Dr. Harry Ausprich began his tenure July 15, 1985 as the 16th
president of Bloomsburg University. His appointment follows that of
former president James H. McCormick, who is currently serving as
Chancellor for the State System of Higher Education in Pennsylvania,
and Dr. Larry Jones, who served as Bloomsburg's chief executive
t,
officer for two years on an acting and interim basis.
Prior to assuming his duties at Bloomsburg, Ausprich served at Kent State
University as dean of the College of Fine and Professional Arts from 1978 to 1985.
While there, he was instrumental in implementing a program in fashion design and
merchandising that has gained a national reputation. In addition, he served as dean of the
Blossom Festival School Program in cooperation with the Cleveland Orchestra. In
previous years, he served as dean of the Faculty of Arts and later as dean of the Faculty
of Arts and Humanities, both at SUNY Buffalo. While at Buffalo, he developed a
proposal for a program in dance and for a series of interdisciplinary seminars in the arts.
In the early 1970s, he worked at the University of Northern Iowa as dean of the College
of Humanities and Fine Arts. Classroom teaching experiences and departmental
chairperson responsibilities comprised his major assignments at Indiana State University
and Memphis State University.
His academic background includes a bachelor of science degree from New York
University, College at Buffalo, a master of science degree from the University of
Wisconsin in theater and broadcasting, and a doctorate from Michigan State University in
communications and theater.
Mary Gardner took over the reins as Bloomsburg's athletic
director in July of this year after serving in the capacity on an interim
basis for six months. Prior to becoming the head of the Department of
Athletics, she was the university's associate athletic director for one and
one-half years.
Her new duties include overseeing the daily activities of the
university's 18 varsity teams, budget control, and fundraising to aid the general scholarship
fund. In addition, Gardner directs activities in the university's three major athletic facilities
as well as the many athletic practice and playing fields.
Before assuming her athletic administration duties two years ago, she was head
coach of the women's swimming and diving program for 12 seasons and directed the
men's swimming and diving unit for one season. Her women's squads posted an overall
record of 88-28 in dual-meet action and finished as the Pennsylvania Conference
runnerup six years in a row from 1981 to 1986. She coached 44 performers to multiple
All-American honors as the Huskies' coach. In addition, she served as the university's
first head field hockey coach and registered a four-year record of 20-12-9. She also
served as the school's Director of Equal Opportunity in Sports (DEOS).
The Hatboro, Pa., native earned her bachelor's and master's degrees at East
Stroudsburg where she was a four-year letterwinner in field hockey and swimming. She
was a three-time national champion in the breaststroke.

-Pete Adrian is entering his third season in charge of the
,I Bloomsburg program and has continued to establish the Huskies as one
1 of the teams to beat in the Pennsylvania Conference Eastern Division.
In his initial two years, Adrian's clubs have posted marks of 7-2-1 and
8-3 to give the coach an overall record of 15-5-1. Last season's 8-3
finish marked only the fifth time a Bloomsburg squad has won as many
contests in a season. The only other clubs to accomplish the feat were in 1948 (9-0),
in 1948 (9-0), 1949 (8-1), 1951 (8-0), and 1985 (12-1). The latter year, the Huskies won
the conference championship and reached the national semifinals before suffering their
only loss of the season. Adrian is the 15th head football coach since Bloomsburg became
a four-year public institution in 1927.
Bloomsburg has appeared in the NCAA Division II national rankings in each of
Adrian's two seasons and finished the 1987 campaign rated 14th in the nation's final poll.
In addition, the Huskies have shown up among conference and national statistical
leaders, both individually and as a team, on several occasions.
During his short tenure, 16 players have earned All-Pennsylvania Conference
Eastern Division honors, and three performers have earned spots on the All-East team.
His teams have been among the passing and total offense leaders in the conference both
years and finished sixth in total defense a year ago.
The head coaching position at Bloomsburg is a first for the 38-year old native of
Brilliant, Ohio, as he came to the school after spending the previous 10 seasons as
defensive coordinator at the University of Rhode Island. Working under head coach Bob
Griffin, he helped lead the Rams to consecutive 10-3 records in 1984 and 1985 and
appearances in the NCAA Division I-AA national playoffs. Rhode Island also captured
three Yankee Conference titles winning crowns in 1981, 1984, and 1985. During his 10
seasons at the New England school, the teams compiled an overall mark of 58-51-1 and
was awarded the Lambert/Meadowlands Cup in both 1984 and 1985, symbolizing
football supremacy among eastern Division I-AA clubs.
Prior to returning to Rhode Island, where he served as an assistant coach during
the 1970 and 1971 seasons, Adrian was the defensive line coach under Griffin at Idaho
State University in Pocatello, Idaho, from 1972 to 1975. He was also the school's head
golf coach.
In addition to his football duties, Adrian has also been an instructor in the
physical education departments at Idaho State and Rhode Island. He holds memberships
in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), Fellowship of Christian Athletes,
and the Masonic Lodge.
Before his first stint at Rhode Island, he was the freshman coach at West Virginia
University following his graduation from that school in 1968. While at West Virginia, he
played linebacker for the Mountaineers and served as the freshman team captain in his
first year.
Adrian earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education at West
Virginia in 1970 and his master's degree from Rhode Island in 1971.
In high school, he was a five-sport letterwinner at Brilliant High School in
baseball, basketball, football, golf, and track and field.

