1949-01-28 Counterattack
Item Description
Washington state's Committee on Un-American Activities is lauded for having "crystallized" the issue of communist infiltration in American educational institutions. The newsletter explains that expelling Communists is not expulsion for beliefs because, as members of the Party, they have certain requirements, such as indoctrinating students. The ouster of Reverend William Howard Melish as assistant rector is applauded by Counterattack because of his support for Communists. Other victories include further support in New York City for cooperating with anti-communist efforts and a victory by the American Jewish League Against Communism. The United Electrical Union, depicted as communist-led, is accused of promoting communism through a classroom kit for teachers. The case of a deported German composer who cooperated with the Nazis is promoted as an antecedent to use against the "Red Dean." Counterattack also supports a woman who was sued for protesting the appearance of Paul Draper and Larry Adler.
