A HUSKY VICTORY

SWIMMING
DIVING

G 1977-78

OUTLOOK FOR THE SEASON
Coach Eli McLaughlin is very optimistic and
enthusiastic about his 16th season as head coach
of the Husky tankmen.
"We have six AU-Americans back in action this
year," McLaughlin states. "Senior Stu Marvin,
Triple All-American, 50 free, 100 free, and a
member of the 400 medley relay team; senior
Keith Torok, 200-yard free; seniors Doug Thran
and Steve Price, and junior Wayne Richards, all in
the 400-yard medley relay; and senior Jim
Balchunas, 400-yard free relay, give us a fine
nucleus for this year," he commented.
"Sophomore Pete Dardaris is the only other
member with strong varsity experience returning
to the squad. Junior Dan Steel and sophomore
Mike Bower have had some intercollegiate
experience and will be vying for team positions.
The much needed balance and depth will be
provided from some outstanding freshmen
including Riek Foust, Jim Tait, Dale Thomas,
Jerry Martin, John Krick, Kirk Harpell, and Tom
Reilly."
The diving team will be much improved through
the experience gained by returning varsity divers
Scott Wiegand, Eric Slingerland, and Mark
Ogden. Freshman springboard prospect Tom
Cole should be an additional asset to the team.
Gymnastics coach Margie Schaeffer has been
assisting McLaughlin with the divers.
The Huskies have a very impressive schedule
and expect strong competition from Penn State
Univ., Temple, Indiana Univ., Bucknell Univ.,
Edinboro State, and East Stroudsburg State.
McLaughlin and his squad have established the
following goals for this season: a winning
season; establish eight or more new team
records; establish at least nine pool records; to
qualify al I members for our conference
championship; to close in on first place in the
conference; to qualify more individuals for
national competition; and to finish higher in the
nationals as a team.
Naturally, to achieve these goals it will require
each team member to sacrifice and dedicate
himself to our program, according to McLaughlin.
"I believe we can do it-we have the best team
ever to represent BSC so I look forward to a great
season!" he commented.

COACH ELI McLAUGHLIN
Eli Mclaughlin is in his
16th season as the head
coach of the Husky mermen.
Over the years he has
done an outstanding job
building a highly respected
varsity program at the
college. He recorded ten
consecutive winning campaigns
from
1965-66
through 1974-75. Although his last two seasons
have been below the .500 mark, McLaughlin still
had some outstanding meets and qualified a
number of swimmers for national competition.
Coming into this season, his record stands at
106-78-2. His 100th career victory was achieved in
January 1975 when the Huskies defeated
Shippensburg.
Since 1971 McLaughlin has developed eight
All-Americans. Included in this illustrious group
are: Dave Gibas, NAIA in 1971, 50 and 100-yard
freestyle; Stu Marvin, NCAA Division II in 1975,
triple honors, 50 and 100-yard freestyle and a
member of the 400-yard freestyle relay; other
members of the relay team that year were Rich
Kozicki, Keith Torok, and Jim Balchunas; Wayne
Richards, NCAA Division II in 1976, 200-yard
butterfly; Stu Marvin won triple honors again in
NCAA Division II in 1977 in the 50 and 100-yard
freestyle and as a member of the 400-yard medley
relay; other members of the medley relay gaining
single honors that year were Doug Thran,
breaststroke, Steve Price, backstroke, and Wayne
Richards, butterfly; Keith Torok, NCAA Division II
in 1977, 200-yard freestyle.
McLaughlin received both his Bachelor of
Science and Master of Education degrees from
West Chester State College and has taken
additional work towards his doctorate at West
Virginia University. He is an associate professor
in the Health and Physical Education Department
and is also the Director of Aquatics at the college.
McLaughlin served as varsity line coach for three
years (1961-63), assistant baseball coach (1965),
and head baseball coach (1967).
His background both as a swimming coach and
as an official has been quite extensive.
McLaughlin is married to the former Patricia
Repash and they have two daughters, Beth age
17, and Jane age 15. The McLaughlins reside at
Many Springs II, R.D. #2, Bloomsburg,
Pennsylvania.
