COMPUTER LAB ASSISTANTS
Computer lab assistants in the Carlson Library have overall responsibility for monitoring the
printing and photocopying processes. Lab assistants do not perform library functions such
as shelving books and charging/discharging materials. Specifically, lab assistants will…

Assist patrons with:
• Computer printing
• Photocopying
• Downloading data to e-mail accounts and/or diskettes
• Formatting patrons’ diskettes
• Operating the photoscanner
• Using the Vendacard and Value Add machines
Maintain printers and photocopiers by:
• Replenishing machines with paper, ribbons, and/or toner, as needed
• Insure that all printers and photocopiers are filled with paper
• Clearing paper jams, when necessary
• Performing “self tests” of printers when toner is replaced
Provide general computer troubleshooting, as specified by the supervisor.
Perform preventative maintenance to public terminals. This entails:
• Cleaning the computer desktop of unwanted shortcuts/icons
• Emptying the cache
• Emptying the recycle bin
• Dusting computer screens and keyboards
Maintain certain statistical information related to their areas of responsibility, such as:
• Hourly head count of computer use
• Computer/printer/scanner/photocopier assists
• Printer/photocopier maintenance
Lab assistants are expected to learn, and continue to improve their skills in, the
programs provided for patron use such as: Microsoft Office, Claris Works, and Digital
Chisel.
Computer lab assistants, like all employees, must notify the library as soon as possible
when a work shift will be missed. To “call off” sick, contact the following:
• Circulation Desk at X2301
o (speak directly with Judy Bowser or Kathy Bell). If unavailable, call…
• Reference Office at X1841
o (Karen Sheesman or the Reference Librarian on duty.) If unavailable, call…
• Systems Office at X2344 (Lori Norris) or X2017(Bill Trimble)
Note: After 9:00 p.m., contact attendant on duty at the Circulation Desk (X2301).
All questions that are not directly related to timesheets or machine maintenance must be
directed to a reference librarian.
In addition to established work performance standards, please note that compromising any
security passwords constitutes reason for immediate dismissal.
