Clarion Sport Management Association
BYLAWS
ARTICLE 1. – NAME
The name of this organization shall be the Clarion University Sport Management
Association (CUSMA).
ARTICLE 2. – PURPOSE
The purpose of the Clarion University Sport Management Association shall be to
promote Clarion University sport management and the sport management field through student
collaboration and strengthening professional networking.
The benefits of CUSMA include making connections with other students interested in the
growing field of sport management and also with professionals already in the field.
Individuals will wish to join CUSMA because it provides them with the opportunity to
create and build both professional and personal networks as well as collaborate with other
classmates in the field.
ARTICLE 3. – MEMBERSHIP
Section 3.1 – Eligibility: Membership is open to all Clarion University students who
desire to promote the mission, ethics, and morals of CUSMA. For membership entry,
hopefuls must speak with either Dr. Doug Knepp or one of the board members. Once in
the club, members must actively participate in club activities and be present to the
majority of club meetings.
Section 3.2 – Rights of Members: All members reserve the right to vote on club issues
and every member has the opportunity to make it on the board*.
Section 3.3 – Requirements of Members: Recognized members of CUSMA shall:
Be in good academic standing
Attend at least 75% of all club meetings**
Be involved and show interest in bettering the club
Be involved in 100% of fundraising events and activities
Section 3.4 – Membership Fees: All members must pay a fee of $15.00 once every
semester. This money shall go towards funding for club t-shirts, fundraisers, and various
other club activities.
Section 3.5 – Dismissal: Members may be dismissed from CUSMA if they are believed
to not have the morals and values of the club at interest and/or if they do not meet the
requirements discussed in section 3.3.
*Certain restrictions apply. See section 4.2 for details.
**Excuses for missed meetings shall be discussed with Dr. Knepp.
ARTICE 4. – DUTIES AND ELECTIONS OF THE OFFICERS
Section 4.1 - Officers: Officers of the organization shall be called “The Board” and it
will consist of the following positions:
President – Lauren Henderson
Vice President – Shaquan McPhaul
Fundraising Chair/Treasurer – Kayla Henderson
Community Service Chair/Secretary – Delrey Taylor
CU Connect Contact – Lauren Henderson
Section 4.2 – Election Process: Elections for the following year shall be held during the
second-to-last month of every spring semester (April). Only Clarion University sport
management majors shall be eligible for board positions.
Section 4.3 – Majority Vote: The board shall be elected by all active members of the
CUSMA via majority vote. Members can nominate themselves and/or other members.
Nominations must be turned in to Dr. Doug Knepp at least one month prior to elections.
ARTICLE 5. – ROLE OF CAMPUS ADVISOR
Section 5.1 – Advisor Selection: The advisor of the club must be a Clarion University
faculty member. The advisor of CUSMA is Dr. Doug Knepp. The fulfillment of this role
was selected by members of the club due to the fact that Dr. Knepp is the head of the
sport management program at Clarion University.
Section 5.2: Advisor Power: The CUSMA advisor has overruling power over the club
when it comes to supervising finances, scheduling events, setting up meetings, and so on.
Members of the club still have voting rights in club decisions, however, the advisor has
the final say in all decisions made that affect the club.
ARTICLE 6. – MEETINGS
Section 6.1 – Meeting Frequency: Meetings shall be held weekly. The CUSMA will
meet on Mondays at 7:30 P.M. unless otherwise specified by the board and/or Dr. Doug
Knepp.
Section 6.2 – Statement of Quorum: A minimum of 10 people and a maximum of 100
people should be present at all meetings.
Section 6.3 – Statement of Majority:
Section 6.4 – Meeting Procedure: The procedure of meetings should be professional yet
relaxed. A board member shall open each meeting with the announcement of upcoming
events and important dates/information about the club. Following that, the topics
necessary to be discussed at each meeting shall be covered.
Section 6.5 – Special Meetings: If necessary, special meetings shall be called by the
board and the board only. Regular club members cannot call special meetings but may
request such meetings to be held by speaking with board members. There shall be a 24hour notice given to all club members, with leniency given to those who cannot make it.
Notification of such meetings shall be sent via email to member addresses provided to the
club upon joining.
ARTICLE 7. – FINANCES AND FUNDING
Section 7.1 – Dues: There will not be dues required to be paid to the club. All monies
needed for club activities shall be fundraised.
Section 7.2 – Fund Requests: Funds will not be requested from the Student Senate
unless CUSMA wishes to participate in an activity that requires the club to raise funds
that would be out of the realm of possibility for fundraising techniques.
Section 7.3 – Self-Support: With the exception of extenuating circumstances, CUSMA
shall be a self-supporting club by way of fundraising activities.
ARTICLE 8. – AMENDING, SUSPENDING, AND ACCEPTING
Any CUSMA member may request to change the bylaws at any club meeting. After the
request is made, the club shall hold an open discussion on the issue, and then the issue
shall be brought to a vote. The bylaws of CUSMA may be changed by way of majority
vote at these club meetings, with the final approval of the club advisor. Following this,
all club-approved changes to the bylaws must then be approved by the Student Senate,
the Vice President of Student Affairs, and the President of Clarion University. If and
when any issue is approved, the bylaws shall be changed immediately following the
approval by the aforementioned. The updated version of the bylaws must be uploaded to
CU Connect within one week of notification of approval.
ARTICLE 9. – RATIFICATION
These Bylaws, and its amendments, shall become effective upon ratification by the
members of Clarion University Sport Management Association and following the
approval of the Student Senate of Clarion University of Pennsylvania, the vice president
for student & university affairs, and the president of Clarion University.
