CROSS
COUNTRY
1980
Men's Outlook
Youth will play a big part in this year's cross country season.
The squad is comprised of one senior, five juniors, three
sophomores, and eight freshmen. Steve Johnson is the only
one to graduate from last year's team.
Junior co-captain Tom Groff, who placed seventh in last
year's regional competition, leads the list of returnees set on
improving last year's 2-7 mark. Other top prospects back from
a year ago are juniors Dennis Raup and Randy Peters, along
with sophomores John and Bob Feeley and Bill Harte. The
other co-captain is junior Ken Latch, a fine distance
performer on BSC's track team, but in his first season with
the cross country program.
A very promising group of freshmen figure prominently in
first year head coach Carolyn Wernstedt's plans. They are:
John Homan, Cameron Smith, f'Jlike Wool, and Gary Andrews.
This group, in addition to the upperclassmen, should make
competition very keen for the top spots.
Once the large number of freshmen gain some experience
in the early part of the season, the Huskies will be looking
forward to regional and hopefully national events.
Wernstedt and her assistant, Stu Nagel, will be aiming to
re-establish BSC's cross country program to the form it
displayed in the early ?O's under Dr. Clyde Noble.
Cross country began at Bloomsburg in 1932 and went 18-7
over a period of eight years before stopping in the 1940-41
season. It was reinstated as a varsity sport again in 1964 and
since has posted a .518 winning percentage with a record of
73-68.

Head Coach

..
CAROLYN WERNSTEDT, is in her first year as
head coach of Bloomsburg's cross country
program. She joined the BSC Health, Physical
Education, and Athletics department in August
1979 and served as women's track and field
head coach and as an assistant field hockey
coach lasf year. •
After attending State College (PA) High
where she was a record holder in the long jump
and 100 and 200 dashes, Wernstedt received a
BS in Health and Physical Education at Penn
State in 1977. She lettered four years for the Nittany Lions while
competing in cross country, and indoors and outdoors in the 220, 440,
and 880.
She then coached a year in the State College School District before
returning to school to earn a master's degree in P.E. from Western
Illinois University in August 1979. At Western, Wernstedt was an
assistant cross country and track and field coach and the school was
state champs in both sports that year. The cross country team finished
10th in the nationals and a number of the girls competed at the
outdoor nationals.
Assistant Coach
STEWART NAGEL, is a member of BSC's Art
Department faculty entering his second
season as assistant cross country coach. A
good sub-masters runner, himself, makes him
an asset to the program.

Women's Outlook
Last season was the initial year for women's cross country at
Bloomsburg State College and only four girls competed on
the team that finished 12th in regional competition.
The four returning from last year's squad include
co-captains, senior Susie Hartman and junior Anne Grab
along with sophomores Carol May and Terri Purcell.
"The girls have returned in good shape and are very
enthusiastic," according to first year head coach Carolyn
Wernstedt.
The veterans will be heavily challenged by a very strong,
talented group of newcomers. Leading this group of first year
candidates is PIAA District 11 mile champion Vicki Amici
from Emmaus High School and Lori Pingitore from Reading.
Sophomore Lauren Meymaris will be making her debut in
cross country after a fine fourth place finish in the 5000
meters at last spring's Pennsylvania Conference track and
field champfonships.
Others vying for positions are: sophomores Mary Urban
and Jenny Roch, and freshmen Yvonne Delnis, Kathy
McNally, and Kelly Kessler.
Having 12 members on this year's team allows for a lot
of competition for the top spots and this should show
immediate improvement. The team will be trying to achieve
close grouping in their meets and the overall depth of the
squad should make this possible.
The team is anxious to start a full schedule which includes
four invitational competitions throughout the season. This
season will be tougher due to the fact that there is only one
event scheduled at home.
Stu Nagel will be assisting Wernstedt with the team, as
well as helping with the men.
