1987

A CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON IN REVIEW
The return of only three starters from the national runnerup unit of the year
before had veteran coach Jan Hutchinson unsure of how her 1987 team would
perform. The Huskies quickly made believers out of themselves as well as the
coach as they got off to a tremendous start winning the first 18 games of the
campaign, defeating no less than 12 ranked teams in the process.
A pair of shutouts over Lycoming (4-0) and Marywood (3-0) got the young team
off on the right foot to open the season. The offense stayed in high gear in each
of the next two games as Bloomsburg downed Gettysburg (4-1) and East
Stroudsburg (4-0) on the road to set the stage for the Huskies' own invitational
which would include three other rated teams. A 3-0 win at the expense of St.
Lawrence preceded the Huskies' toughest regular-season win of the year, a 2-1
overtime decision over William Smith. That contest would be an indicator of things
to come as the two teams would square off in mid-November for the national
title. A 2-0 defeat of Drew in the final game of the weekend help vault the squad
into the number one spot in the NCAA Division Ill rankings, a position it would
not relinquish .
Five of the next six victories were against Pennsylvania Conference (PC)
opposition as the Huskies tried to establish themselves as the team to beat in
the playoffs and earn the home field advantage for the conference tournament.
Indiana [Pa.] (4-1), Shippensburg (2-0), Millersville (3-0). Kutztown (2-1) and
Mansfield (3-0) were added to the list along with non-conference foe Messiah
(1-0). A 3-0 win over Franklin & Marshall provided the 14th straight win before
a meeting between the 1986 national finalists occured as the Huskies traveled
to Salisbury State to face the Sea Gulls, 3-2 victors over Bloomsburg for the previous
season's national crown. The Huskies got revenge by dominating the home team
and scoring a 3-0 triumph.
In their next outing the Huskies scored a 2-0 win over Slippery Rock, one of
three victories over the Rockets during the season, and finished PC action with
seven wins and no losses. Wins over Ithaca (4-1) and Wilkes (5-0) upped the
unit's record to 18-0 prior to the only slip the team made all season long, a 2-1
defeat at the hands of Bucknell in the final game of the regular season.
The Huskies proved to be poor hosts for the PC Championships the following
week as they downed Shippensburg (2-0) and Slippery Rock (3-1), both for the
second time during the season, and won their third conference title in the last
five years. The victory assured the team the opportunity to seek another national
title, and the Huskies entered the national playoffs with a sparkling 20-1 mark.
The offense exploded in the Eastern Regional held at Slippery Rock as the Huskies
scored 12 goals in two games to crush both opponents. A 5-1 win over Ohio
Wesleyan opened the tournament and a familiar opponent would be in the way
of a seventh consecutive national semifinal appearance. For the third time during
the year, Slippery Rock would attempt to knock off the Huskies, this time on the
Rockets' own turf. However, a five-goal first half ended the home team's hopes
of an upset and lifted Bloomsburg to a 7-2 win and advanced the team to the
championship rounds in Geneva, N. Y. The seven goals were the most ever scored
by the Huskies in a national playoff contest.
Despite a sluggish performance in the semifinal game, the Huskies prevailed
2-0 over Southern Maine to set up a return match with William Smith. The contest proved as tough as the first meeting and a lone first half goal by the Huskies
stood up in a 1-0 victory to give the club a 24-1 record and another national championship trophy.
A look at the season statistics show that the outstanding record and national
title were no fluke. The underclassmen-dominated squad outscored its 25
opponents 72-11 and held huge margins in every other category including shots
on goal (835-216) and corners (277-121). A defense centered around a pair of
first-year goalies smothered opponent offenses to the tune of 16 shutout victories.

