MINUTES OF THE FACILITIES PLANNING COMMITTEE MEETING
CLARION UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA
CLARION, PENNSYLVANIA
May 14, 2013 – 10:00 a.m.
Carrier Building, Room 114
Members Present: Chairman Jon Beal, Diana Brush, Pete Fackler (Ex-officio), Deb Fleeger, David
Love, Deb Sobina, Ric Taylor (Ex-officio), Chad Thomas
Others Present: Linda Campbell, Ron Nowaczyk, Todd Pfannestiel, Chris Reber, Harry Tripp,
Marcy Trombetta, Karen Whitney, members of the Perkins Eastman team (David Levo, Alan
Schlossberg, Christine Albright) and Architect Tom McGilloway, PLA, with Mahan Rykiel
Associates, Inc.
Facilities Master Plan – David Levo of Perkins Eastman prefaced the meeting with Perkins
Eastman’s status of the Facilities Master Plan. He noted the team is now at a point where they
are prepared to pivot to stages allowing them to chart out potential institutional changes,
specifically in regard to landscaping. This is viewed as the opportunity to pull the entire campus
together, solve character issues, and provide an effective link between existing buildings and
the surrounding environment. Regarding the time line, it is hoped this portion can be
completed by November, 2013.
Mr. McGilloway then provided a presentation highlighting other campuses that have used costeffective ways to implement their landscaping plan by use of canopy trees, mass shrubs, the
focusing of flowering species in heavily trafficked areas, and allowing more challenging areas to
naturalize as a means of reducing long-term costs.
An interactive workshop exercise was then conducted wherein attendees were asked to assess
the current Clarion landscape by providing best/worst case scenarios in terms of campus areas
that should remain unchanged, personal favorites, and those areas perceived as presenting the
worst appearance. Lengthy discussion followed regarding entry ways to the campus, space
names and discussion of the areas where students naturally gather for outdoor activities. In
conclusion participants were asked to envision the Clarion campus landscape ten years hence.
A similar exercise will also be conducted at Venango at some time in the future.
Adjournment: The meeting adjourned at 12:10 p.m.
