Item Description
Abstract
The original East Stroudsburg University mace was commissioned by the ESU Alumni Association in 1969 for the inauguration of 4th President Frank D. Sills. Designed by local Pocono artist Richard E. Phillips, the mace is borrowed from royalty and symbolizes power and authority of the institution to award degrees. This redesigned version from 1987 by the same artist, is currently made of cherry wood and measures 38 inches long. It has overlays of hemlock dating from 1893 which was taken from the original Stroud Hall. The mace is used at all official university functions dealing with academics.
