The President’s Message…
Dear Faculty and Coach Colleagues,
It is the time of year for giving thanks. In all the stress and frustration of creating
PennWest, it can be difficult to feel gratitude. I am, however, grateful for all of you and
your solidarity. If we stick together, we can accomplish much, even turning three
separate universities into a brand-new institution.
In recent weeks, the Interim Curriculum Committee has done a herculean job of reviewing and approving new
courses. Behind the scenes, we have been working on a plan to transition from the ICC to a permanent
University Curriculum Committee, while still rapidly approving courses and, soon, degree programs. Details will
be forthcoming, and elections for the members of the new UCC will be held before winter break.
As I’m sure you know, the Provost decided to strictly limit the number of general education course offerings, in
the name of “efficiency,” which leads to lost opportunities for our students to learn about disciplines and ideas
that weren’t available to them in high school. In addition, a number of programs across the University are
under review. Deans are asking the faculty to find further “efficiencies” in their programs, with some
concentrations or even entire degree programs possibly being eliminated from the
program array. How does this serve the needs of our students?
The three PennWest APSCUF Chapter Presidents have met with President Pehrsson and
Provost Miller numerous times over the past couple weeks, including a Meet & Discuss
meeting on November 18. We have asked questions and pressed our points. The
President and Provost have said repeatedly that this contraction is necessary because of
the precipitous enrollment decline (20% lost over two years) and financial distress (a
loss of $21 million). Where does this contraction end?
In solidarity,

November 2022

Chapter President Joyce Overly with
APSCUF endorsed candidate and
future PA Governor, Josh Shapiro
