Raymond Eshleman, division manager of Tri-Co. Foods Corp., subsidiary of Hanover Canning Company, spoke to the meteorology class of BSC on the relationship between meteorological elements and heating units in growth of the current pea crop. Members of the class have been supplying Tri-Co Corporation with daily heating unit reports and the amount of daily sunshine which are important elements affecting the pea crop. The college is cooperating with local industry in supplying such information without charge. Shown (left to right) Dr. William B. Sterling, professor of geography; Dr. Wendelin R. Frantz, chairman of the Geography and Earth Science Department; Charles Shupe, a senior in elementary education with an area of concentration in geography; and Raymond Eshleman, division manager of Tri-Co Foods. Shupe is taking a reading with a hand held anemometer of the wind velocity on the roof of the new Hartline Science Center were various meteorology equipment is located. The instrument in the foreground on top of an air vent is a Stokes recorder which is one of a number of new instruments to be installed at the College under the long-term plan of development for the Geography and Earth Science Department under the leadership of President Harvey A. Andruss. The Stokes recorder made in England records the total sunshine for each day on a chart that coincides with the correct sun time each day. These records will be of value to the community of Bloomsburg as well as to the college. Agriculture and industry, as well as prospective residents, are interested in the total of annual sunshine in an area.
