Appointment to
Education Transition Team Announced
I am very pleased to announce my appointment
by Governor-elect Ed Rendell to co-chair the Higher
Education Committee of his transition team. I will
be sharing the chair with Rhonda Cohen,
chairwoman of the Board of Governors of the
Community College of Philadelphia.
The appointment is a great honor, providing me
with the opportunity to communicate the University
wide mission Building Partnerships for Academic
Excellence and Civility, as I participate in shaping the
future of Higher Education for the Commonwealth.
Edinboro University
Winter 2002
Commencement
On behalf of Edinboro University of
Pennsylvania, I will confer degrees upon 479 new
Edinboro University graduates at the Winter 2002
Commencement ceremony on Saturday, December
14.
With a May graduating class of 623 students and
an August graduating class of 182 students, Edinboro
University will have granted a total of 1,284
associate, bachelor's and master's degrees in 2002.
Carrying the ceremonial mace and leading the
academic procession as Grand Marshal will be
Dr. Jeanne C. Faieta, chairperson of Edinboro
University's special education and school psychology
department. A member of the Edinboro faculty since
1989, Faieta has served on several committees and
organizations including the Pennsylvania Federation
of the Council for Exceptional Children, the Erie
County chapter of Americans with Disabilities, and
advisory board member of the Gertrude A. Barber
Center. She has participated in many international
professional conferences as a presenter including the
American Educational Research Association in San
Francisco and Toronto's Council for Exceptional
Children. Among her publications are "Pragmatic
Disorders and Behavior Disorders: Do They
Overlap?" and "Training Teachers to Supervise Their
Peers."
Receiving an honorary Doctor of Public Service
degree during the ceremony will be Edinboro
Alumnus Mike S. Zafirovski, president and chief
operating officer of Motorola, Inc. Prior to joining
Motorola, Zafirovski spent 24 years at General
Electric Company where he held a series of senior
positions with GE, including eight years as president
and CEO of four businesses. In 1996, Zafirovski was
promoted to president of GE Lighting for Europe,
Middle East and Africa and later to president of GE
Lighting, one of GE's ten businesses. He joined
Motorola in June 2002 to oversee the company's
wireless handset businesses, including cellular
phones, related software and consumer two-way
radios. Under his leadership. Motorola's handset
business has gained market share, returned to
profitability and introduced new products as well as a
new marketing campaign. Zafirovski serves on the
board of directors of Motorola, United Way of Lake
County and Children's Memorial Hospital in
Chicago.
The Winter Commencement ceremony will take
place in the University's McComb Fieldhouse at
1 p.m., Saturday, December 14.

Online Parking Survey
Please recall that I recently appointed and
charged a planning task force to review University
wide parking. That group is seeking your input.
Do you have an opinion about parking on
campus? Do you think the current campus parking
regulations are consistent with our commitment to
civility and fairness?
All students, faculty and staff are hereby invited
to visit the University's home page at
www.edinboro.edu from Monday, December 2,
through Friday, December 13, 2002, to complete the
online parking survey. All respondents will remain
anonymous. Only through the collaborative
participation of the campus community will the
parking study group be able to make
recommendations for the continuous improvement of
parking for all. The results of the campus-wide
survey will be shared with the campus community
via In Touch.
The NINE Priorities
As a result of recent Middle States re
accreditation self-study efforts, the University has
recently expanded from eight University-wide
priorities to nine in order to include a focus on
enhancing academic quality on campus. The nine
priorities appear below:
•
Increase enrollment to 8,000 students in the next
several years through enhanced enrollment and
retention strategies.
•
Enhance academic quality.
•
Enhance technology campus-wide.
•
Create a just community that is student-centered.
•
Enhance the Advancement arm of the institution.
•
Create a collaborative administrative team both
on and off campus.
•
Create an inclusive planning process that ties
budgeting to planning.
•
Increase diversity.
•
Enhance Graduate Studies.
These priorities continue to serve as the
foundation of our inclusive budget, planning, and
Continuous Improvement process. Unit five-year
plans and strategic initiatives should continue to
support these priorities. Updates regarding the
University's efforts to achieve these priorities, as well
as Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education
goals, appear on the Planning Office's web site
accessible from the home page via
www.edinboro.edu.
Improved Course and Program
Approval Cycle Times
During the 2001 academic year, a strategic study
group was convened to review the course/program
approval process. The team made recommendations
for improvement and, to date, many of them have
been implemented.
However, in order to determine if the team's
recommendations actually improved cycle time, the
data from the subsequent (2001-2002) academic year
were reviewed. The mean cycle time for a new
course approval improved from 279.37 calendar days
to 82.81 (with N=21 cases). Previously, the cycle
time for a course revision was 224.74 days but that
figure improved to 30.93 (with N=56 cases). This
improvement in cycle time is outstanding! We
expect cycle times will continue to improve as a
result of this effort; trend data will continue to be
collected to measure the impact of the
recommendations and to further refine the process to
its maximum efficiency.
Such examples of critical process improvement
underscore the importance of the University's
strategic planning model as the Edinboro Family
strives to remain flexible to the changing
demographics and needs of students.
Congratulations to all for successfully collaborating
on this important effort!