It will be the beginning of a new era of sorts for the Huskies in 1988 as the
graduation of the school's all-time leading passer and second-leading rusher will force
third-year head coach Pete Adrian to make up for a duo that accounted for over 80
percent of his team's offense a year ago.
Quarterback Jay DeDea, who threw for 7,026 yards and 56 touchdowns in his
career, and Tom Martin, who rushed for 2,709 yards in three seasons with the club, have
departed leaving a huge void to fill offensively.
A year ago, the club registered an 8-3 mark and finished the campaign ranked
14th in the final NCAA Division II national poll. The Huskies faced a tough schedule
last season, and the slate set for them this year includes six units that were nationally
rated at some time during the 1987 season.
However, a quick look at the Huskies' 1988 preseason depth chart indicates one
thing. Experience. One of the largest senior classes in many seasons will play a huge
role as coach Pete Adrian's club attempts to post the school's fifth-consecutive winning
season. Of the 25 seniors on the roster, 17 are projected in starting roles.
The performance of a veteran line will be one of the keys to the success of the
Huskies' offense. Eight quality players give that area more depth than it has enjoyed
over the past several seasons. The return of two-time All-Pennsylvania Conference
center John Fulmer in the middle adds to a line that made constant improvement as the
1987 season progressed. Fulmer, a senior, missed the entire season with the second knee
injury of his career.
Fulmer's return will allow the coaching staff to move senior Bob Preston to either
guard or tackle where he performed prior to stepping into the center slot. Preston's
versatility makes him a valuable asset during the 11-game stretch. Senior Dave Pysher
made the successful transition from defense a year ago and will most likely be in one of
the guard spots. Another defensive transplant, senior John Avia, enjoyed a good season at
a tackle position and will be back in that role.
The fifth starter could come from a group of four players including yet another
player in his final year of eHgibility, Scott Long, or three sophomores, Rob Grow, Brian
Crouthamel, or Carl Edwards. No matter what the starting line looks like in each contest,
all of those performers will get ample playing time as the season continues.
Senior Paul Venesky, DeDea's understudy for the past three seasons, appears
ready to step into the starting role. He has seen limited playing time completing 11 of 31
pass attempts for 117 yards and three touchdowns. Sophomore Dave Robson looks like
the number two quarterback entering the season.
Senior Leonard Bluitt rejoined the Huskies last year after missing the 1986 season
and quickly earned a spot next to Martin in the backfield. He rushed for 194 yards on 52
carries and caught 20 passes for an additional 214 yards. He gives the club a potential
scoring threat from anywhere on the field every time he touches the ball.
Eric Speece and Mike Medina saw action in reserve roles a year ago and should
see a lot more playing time this season. Speece gained 585 rushing yards in two seasons
at Lock Haven before transferring to Bloomsburg where he picked up 70 yards on 11
carries last season. Medina possesses the most strength of any of the Huskies' backs and
rushed 14 times to gain 56 yards in 1987.
Two of the team's top receivers from last season will provide the main targets for
Venesky at wide receiver and tight end, respectively. Junior Jeff Sparks caught 28 passes
for 431 yards and seven touchdowns at his split end position, while sophomore Paul
6
Lonergan made the most of his fast year with the club by hauling 24 passes for 217 yards
and one score. A pair of players, who are also in their second seasons with the Huskies,
Jon Smith and Stef Kern, came out of the squad's spring drills as two of the team's top
receivers. Senior Dave Brewster gives the Huskies a fourth quality receiver on the
outside.
Defensively, nine of eleven starters are back including last season's top four
tacklers. Linebackers Wade Pickett and Gene Straface combined for 168 tackles in the
middle of the Huskies' defensive unit. Pickett's total of 91 tackles included 33 solo hits,
and Straface led the team with 35 unassisted tackles and totalled 77 for the season. He
also registered two sacks and recovered two fumbles. Pickett added one interception and
a fumble recovery. The senior duo will be rejoined this season by Brian Angney, who
returns for his final season after sitting out last season with a knee injury.
On the outside, both starters also return for their final campaigns with Todd
Leitzel penciled in at one defensive end position and Steph Pettit listed on the other side.
Leitzel led the team in the sack department with five and also contributed 36 tackles,
while Pettit wasn't far behind in getting to opposing quarterbacks as he was credited with
four and one-half sacks. He had a total of 50 tackles a year ago. Darryl Richards
returned to the squad for the spring and rapidly made an impression. He enters the season
as the third performer at the end position.
The recent move of linebacker John Hellgren to nose guard will help give the
Huskies a very active and mobile front line. Hellgren saw limited action behind Pickett
and Straface last season, contributing 13 tackles, but moved into the number one position
up front during spring workouts. Senior Pete Andolpho earned the opportunity for some
playing time at nose guard with his performance in the spring.
Last season, the reassignment of another performer, Joshua Lee, from defensive
end to tackle added a completely new dimension to the Huskies' defense. He, along with
three-year starter Chris Gross on the other side, should give the club an excellent pair to
flank Hellgren. Lee was very active after the move inside as he recorded 54 tackles, three
and one-half sacks, recovered two fumbles, and caused two others. Gross equalled Lee's
tackle, sack, and fumble recovery totals while causing three additional fumbles and
breaking up five passes.
One of the team's top athletes, Bruce Linton, will man one of the corner positions,
and another veteran, Tom Heavey, will be on the opposite side. Linton led the squad in
the pass breakup category, knocking down 15 opponent passes and was credited with two
interceptions and 44 tackles. Heavey had 31 tackles and two interceptions. A trio of
players who need game experience, Brian Murphy, Jeff Naugle, and Trent Dennis, should
see playing time at the comerback spots. Dennis can also fill in at free safety.
Senior Dan Shutt will most likely move from strong safety to the free slot
Another pair of tested veterans, Delmas Woods and Ron Sahm, will both see plenty of
action at strong safety. Shutt contributed 37 tackles, while Woods and Sahm combined
for 50 hits. Both were important contributors on the special teams, and Sahm blocked an
extra point attempt and a punt last season.
Punter Jim Noye had a great season a year ago and has turned into a solid twostep punter. He averaged 32.6 yards per kick but pinned the opposition inside the 20yard line on numerous occasions.

