
Sheryl Greiner
Sr.
Penncrest H.S.
Media, Pa.
Sheryl is student teaching second semester so she w i ll not
play in the spring. She has played only 3 or 4 years but is a
strong coordinated athlete . She and Debby Young won all their
tennis doubles matches in the fall.
Susan Wexler Fr. Lower Moreland H.S. Huntington Valley, Pa.
It is obvious Sue had instruction in tennis for her skill is

excellent and she played #2 position on her high school team .
Deborah K. Young So. Garnet Valley H.S. Concordville, Pa .
Debby had only 2 or 3 years of tennis prior to coming to BSC .
Her desire to learn and hit each ball no matter where it lands in
the court has made her a valuable partner of our no loss tennis
number one doubles team .
Valerie Cronin
Sr. ·
Great Valley H.S.
Devault, Pa.
Valerie played tennis 4 years in high school and plays #6
position in singles and #3 position in doubles on the BSC team.
This spring she is student teaching which makes it difficult to
find the time to practice .
Jenny Yost Sr. Mechanicsburg Area H.S. Mechanicsburg, Pa.
Jenny is now student teaching but in the fall as part of the
#3 doubles team she worked hard to attain quickness of net play
and firmness of her drives .
Laura Stonebach So. Quakertown Comm. H.S. Quakertown, Pa.
Laura played #1 position in high school and she is a good left
handed player causing some concern on the part of her
opponent due to her handedness . She furnishes the team with
depth and no telling when she' ll be pushing toward the top 6.
