Centralia Mine Fire Collection, 1860-2006
Donated in 2018 by Joan Quigley – Finding Aid created in 2020 by Angela Peiffer
Brief Summary
The Centralia mine fire began in 1962 when trash was burned near an opening to a coal
vein, igniting the coal. Initially, the town of Centralia attempted to combat the fire by using the
local fire department to blast water into the mine tunnel. When this was unsuccessful, the
Centralia Borough turned to the federal government for assistance funding projects to extinguish
the fire. Many attempts were made throughout the 1960s, 70s, and 80s to smother the fire by
tunneling perpendicular to the coal vein in an attempt to cut off the spread and by filling
boreholes with a slurry to douse the fire. Despite the numerous attempts, the fire continued to
spread along the coal vein, eventually stretching underneath the town of Centralia. In the 1980s,
carbon monoxide detectors were placed in homes and public buildings throughout the town to
monitor citizens’ exposure to the deadly chemicals released by the fire. The citizens of the town
banded together to form the Concerned Citizens Action Group and the Centralia Committee on
Human Development to petition the government for more assistance to save their town. When it
became clear that the fire would continue to spread and would jeopardize the citizens’ health
with noxious gasses and structurally compromised buildings and roads, the federal government
encouraged residents to relocate and purchased some residents’ homes. By the mid 1980s, the
vast majority of the town was abandoned. The fire continues to spread today, but having burned
up the majority of the coal beneath the town the fire now spreads further along the coal vein.
Scope and Content
This collection is derived of research materials about the Centralia mine fire gathered by
Joan Quigley for the writing of her monograph The Day the Earth Caved In: An American
Mining Tragedy. The collection contains documents pertaining to the history of mining,
background of the areas of Centralia Pennsylvania, correspondence and newspapers discussing
the mine fire, and other sources pertaining to the spread of the mine fire. Area background
includes a wide variety of documents that help to establish and understanding of the town of
Centralia and the surrounding area. The documents about the history of anthracite coal mining in
Pennsylvania date back to the early 1900s, describing the beginnings of mining in PA and the
working conditions in the mines. To get a better understanding of the history of mining, there is a
large number of documents describing the 1902 mine strike. In addition to the 1902 mine strike,
there is documentation about the Molly Maguires that specifically pertains to a murder in
Columbia county committed in the mid 1800s that was attributed to the group. Included in the
collection is also a small amount of information relating to the Quigley family, who were
Centralia miners, including their arrival to the United States and their lives in Pennsylvania.
Starting with the beginning of the mine fire in 1962, this collection possesses documentation
about the US federal government’s Bureau of Mines and Office of Surface Mining response and
actions, newspaper coverage of the fire, correspondence about the fire, and other sources
providing information about the fire. Documentation about the fire extends through 2006, prior
to the book’s publication in 2007.
