"A FRESH START"
"It will be an interesting year considering the team roster includes
twelve freshmen and only two returning varsity members," stated head
coach Eli McLaughlin, who is in his 23rd year in charge of the Huskies'
swimming and diving program.
Senior Rick Fenton has been appointed team captain and will
compete in the breaststroke and individual medley events. "His
experience and maturity will combine to give us the leadership needed
to develop our young team into a competitive unit," commented
McLaughlin. Sophomore Ike Franks, who made his presence known
throughout the conference a year ago as a tough backstroker, is the
other returning veteran and will continue in that event but will also see
action in many other races because of his versatility.
Leading the outstanding group of newcomers is Bob Stocks,
basically a distance freestyler, but has the ability to help in several
areas. "He is the best distance swimmer I've ever recruited and could be
a prime candidate for All-American honors," according to McLaughlin .
Rich Sheldon is another performer that McLaughlin has tabbed as
"Full of potential," he will compete in the sprint freestyle events while
Tyler Howell, who received All-State recognition last season, will join
Sheldon in the freestyle events as well as swimming the butterfly .
Ed McElhiney "has the ability to develop into a top collegiate
breaststroker'' and was a qualifier in the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke
races at last year's national YMCA meet. " I have high expectations for
'Mac' now and in our plans for the future," the coach commented .
A three-year qualifier in the PIAA High School distance freestyle,
Jerry Shantillo will assume those same duties for the Huskies . "Jerry
has a bright future ahead and we're glad to have him and look for big
things ."
Bill Mayer, who captured a conference championship in the
backstroke in high school, will continue in that event for BU as well as
entering the sprint freestyle races along with Mark Koenig, primarily a
butterflyer.
Marc DiNola, an individual medley, butterfly and freestyle performer, will add depth in those areas while Joe Daley will be in the
backstroke and breaststroke in addition to the freestyle .
Under the direction of diving coach Larry Miller, Dan Good is
developing his technique and will be counted on in both the one·and
three meter events.
The Huskies opened the 1984-85 campaign by hosting the Fourth
Annual BU Invitational Relays where they were dethroned as champions after capturing the event in its first three years. Bloomsburg
opened the dual meet slate with wins over King's and Susquehanna
before losing to Richmond and Indiana (PA) to even its mark as 2-2
entering the holiday break. "I am looking forward to the balance of our
schedule and our young team giving us another winning season ."