Pete Andolpho, NG, 5-10, 210,junlor
Adds extreme quickness to the Huskies' front line and should see a lot
more playing time than a year ago. An excellent pass rusher who is
part of a group up front that is very active and mobile. Contributed
eight tackles last season in a limited role.
Brian Angney, LB, 6-0, 215, junior
Was one of the club's top linebackers before an injury forced him to
miss the entire 1987 season. Came back strong in the spring drills and
put himself in the position to challenge for a starting berth. Recorded
13 tackles and a fumble recovery as a sophomore.
John Avia, OT, 6-3, 275, senior
Moved from the defensive side of the football last season and
continually improved as the season progressed. Strength and work
ethic are his two biggest assets. Started at one of the tackle positions
last season and is projected in that role once again.
Leonard Bluitt, RB, 5-10, 185, senior
Excellent speed makes him a breakaway threat anytime he touches the
ball. Could handle the ball 25-35 times per game and is a fine
receiver. Gained 194 yards on 52 carries last season and had 20
,
catches for another 214 yards. Has three-year rushing totals of 147
carries for 594 yards.
Dave Brewster, WR, 5-9, 160, senior
May get the oportunity to play more after spending two seasons
behind some top notch veteran receivers. A very controlled receiver
who runs excellent patterns and catches the ball very well. Had one
reception a year ago and two the previous season.
Brian Crouthamel, OT, 6-5, 310, sophomore
Started eight games as a freshman member of the offensive line and
improved steadily. Needs to improve his quickness and technique but
could earn a starting tackle role again in 1988. Uses his sire to his
advantage as a good pass blocker.
Trent Dennis, DB, 6-0, 185, sophomore
His versatility allows him to play more than one position in the
defensive backfield which will increase his playing time this season.
Injury kept him out of several games last year, and he recorded four
tackles in limited action. One of the team's top athletes.
11
Carl Edwards, OG, 6-2, 260, sophomore
Used his first season to gain valuable experience and enjoyed a fine
spring practice session. Has put himself in position to be a big help
on the offensive line. Part of one of the deepest line groups in many
seasons.
~
John Fulmer, C, 6-2, 265, senior
Returns to the team after missing all of 1987 with a knee injury.
Has a vast amount of playing time and must be one of the leaders on
this year's team. A two-time all-conference performer who could be
the top center in the PC this season.
Chris Gross, DT, 6-6, 260, senior
A three-year starter who has made tremendous strides each season
and has turned into a solid player. Very active performer who had
54 tackles, two fumble recoveries, caused three fumbles, broke up
five pass plays, and recorded three sacks.
Rob Grow, OG, 6-2, 270, sophomore
Started 10 of the team's 11 games in his first season with the
Huskies but missed spring workouts due to an injury. Probably the
top all-armmd athlete on the line. Needs some work on his technique to become a very good player.
I<
Tom Heavey, DB, 5-9, 192,Junlor
Returned to a starting role last year after missing 1986 with an
injury. One of the fastest members of the team and is extremely
strong. Has made consistent improvement and is a good hitter who
had 31 tackles, five pass breakup,s and two interceptions last season.
John Hellgren, NG, 6-1, 235,Junlor
His versatility allowed a move from linebacker to nose guard where
he earned the top spot in the spring. Good strength and speed make
him a valuable asset at both positions. Should be one of the
defensive leaders. Made 13 tackles last season, seeing limited
playing time behind two veterans and on the special teams.
Stef Kern, WR, 5-9, 155, sophomore
Emerged as one of the Huskies' top three receivers during spring
drills and continues to consistently improve. Catches the ball better
than a year ago using his excellent speed and jumping ability to his
benefiL Could see action on either side.
12
Joshua Lee, DT, 6-3, 250, senior
Moved from defensive end to tackle during the season and made an
immediate impact. Great speed and quickness. Expected to be one of
the top performers in 1988. Lacks size for inside play but doesn't let
it deter him. Made 54 tackles, recovered two fumbles and caused two
others, and registered three and one-half sacks.
Todd Leitzel, DE, 6-1, 220, senior
Another three-year starter who should have a great final season. Very
consistent and plays his position with a lot of confidence. Has good
strength and used it to record a team-high five sacks, in addition to 36
tackles, a fumble recovery, two fumbles caused, one interception, and
four pass breakups.
Bruce Linton, DB, 5-11, 177, senior
Outstanding two-sport athlete who has all the necessary ingredients
for his position. Had a solid 1987 season and should have an even
better year. Had 44 tackles, two interceptions, and a team-leading 15
pass breakups last season. Also is one of the PC's top decathletes.
Paul Lonergan, TE, 6-5, 205, Junior
Has the best hands on the squad and makes the tough catches in a
crowd. Has improved his concentration and will be looked to on key
downs. He was one of six receivers with more than 20 receptions for
the club a year ago. Also has big play capabilities and made 24
catches last season for 217 yards and one touchdown.
Scott Long, OG, 6-0, 250, senior
Has been a role player throughout most of his first three seasons with
the club. Challenging for one of the starting guard spots and also
serves as the Huskies' long snapper on punts. Great work ethic and
has the experience to play a lot of downs this season.
Drew Lotsis, K, 5-7, 165, senior
Has been one of the backup kickers for the past two seasons and has
seen very limited action. Has shown good consistency on extra-point
attempts and has range in excess of 40 yards for field goal tries.
Mike Medina, RB, 5-11, 208, senior
Can play either position in the backfield and is the strongest back on
the squad. Decent speed and good hands make him a solid receiver.
Ran only 14 times for 56 yards a year ago after picking up 111 yards
on 31 carries as a sophomore. Should see plenty of playing time as
one of the club's top three returning backs.
13
l
I
Brian Murphy, DB, 5-9, 195, senior
Enjoyed a good spring workout session and made the most improvement of any of the members of the Huskies' defensive backfield
which should earn him some more playing time. Will definitely be
expected to be one of the top performers on the special teams. Had
nine tackles and a pass breakup last season.
Jeff Naugle, DB, 5-11, 175, sophomore
Needs to gain more experience in game situations. Is a good athlete
who reads situations extremely well and moves to the ball. Will see
action on one of the corners in relief of a pair of veteran starters.
Jim Noye, P, 5-9, 170, senior
Has developed into an excellent two-step punter. Kicked extremely
well in pressure situations a year ago and pinned the opposition
inside its own 20-yard line on numerous occasions. Averaged 32.6
yards per punt in 1987.
Steph Pettit, DE, 6-1, 210, senior
"' A three-year letterwinner who executes the stunt package very well
and is capable of providing the big play. Was a spot starter as a
sophomore but has been among the tackle leaders the last two seasons. Had 50 tackles in each of those years and in 1987 recovered
11 three fumbles and had four and one-half sacks.
Wade Pickett, LB, 5-11, 215, senior
One of the Huskies ' two returning starters at linebacker. Was the
club's leading tackler last season with 91 hits and is the leader of the
defense. Also had a fumble recovery and an interception. Expected
to have a great year after a strong spring. Very active and gets
involved in a large number of plays.
Bob Preston, OT, 6-3, 255, senior
The Huskies' most consistent player a year ago. Extremely versatile
and can play tackle, guard, or center. Will move this season to the
outside after spending time at both other positions last year. Is the
fastest of the offensive linemen.
..JI
Dave Pysher, OG, 6-2, 265, senior
Enjoyed a good year in 1987 after moving from defense. Worked
hard on his technique and pass blocking during the off-season and
made good strides. Should be one of the solid performers in a very
experienced offensive line. Has good strength and size.
14
Darryl Richards, DE, 6-4, 220, senior
Returns to the team after missing the past two seasons due to military
commitments. Came out of spring drills as the number three defensive
end. A good pass rusher who will see a lot of action especially in long
yardage situations.
Dave Robson, QB, 6-5, 205, freshman
Has the ingredients to be a very good quarterback. Lacks experience
but made strides in the spring. Throws the ball well and uses his
height to his advantage. Will probably spend the season as backup
and prepare to step into the starting role next season.
Ron Sahm, DB, 6-1, 195, senior
Can play any one of the positions in the defensive backfield. Leader
of the special teams and top performer for the unit. Very active and
involved. Made 30 tackles, recovered two fumbles and caused
another, broke up two pass plays and intercepted two passes, and
blocked an extra point as well as a punt.
Dan Shutt, DB, 6-0, 185, senior
Should be the starter at one of the two safety positions for the Huskies.
Had a good season in 1987 with 37 tackles and an interception at
strong safety. Has gained a vast amount of experience and has the
potential to be an all-conference performer in the defensive backfield.
Jon Smith, WR, 6-1, 185, senior
Emerged from spring drills as one of the club's top three wide receivers. Has good size for the position and makes the difficult catches in
a crowd. Decent speed and will definitely see more action than a year
ago. Adds to a fine group of receivers.
Jeff Sparks, WR, 6-1, 170,Junior
Could be a game-breaker for the Huskies this season. Outstanding
speed and great hands allow him to go deep or catch the ball in traffic.
Legitimate all-conference player who tied for second in the scoring
department on last year's team with seven touchdowns. Had 28
receptions for 431 yards, an average of 15.4 yards per catch.
Eric Speece, RB, 6-1, 205, senior
Earned a starting role in the backfield in the spring after seeing limited
action last year. He rushed 11 times for 70 yards in 1987. A very
strong runner who has good speed for a player his size. Also catches
the ball very well out of the backfield. Gained 585 yards and scored
three touchdowns in two years at Lock Haven.

