SWIMMING
AND
DIVING
What's Ahead
Five talented returning lettermen are the base on which
20th year head coach Eli McLaughlin must build his 1981-82
BSC men's swimming and diving team.
Team captain Phil Spampinato, who performs in the butterfly and backstroke freestyle races, leads the group of
veterans which includes sophomores Phil Christian, Tom
DiMarco, Carl Helstrom and Matt Thran. Christian will
specialize in the backstroke, Helstrom in the butterfly,
DiMarco in freestyle events, while Thran will compete in the
breaststroke along with the individual medley.
Newcomers John Connolly, John Murphy, and Jim
McFadden will add needed depth in the freestyle, Rick
Fenton and Dave Henwood will swim in the individual medley,
and junior Tom Baumann will join Thran in the breaststroke.
Sophomore Tom Grazioli will return to the squad with
experience in both one and three meter diving where he will
team with another sophomore, George Weatherstone.
The Huskies have a well-balanced schedule which will
include the 1st BSC Invitational Relays involving SUNY/
Binghamton, Lycoming, Hartwick, King's and Ursinus.
Pennsylvania Conference foes Clarion and Shippensburg, as
well as West Chester and Monmouth, appear to be the
biggest dual meet challenges on the slate.
BSC will be out to improve upon last year's 3-9 mark.
"Our plan is to strive for quality through hard work and take
each event one at a time," commented McLaughlin. "We're
looking forward to regaining some of the recognition we once
enjoyed on both the state and national level. I'm enthused
about this year's squad and the potential opportunities that
will be presented us," he added.

"About The Coach"
ELI McLAUGHLIN has been a
member of the Health and Physical Education Department for
the past 21 years and begins
his 20th season as the head
coach of the men's swimming
and diving team. McLaughlin
received both his B.S. and
M.Ed. degrees from West
Chester State College and has
done additional graduate work
in a Doctoral program at West
Virginia University.
He holds the rank of Associate Professor and also serves
as the Director of Aquatics. During his tenure McLaughlin
has served as varsity football line coach for three years
(1961-63), assistant baseball coach (1965), and head baseball
coach (1967).
Over the years he has built a highly respected varsity
program at the college. He recorded ten consecutive winning
seasons from 1965-66 through 1974-75. Although his last
three seasons have been below the .500 mark, McLaughlin
still has had some outstanding meets and qualified several
swimmers for national competition. Coming into this season,
his overall varsity record stands at 126-107-2. His 100th career
victory was achieved in January, 1975 when the Huskies
defeated Shippensburg.
Since 1971, McLaughlin has developed nine All-Americans
in 22 events and one National Champion in the 50 yard
freestyle. He qualified 31 swimmers and divers for 130 events
in National Competition from 1966 to 1980. In addition,
McLaughlin has hosted four Pennsylvania State College
Championships, produced 11 Pennsylvania State College
Champions in 32 events, placed his team in the top three for 9
consecutive years, and was voted "Coach of the Year, 1979".
In September, the NCAA awarded him with a plaque recognizing his 15 years as an active member of the organization.
He is married to the former Patricia Repash and they have
two daughters. Beth is a junior at Eastern College, St. Davids,
Pennsylvania and Jane is a junior currently studying at the
International Institute of Seville, Spain.
Assistant Coach
ALAN PARKER, a former outstanding diver for Methacton
High School, had performed
one year at West Virginia
University before transferring
to Bloomsburg where he will
coach the men and women
divers. Alan is easy going,
reliable, and has a good rapport
with the divers.
