INTH.ODUCTION
In presenting "THE Fir,:i 'l' POSTOFFICES AiW POSTMASTERS OF COLUMBIA,
MONTOUR, AND SULLIVAN COUNTIES," its compiler and the Columbia County
Historical Society c:!re acutely aware· that there may be errors. Federal
Recordst from which ti.1e infonnation derives, while full, are at times
j.mprecise; similar na:11e s abound in north central and northeastern Pennsylvania and the correct distinction of them often proves to be a
taxing exercise. However, we are confident that in general the information is accurate , and we not only ask indulgence where it may be called for but _a lso r e c:ues t correspondence with us in the event the reader
believes correction is in order.
Thank you for your coo;_J eration in making this booklet series a success.
We look forward to ce~vi ng you again soon.

Compiler, Arthur r:ech t. Edi ting by Edwin E. Barton, Chainnan, and
Crai g A. Ne·w ton, member, representing the Publications Committee of t he Columbia County Historical S-ociety.
At~ EDITOR'S NOTE:- The inclusion of post offices by the same name in
different counties is :)robably to be accounted for by the fonnation,
in several cases, of one county out of parts of another. In several
cases, there was a shifting of a common boundary of two adjoining
counties. Such chanc es, or some of them, are indicated beloi•
•
Schuylkill County was formed out of parts of Berks and Northampton
Counties in 1811. Some parts of Columbia County were added in 1818.
Lycoming County was erected out of Northumberland County, April 13,
1795.
Columbia County was erected out of Northumberland County, March 22,
1813. It included a western part, which later became Montour. The
western boundary, first of Columbia, then of Montour, with Northumberland, was shifted several times.
Montour County was erected out of the western part of Colµmbia, May
3, 1850.
Sullivan County was erected out of parts of Bradford and Wyoming
Counties, March 15, 1347.