Gene Straface, LB, 6-1, 230, senior
Had a fine season in his first year as a starter in 1987. Registered 77
tackles, which was second on the club, and recovered two fumbles, in
addition to recording two sacks and breaking up three pass plays. Is
the biggest of the inside players and should have a solid final season.
Paul Venesky, QB, 6-1, 190, senior
Was the Huskies' backup quarterback for the past two seasons.
Obtained a good knowledge of the system and showed strong
leadership skills in the spring. Has excellent speed and a strong arm.
Limited playing time has yielded 117 yards and three touchdowns on
11 completions in 31 attempts.
w
Delmas Woods, DB, 6-0, 205 senior
Was the Huskies' "nickel-back" last season in addition to being a
solid performer on the special teams. A good spring put him in
position to earn the starting nod at strong safety this fall. Had 20
tackles, a fumble recovery, and seven pass breakups a year ago.

Coaches' records not available prior to 1914 or for the 1918 season. The university did

16
~
.
The Huskies put together a pair of three-game winning streaks and registered an
8-3 mark, only the fifth club in Bloomsburg football history to win as many games in one
season. A pair of losses in the Pennsylvania Conference Eastern Division to West
Chester and Millersville, respectively, in addition to a season-opening defeat at Norfolk
State, were the only blerni~hes on the record, which marked the university's fourthconsecutive winning season. The Huskies finished the campaign as the nation's 14thranked team in the final NCAA Division II poll and placed third in the PC East for the
second-straight year. Seven players earned all-conference honors.
GAME ONE - September 5: Norfolk State 26, Bloomsburg 17
Three costly mistakes by the Huskies' special teams led to 16 points for the
homestanding Spartans as Bloomsburg dropped its season opener. Two bad snaps on
punt attempts led to a safety in the first period and set up a touchdown early in the final
quarter and a roughing the kicker penalty on a missed field goal, which gave Norfolk
State a second chance, which was successful . Jay DeDea and Leonard Bluitt scored on
runs of three and one yards, respectively, and Chris Mingrone added a 28-yard field goal
for the Huskies' points. DeDea threw for 142 yards, and Tom Martin was the club's
leading rusher with 46 yards on 16 carries. Tom Heavey led the defense with nine
tackles.
GAME TWO - September 12: Bloomsburg 24, Shippensburg 10
For the second week in a row, the Huskies played in rain but this time forced the
mistakes and took advantage to win their home opener and even their record at 1-1. The
Huskies built a 14-0 lead on DeDea's second scoring run in as many weeks and took
advantage of a fumble recovery by Todd Leitzel to set up Martin from one yard out. The
Red Raiders pulled to within a touchdown before halftime but a third quarter DeDea-toCurtis Still pass opened up the advantage again. The teams traded field goals for the final
count. DeDea tossed the ball for 157 yards and Martin had 64 on the ground to lead the
Huskies' attack. Wade Pickett had 12 tackles, and the defense recovered three fumbles.
GAME THREE - September 19: Bloomsburg 25 , Lock Haven 6
The Huskies jumped out to a lead again and used a solid defensive effort to shut
down the Lock Haven attack to pick up the season's second victory. On Bloomsburg's
second play from scrimmage in the game, Still pulled in a DeDea pass and ran 62 yards
for the score. On the next possession, it took four more plays but the result was the same
as Martin scored from one yard out. With just 10 seconds left in the first half Martin
caught a nine-yard scoring pass from DeDea and it was 19-0. Lock Haven cut the deficit
in the third period but Bluitt's 24-yard run late in the same quarter iced the win. DeDea
threw for 244 yards including five passes each to Still and Bluitt and the latter ran for 68
yards. Derrick Hill had two interceptions for the defense.
GAME FOUR - September 26: West Chester 39, Bloomsburg 14
The Huskies put together a long scoring drive on their first possession of the
afternoon with Martin scoring from two yards out to enjoy an early lead. But the visitors
scored three times before halftime to take a 17-7 lead into the lockerroom. A long
touchdown pass to open the third quarter put the visitors further ahead, and the closest the
Huskies could come after that was 10 points when DeDea hit Jeff Sparks with a 33-yard
17
scoring pass late in the third period. The Rams' defense pressured DeDea all afternoon
recording nine sacks and held the running game to just 39 yards. DeDea did manage to
throw for 210 yards including eight completions to Jeff Sparks. Bruce Linton had seven
tackles and a fumble recovery.
GAME FIVE - October 3: Bloomsburg 16, East Stroudsburg 3
For the fourth time in five games the contest was played on a muddy field in a
rainstorm. The passing attack was limited to 37 yards but Martin ran for 201 yards and
scored on a 56-yard jaunt late in the game to seal the win. The first half was scoreless
before John Rockmore hauled in a 10-yard pass from DeDea and after the Warriors got a
