A mobile art therapy studio for underserved populations
Abstract
S&C: Mobile Art Therapy Studio’s (“The Art Bus”) mission is to provide accessible, quality mental health and art therapy services to underserved communities, which includes but is not limited to individuals who struggle financially, people with limited English proficiency, individuals in rural communities, individuals who lack access to quality education, people who are ethnic minorities, and those who are experiencing homelessness and individuals with disabilities. S&C: Mobile Art Therapy Studio aims to acquire funding through public and private grants to purchase and modify a bus or recreational vehicle (RV) into a mobile Art Therapy studio. A mobile platform is the best method to reach this population. Art Therapy can give
underserved communities insight into their diagnoses, teach coping skills for managing symptoms, break down barriers, foster connections, and address emotions and trauma while strengthening community bonds and creating social support. With the COVID-19 pandemic, society has become more comfortable engaging in mental health discussions, which brings the perfect time to continue this conversation one community at a time (Khaldun & McNulty, 2022). S&C: Mobile Art Therapy Studio has the potential to be a transformative force- empowering individuals and enriching lives. I believe it’s more than just a bus; it’s an access to hope and healing on wheels.
