BACCHUS GAMMA
Constitution and Bylaws
Mission
The members of BACCHUS GAMMA make it their mission to promote and educate their peers to
consider and develop responsible attitudes towards the use and nonuse of alcohol and other drugs. Our
job is to educate students, not enforce students, to make wiser, smarter, healthier decision.
Article I. Name:
Section 1. The name of the organization shall combine two previous Clarion University organization
names: BACCHUS GAMMA.
Section 2. The name BACCHUS stands for “Boosting Alcohol Consciousness Concerning the Health of
University Students”. The name GAMMA standing for: “Greeks Advocating the Mature Management of
Alcohol.”
Article II. Purpose
Section 1. Recognizing that alcohol abuse is a major problem impacting health and safety of the students
and the greater campus community, BACCHUS GAMMA shall not condone or support illegal
consumption of alcoholic beverages. By increasing awareness of healthy alternatives, members of
BACCHUS GAMMA will take an active stand for mature management of alcohol and abstain from the use
of associated illegal drugs.
Article III. Meetings
Section 1. BACCHUS GAMMA will have weekly meetings during the course of each semester. The date,
time, and location of said meetings will be determined by the group at the end of each semester.
Article IV. Student Membership
Section 1. Membership in BACCHUS GAMMA shall be open to all current students of Clarion University.
Section 2. In order to be regarded as a voting member of BACCHUS GAMMA with voting privileges, a
student may not miss more than two unexcused meetings per semester. Meetings may be considered
excused by turning in an excuse to the secretary and must be reviewed and approved by the President.
Section 3. An action performed by a member of BACCHUS GAMMA that is found to be unbecoming
could be grounds for removal from the organization. Any member may make the motion to have
another member removed. The voting members at that meeting will then vote on the removal, where a
three fourths vote is necessary.
Article V. Dues
Section 1. The amount of fees/dues shall be set by the Treasurer at the second meeting during each
semester.
Article VI. Associated Members
Section 1. All Clarion University faculty and staff are eligible to hold associate membership in BACCHUS
GAMMA. Associated members are defined as those members who are not students, yet still want to be
involved with the organization; therefore, associated members may neither vote nor hold office, but
otherwise, are entitled to all rights, privileges, benefits, and activities of the organization.
Article VII. Officers
Section 1. The elected officers of BACCHUS GAMMA shall consist of the following: President, Vice
President, Secretary, and Treasurer.
Section 2. The elected officers shall compromise the Executive Committee and they shall coordinate all
activities of BACCHUS GAMMA. There will be other chairs within the organization, such as community
service, marketing, membership, and programming; however, these chairs will fall under the delegation
of the executive committee. Other chairs can be created as the organization sees the need.
Section 3. The following officer positions shall be two semesters (one academic year long): President,
Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. All other chair positions will be one semester long each.
Article VIII. Nominations and Voting
Section 1. A majority vote of the BACCHUS GAMMA membership shall be required for the election of the
officers.
Section 2. Nominations for one semester chairs shall be made at the first meeting in November.
Elections for those chairs shall be determined by the President or two meetings after nominations. New
officers and chairs shall go through a transition period working with the previous officers and chairs to
learn their position thoroughly, and will assume duties at the beginning of the following semester.
Nominations for the spring semester will be made at the first meeting in March, and the same
procedure will be used as in the fall semester. In order to be eligible for nomination, individuals must
have a 2.6 cumulative grade point average and be in good academic standing.
Section 3. Nominations must be made verbally by the person themselves, or by another member.
Members must be at the meeting to accept the nomination.
Section 4. In the event that non candidate receives a simple majority of the votes for any office, there
shall be a runoff election between the two candidates receiving the greatest number of votes.
Article IX. Duties of officers
Section 1. A. President:
1. Conduct the meetings of BACCHUS GAMMA and the Executive Committee.
2. Call special meetings of BACCHUS GAMMA and the Executive Committee.
3. Initiate such projects and programs as he/she shall deem necessary for the benefit and welfare of the
organization.
B. Vice President:
1. Have a working knowledge of the duties and responsibilities of the President and assume these duties
and responsibilities in his or her absence.
2. Fulfill such other obligations or responsibilities as shall be assigned to him/her by the President.
3. Supervise all committees of the chairs and encourage them to meet regularly, set goals, and make
regular reports at BACCHUS GAMMA meetings.
C. Treasurer:
1. Collect and account for all dues, bills, fees, and other monies belonging to the organization.
2. Report at each meeting the financial status of BACCHUS GAMMA
3. Submit an annual budget
D. Secretary:
1. Record accurate minutes of BACCHUS GAMMA meetings, Executive Committee meetings, and any
other special or called meetings.
2. Read the minutes of meetings and collect attendance.
3. Draft and execute any correspondence assigned by the President or by the Executive Committee.
Article X. Advisor
Section 1. The membership of BACCHUS GAMMA will select a Clarions University faculty/staff
member(s) to serve as advisor as the need arises. A simple majority vote of the membership will be
required to appoint an advisor.
Section 2. The advisor(s) will be non-voting members of BACCHUS GAMMA and will serve as an ex-offcio
member(s) of all its committees.
Article XI. Amendments
Section 1. These by-laws may be amended by a unanimous vote of the Executive Committee. Voting
members may rebut an amendment made by the Executive Committee by three-fourths of the
membership.
Article XII. Ratification
Section 1. These bylaws, and its amendments, shall become effective upon ratification by the members
of BACCHUS GAMMA, and following the approval of the Student Senate of Clarion University of
Pennsylvania, the vice president for students and university affairs, and the president of Clarion
University.