field goal. A safety on a bad snap from center by the home team gave the Huskies a 9-3
lead. Martin's run came with just over three minutes left in the contest to raise
Bloomsburg's record to 3-2 and even the Eastern Division mark at 1-1. Chris Gross had
a big day with 11 tackles up front, and Hill had two interceptions for the second time in
the last three games.
GAME SIX - October 10: Bloomsburg 14, Cheyney 0
The passing combination of DeDea to Sparks and a tough defense combined to
help the Huskies defeat the always-tough Wolves before a large Parents' Day crowd on a
beautiful afternoon. A fumble recovery by Duane Hettich on the Cheyney 26-yard line
set up the Huskies' first score on their second possession of the game. DeDea hit Sparks
on a touchdown pass on second down and it would turn out to be all Bloomsburg needed
in the game. However, on the next possession, the Huskies took over on their own eightyard line and on second down again DeDea found Sparks wide open behind the defense
and he raced 89 yards for the score. Five fumble recoveries, two by Hettich, and
Heavey's interception helped the Huskies' defense outshine a Cheyney defense that
entered the game as the nation's top-rated unit.
GAME SEVEN - October 17: Bloomsburg 28, Mansfield 17
Mansfield entered the contest as the nation's 20th-ranked team, and a shaky start
made the picture seem even dimmer as Bloomsburg had four turnovers in the first half
but managed to trail by just seven points. A 10-yard DeDea to Sparks touchdown toss in
the second quarter were the only points the visitors could muster. Ron Sahm's 52-yard
interception return for a score to open the third period got the Huskies even, and after a
Mansfield field goal, Still caught a short touchdown pass from DeDea to put
Bloomsburg on top for good. Bluitt added a three-yard scoring catch in the fourth
quarter to put the game on ice. Hettich, Heavey, Gene Straface, and Steph Pettit all
enjoyed good days defensively for the Huskies.
GAME EIGHT - October 24: Millersville 33, Bloomsburg 21
The Huskies cut a 24-point deficit to just six points midway through the fourth
quarter, but the comeback effort fell short as the Marauders ruined the Homecoming
celebration. Trailing 24-0 at halftime, The Huskies rallied as Martin and DeDea scored
and Sparks caught a short DeDea pass. DeDea threw for 300 yards in the contest but was
intercepted by the Marauders five times as Bloomsburg fell to 5-3 on the season and were
eliminated from the Eastern Division race. Martin had a fine day rushing for 84 yards
and catching 10 passes for another 108 yards. Hill had two fumble recoveries for the
Huskies, and nose guard Larry DeLuca was credited with 12 tackles.
18
GAME NINE - October 31: Bloomsburg 24, Slippery Rock23
The Huskies held off the homestanding Rockets for the second straight season.
Bloomsburg trailed 17-7 before a Bluitt touchdown reception from DeDea closed the gap
to three points at halftime. The other first half score was a 37-yard pass from DeDea to
Still. Mingrone tied the score with a 25-yard field goal early in the second half, and Eric
Speece scored on a six-yard reception to give the visitors a touchdown lead. The Rockets
scored with just over four minutes left in the game but Linton knocked down the twopoint conversion pass and preserved the lead and the victory. DeDea threw for 235 yards
and three touchdowns in the game, while Pickett had 11 tackles and an interception for
the defense.
GAME TEN - November 7: Bloomsburg 17, Kutztown 3
Pettit's recovery of a Golden Bear fumble on the first play from scrimmage set up
an early touchdown, and the Huskies scored all 17 points in the opening half in a sloppily
played contest. After the fumble recovery, DeDea found Rockmore on a 13-yard scoring
pass to get Bloomsburg on top. Great field position late in the first period led to the
second score. Starting at the Bears' 28-yard line, the Huskies used four plays again with
DeDea connecting with Still on a seven-yard touchdown toss to make it 14-0. Just
moments later, following a 31-yard punt return by Hill and a 23-yard run by Speece, the
Huskies' drive stalled and Mingrone came on to kick a 19-yard field goal to round out the
Bloomsburg scoring. Pettit led the way with nine tackles and the fumble recovery.
GAME ELEVEN - November 14: Bloomsburg 35, New Haven 18
DeDea and Martin ended their brilliant careers in style as the Huskies won a battle
of two top twenty teams. The Huskies' quarterback threw for 358 yards and four
touchdowns, while Martin carried the ball 20 times for 122 yards, and the duo got plenty
of help from their fellow seniors to end the season with the team's third- straight win.
Rockmore had seven catches for 115 yards, and Mingrone kicked two field goals, all
three extra points, and ran for a two-point conversion score. In total, Bloomsburg
accumulated 418 yards in offense, almost double the visiting Chargers. An early 14-0
lead built to 24-7 by intermission and, although the visitors closed to within 27-18
midway through the final quarter, the outcome was not in much doubt. DeDea's totals
made him the conference's all-time passing yardage and touchdown leader.