AN OUTSTANDING PROGRAM
Bloomsburg University field hockey is only in its 14th year of existence but
has already established itself as one of the nation's top teams in the sport. Four
national titles and 175 victories during that span puts the Huskies' program in
the position of one which is used as a model by other schools.
Field hockey established a firm base at Bloomsburg under the guidance of
current athletic director Mary Gardner. She served as the team's first coach in
1974 and led the unit to a record of 20-12-9 in four seasons prior to the arrival
of current head coach Jan Hutchinson . Gardner's teams made
appearances in two regional tournaments and set the stage for what has become
one of the university's top programs.
Under the direction of Hutchinson, the Huskies continued their success and
began to build a nationally-prominent program which has accounted for a record
of 155-29-14 in her 10 seasons in charge of the squad . Her clubs have never
experienced a losing campaign and have established every school standard, both
offensively and defensively.
The recently completed season proved to be one of the finest in the short life
span of the sport at Bloomsburg as a team dominated by underclassman
performers was expected to ''rebuild'' somewhat, yet established a school record
for victories with 24 wins in 25 outings and added another national title to an
already impressive collection. The 1987 unit won the school's second National
Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division Ill crown in four years and made
a seventh straight national semifinal showing. The Huskies also won their third
Pennsylvania Conference title in the last five seasons.
Prior to winning the national championship this season, Bloomsburg had finished
second in 1986 and third in 1985, after winning the first Division Ill championship in 1984. That season's club has the distinction of being the school's only
undefeated unit as the Huskies won all 19 games including the conference and
national titles.
The Huskies won the final Division II national championship in 1983 before a
reorganization by the NCAA forced the club to move into Division Ill. The Huskies
were 16-2-1 this year and avenged a loss to Lock Haven in the 1982 championship game by defeating the Bald Eagles in the national title contest, 1-0.
A sweep of six consecutive games helped the Huskies to the school's first
national championship capping the 1981 season. Three wins in the Eastern Regional
led to the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) championship round where the Huskies scored three more victories to claim the top honors.
That crown not only marked a first but a last as well as the AIAW was disbanded
and Bloomsburg, along with the other teams, joined the NCAA.
Despite its relatively short existence, Bloomsburg's field hockey program has
aged well and the 1987 performance should come as a shock to no one considering the past several seasons.

COACH JAN HUTCHINSON'S
THOUGHTS ON THE 1987 SEASON
An Excaptlonal Year Expected?
"We certainly didn't expect this degree of success because of the loss of eight
starters, including four All-Americans. We did have an exceptional recruiting year
and some very good players moving up form the junior varsity, however you can
never be sure just how well things will come together. This group jelled very well
as a team quickly and that was a main reason for the results we achieved ."
A Kay to tha 1987 Season?
" The fact that this group, did come together so well and made steady improvement throughout the season. This group played together better than any
team in my 10 years at Bloomsburg . We just got better and better as the season
progressed and when the playoffs came along we were right on schedule. We
definitely peaked at the right time of the year."
Turning Point In tha 1987 Season?
''The last weekend of September when we hosted three other nationally
ranked teams in our invitational and won all three games had to be one turning
point. After that the kids really started to believe in themselves and knew that
we could be competitive with anyone on the schedule. A second spot may have
been beating Salisbury State 3-0 and really dominating them. They had beaten
us in the national finals last year so a big win convinced us we had a great shot
at the national title ."
Reasons for a Succassful Program?
"One of the reasons, I believe, is our style of play. We like to play a controlled
passing game and maintain control as much as possible. We feel we can really
dominate a team by keeping the ball the majority of the time. A passing game
is tougher to perfect but once you get it going, its very hard to stop. Another
reason would be the comradery of our players and the fact that they keep the
game in the proper perspective. Winning is a goal but not the only goal. They
simply enjoy playing the game."

HEAD COACH JAN HUTCHINSON
In her 10 seasons as head field hockey coach at Bloomsburg University, Jan
Hutchinson has established a program that has brought the institution national
recognition.
Her teams have built a winning percentage of .818, while posting a record of
155-29-14 but more importantly have claimed four national championships in the
last seven years.
Most recently, the Huskies were crowned the 1987 NCAA Division Ill champion.
They have also won the nation's top honors in 1981 , 1983 and 1984. In addition,
the three seasons that the Huskies didn't wear a national crown they weren 't
far away finishing second twice and third on the other occasion.
In the past seven seasons the Huskies have been in a total of 12 championship
games, including six appearances in the Pennsylvania Conference (PC) championship contest. They have won three PC titles in the past five seasons.
Hutchinson has coached nine individuals to 17 All-American honors, including
seniors Cindy Daeche and Sharon Reilly this past season.
She also serves as head coach of the Huskies ' highly successful softball team
which has won five consecutive PC championships and made eight straight
appearances in the national playoffs. Her teams have accumulated a record of
253-69 on the field in 10 seasons under her direction. She has the rare distinction
of coaching two national championship teams in the same academic year as her
1982 softball squad duplicated the feat of her 1981 field hockey unit by winning
the AIAW Division Ill crown.
A native of Newton, N.J., she received her Bachelor of Science and Master
of Education degrees from East Stroudsburg.
From 1971-78, she was a member of the faculty at Blair Academy in Blairstown,
N.J. where she initiated the women's physical education and interscholastic sports
programs in addition to coaching field hockey, basketball and softball. During
her six seasons as field hockey coach, her teams compiled an overall record of
65-14-8.
Sharon O'Keefe has served as Hutchinson's assistant coach at Bloomsburg
for the past six seasons. She is also the Huskies' head lacrosse coach and graduated
from Trenton State in 1980.
Mrs. Hutchinson and her husband Tom, who serves as an assistant wrestling
coach at Lehigh University, reside in Allentown, Pa.