SPARTANS
1988 Norfolk State Outlook
Back-to-back losing seasons don't sit well with veteran head coach Willard Bailey, so
one can bet there will be a renewed effort at Norfolk State in 1988. A stable full of
quality running backs should keep the Spartans' Wing T offense in gear led by Adrian
Miles, who finished eighth in the conference in rushing and averaged 4.7 yards every
time he ran the ball. All-conference performer Robert Roberson leads a big, experienced
line in front of the backs and two quarterbacks, Maurice Lawrence, who was among
conference scoring leaders a year ago, and Jesse Chavis, could both see playing time. A
young line may be the only weakness on defense, but linebackers James Stallings and
Rodney Baylor could make up for the possible deficiency up front. The most experienced area is in the defensive backfield led by Larry Bryant and Ralph Mitchell.

RED RAIDERS
1988 Shippensburg Outlook
Coach Joe Bottiglieri has plenty of experience with 35 lettermen including 16 starters
returning. The best of the group is all-conference fullback Bob Plummer, who led the
team in rushing with 534 yards, scoring with eight touchdowns and receiving with 24
catches for another 262 yards. The team's offense should be under the direction of
sophomore Steve Muchowski, who completed 52 percent of his pass attempts in 1987 for
a total of 1,007 yards. Wide receiver Dean Styer, who averaged 21.3 yards per reception
last season, is the club's top deep threat. Defensive leaders will most likely be linebacker
Steve Gironda, who established a new school record a year ago with 81 solo tackles, and
all-conference free safety Sanford Gunn.

BALD EAGLES
1988 Lock Haven Outlook
Second-year head coach Tom Jones is counting heavily on sophomore quarterback
Rich Hunter to lead his Bald Eagles back to respectability and at least a .500 season in
1988. Hunter took over the starting job midway through last season and passed for 1,299
yards and six touchdowns. Wide receiver Jesse Cleare averaged better than 21 yards per
reception and is a threat to put points on the board in a hurry. To succeed, however, the
Bald Eagles must improve their rushing attack. Heading the defense will be inside
linebackers Rod Govern and James Bibbs. They were the club's top two tacklers a year
ago. Plenty of talent exists in the defensive backfield where veterans Guy Wade, Dave
Laudeman, and Bryon Comly all return.

GOLDEN BEARS
1988 Kutztown Outlook
A new era begins in Golden Bear football history as former Lehigh University
assistant Barry Fetterman replaces retired 14-year head coach George Baldwin. Quarterback Greg Buchman is back after a year's absence due to injury and should provide some
of the spark the Kutztown lacked a year ago. He passed for 1,778 yards and 15 touchdowns two seasons ago. Wide receiver Tony Santella and tight end Dave Cullen shared
the team lead in the receiving department with 18 catches apiece. However, those
numbers should increase with Buchman throwing the passes. All-conference center Jeff
Fulmer leads a veteran offensive line that should provide plenty of protection and open
holes for tailback Eric Werley and fullback Joe Svede. Linebacker Mark Smakulski, end
Erv Kelly, and comerback Ron Dabravalskie are the top veterans back on the defensive
side.

GOLDEN RAMS
1988 West Chester Outlook
The Golden Rams boast one of the top passing combinations in the country among
NCAA Division II schools in quarterback Al Niemela and wide receiver Bill Hess. The
pair has led coach Danny Hale's unit to two straight Pennsylvania Conference Eastern
Division titles. Niemela, who was one of the finalists for the Harlon Hill Trophy given to
the top player in Division Il, passed for 2,445 yards and 22 touchdowns last season. Hess
caught 44 of Niemela's passes for 949 yards and eight touchdowns. In addition, the
standout passed for two other scores and ran for another. Fullback Todd Madison, who
scored 12 touchdowns last year, is being counted on to ease the loss of 3,000-yard career
rusher Jason Sims. Tackle Jay Buchanon will lead the Rams' big offensive line. The
defense will revolve around tackle Mike Testa, who had 10 sacks in 1987, and free safety
Jerome Watts.

WARRIORS
1988 East Stroudsburg Outlook
The Warriors hope to pick up where they left off last season when they won their final
three games. The team boasts one of the conference's most exciting players in all-East
safety and kick return specialist Joe McLaughlin. He had seven returns of 45 or more
yards in 1987 including two for touchdowns. McLaughlin will lead a defense which also
returns inside linebacker Pat Brady, who is described by veteran head coach Denny
Douds as potentially one of his best players ever. Defensive end Eric Sampson and cornerback Dennis Segich are a pair of other top veterans on the defensive side. The team's
offense will depend on the performance of quarterback Tom Taylor, who saw action in
six games last year. His top targets will be wide receiver Ken Kopetchny and tight end
Chuck Comish. Tackle Darrell Tyburski leads the group up front providing the proteclion.

WOLVES
1988 Wolves' Outlook
The Wolves had plenty of bite on the defensive side of the football with the nation's
fourth-ranked unit a year ago but really struggled on offense averaging just 7 .5 points per
game. Coach Mike Costa's squad allowed 199.9 yards per game in total offensive
yardage to its 10 opponents but scored more than two touchdowns in a game only once
all season losing the last eight games. Huge sophomore Jim Williams, who was last
season's conference Eastern Division "Rookie of the Year" heads a defensive unit that
should be pretty strong once again. Other veterans on defense include tackle Brian Clark
and comerback Darren Sunkett. All-conference punter Julius Flynn will keep the
opponents pinned deep and will spend some time in the secondary. Andre Baylor, a
late-season starter at quarterback, should have gained some experience and could make
the Wolves better offensively. He has plenty of targets in receivers Brian Christian,
Antoine Price and Russell England.

MOUNTAINEERS
1988 Mansfield Outlook
The Mounties got off to one of their best starts ever last season winning four of their
first five games and appeared in the national rankings for the first time. The team will
depend heavily on the ann of quarterback Craig Jobes. Last year he threw for 1,882 and
13 touchdowns. Coach Tom Elsasser also has several people who can catch the ball
including all-conference selections John Wood, who has 84 career receptions, and Jim
Cosgrove, who had 35 catches for 553 yards in 1987. Last year's ECAC "Rookie of the
Year," Duane MacDonald, also returns in the receiving corps. The level of success could
depend on improving the running game, however, as the Mounties averaged just 67 yards
per game last year. Linebackers Riki Kimble and Randall Beasley, along with backs Joe
Zaparzynski, Pat Beckwith and, Troy Barbusca, give the club a lot of strength behind a
young line.

1988 Mlllersvllle Outlook
The Marauders have the most experience of any team in the Pennsylvania Conference
Eastern Division with 38 lettermen returning including 19 starters. All 11 starters on the

in a season last year with 47 catches for 692 yards. Quarterback Bret Stover threw for
1,118 yards and seven touchdowns last year, and tailback Steve Napier ran for 342 yards
in seven games. Center Tim Cunningham and tackle Hardy Stanley should be the leaders
up front providing the blocking. Also returning is all-conference kicker Luke Hadfield,
who scored 46 points last season. Defensively, linebacker John Petrus, who had a teamhigh 150 tackles and was named All-American honorable mention along with Smith,
tops a perennially tough uniL Defensive end Kyle Landis and nose guard Harry Strawser

INDIANS
1988 Indiana Outlook
Indiana is undoubtedly the team to beat in the Pennsylvania Conference after
appearing in the last three conference championship games and winning the title in 1986
and 1987. Indiana's offense will be under the direction of quarterback Jim Pehanick,
who threw for 2,375 yards and 19 touchdowns and ranked third in the nation in passing
efficiency in 1987. Wide receiver Bill Heyser caught 40 passes for 577 yards last season,
and he, along with tight end Paul Kovell, are both proven receivers. Top returnees from
the defensive unit, which was ranked eighth nationally a year ago, are linebacker Kevin
McMullan and comerback Darren Cottrill.

CHARGERS
1988 New Haven Outlook
The Chargers' program has been one of the East's finest the past two seasons posting
8-2 records in each of those years and appearing in the national rankings. Some changes
will occur as new head coach Mark Whipple takes over the program. Quarterback Mike
Horton holds several school records, including completions and attempts, and has passed
for 4,691 yards so far in his career. Some quality wide receivers like Charlie Griffin,
who caught 22 passes for 423 yards, and Bob Wietecha, who hauled in 21 passes for
another 249 yards, give Horton plenty at which to aim. Keith McCoy accounted for onethird of his team's rushing totals last year with 461 yards on 98 carries and will be
expected to carry the load again. The club's top three tacklers from last season have
graduated, but defensive end Keith Dudzinski, free safety Walt Oko, and tackle Tom
Collett combined for 110 tackles and give the Chargers some top-notch hitters.

The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (Pennsylvania Conference) is
comprised of 14 schools in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. This
new governing body took over from the Department of Education on July 1, 1983, and
the change was also reflected in the granting of university status to all member institutions formerly known as "state colleges." Dr. James H. McCormick is the chancellor of
the Pennsylvania SSHE.
The programs in the Pennsylvania Conference are under the leadership of a
Board of Directors, which consists of the 14 university presidents. The organization of
the conference, through its separate divisions of men• s and women• s athletics, is unique
because it enables both programs to develop independently while sharing common goals.
One of the largest conferences in the nation, the Pennsylvania Conference sponsors
championship competition in 10 sports for men and 10 for women as follows: Fall
Season - Men - cross country, football, soccer; Women - cross country, field hockey,
tennis, and volleyball. Winter Season - Men - basketball, swimming and diving, wrestling; Women - basketball, gymnastics, and swimming and diving. Spring Season - Men
- baseball, golf, tennis, track and field; Women - lacrosse, softball, and track and field.
All 14 schools are members of Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association
(NCAA). In individual sports, however, some schools have elected to compete in either
NCAA Divisions I or ill.
Athletes and teams have won numerous honors in national competition and
have helped the Pennsylvania Conference become one of the most respected "small
college" conferences in the nation.

Robert B. Redman Stadium is situated on the upper campus of Bloomsburg
University as part of the university's 103-acre athletic complex. Completed in February
1974, the new facility took the place of Athletic Park in downtown Bloomsburg as
"Home of the Huskies." The stadium, which overlooks the scenic Susquehanna Valley,
has seating for 5,000 spectators, although attendance at several events has exceeded that
total. The largest crowd to witness a football game in the facility totalled 7,483 at the
1985 Homecoming contest against Millersville.
The area is designed for expansion should such a project be needed and
contains large storage capabilities as well as a concession stand and restrooms. The
university's upper campus also contains the E.H. Nelson Fieldhouse, Danny Litwhiler
Field (baseball), and a huge field area which serves as home for the Huskies' soccer and
lacrosse teams along with multiple practice fields. Located inside the stadium confines is
an all-weather track used by BU's men's and women's track and field teams. A pressbox
with seating for more than 40 persons is situated on top of the west stands.
Originally, when planning began for the new stadium in 1963, the proposed site
was the area now occupied by 18 tennis courts on the lower campus; however, a
consultant's report recommended the upper campus development. The project finally got
underway in 1972 at a total cost of $725,000.
On Saturday, September 21, 1974, the first game was played in the stadium,
and dedication ceremonies were held naming the facility in honor of Redman.
A native of Sayre, Pa., and a graduate of its public schools, Coach Redman
graduated with honors in economics at Swarthmore College where he also participated in
four years of varsity football activities, served as captain during his senior year, and was
also a varsity performer with the baseball team. He earned his Master of Arts degree in
economics at Pennsylvania State University during his tenure at Bloomsburg State
College.
Redman had coached at Sayre High School and North High School in
Binghamton, N.Y., prior to serving as an officer in the United States Navy during World
War II. He left the service with the rank of lieutenant commander. He returned to his
coaching duties at North High School and remained there until his appointment at
Bloomsburg in 1947.
In addition to serving as head coach of two varsity teams, Redman also served
as dean of men and taught a full schedule of courses in economics.
During his five years at Bloomsburg, his teams won 38 games while losing
only four. His record included three Pennsylvania Conference championships and two
undefeated teams. He left Bloomsburg in September 1952 to become head football coach
at East Orange Senior High School, N.J. During the late 50s, he was appointed principal
of the senior high school, and his untimely death occured in 1960 shortly after he had
been elected superintendent of schools in East Orange, N.J.

~

Zaparzynski, Pat Beckwith and, Troy Barbusca, give the club a lot of strength behind a
young line.

MARAUDERS

The purpose of this guide is to provide members of the media with necessary information concerning Bloomsburg football. Members of the media are always welcome on the
Bloomsburg University campus. It would be appreciated if those who plan to cover any
of the Huskies• home or away contests would contact the sports information office so that
we can make every effort to accommodate your needs and requests.
