Freshman Bret Urbine leads the pack

BLOOMSBURG
STATE COLLEGE

1982-83
MEN'S
CROSS COUNTRY
TRACK & FIELD
1981-82 PC Champion Mike Gorczynski

The Program
For the first time in the school's history, the men's cross
country and track and field programs come under the direction
of a single head coach . Carl Hinkle, head man of the BSC track
and field team for the past six seasons, became the Huskies'
cross country head coach last fall. The appointment will allow
for a better continuity between the two sports. "We are trying to
make the step into an entire program concept as the cross
country people can now become an integral part of our track
and field squad in the spring," Hinkle stated. " In the recent past,
the athletes weren 't competing in both sports and the middle
distance and distance events in track were suffering. This will
allow me to work with several athletes on almost a year round
basis, which has to be a great asset for us," he added .
Both programs have enjoyed limited success by various
individuals over the past few seasons including Steve Eachus,
who gained All-American honors in the 5,000 and 10,000
meters as well as cross country, Dan Mccallum in the shot put,
Stan Kita in the javelin, high jumper Jeff Carruthers, and
current All-American hopeful, two-time Pennsylvania
Conference shot put champion , Mike Gorczynski.
Bloomsburg cross country has seen six head coaches in the
past nine years . With the appointment of a head coach for the
combined programs, it is hoped both individual sports will
benefit from the blend . Hinkle expects this philosophy to begin
to pay dividends this spring as many of his cross country
performers will compete in the corresponding events.
The "total program concept" should provide for a positive
change in both Bloomsburg cross country as well as track and
field in the future .

Head Coach
CARL HINKLE, Assistant Professor of
Physical Education, joined the BSC
faculty and coaching staff in September of 1971 . In addition to his teaching
assignments in the Health and Physical Education department, he is in his
seventh year as head track coach .
A native of Berwick, Pennsylvania,
Hinkle re-ceived his bachelor's degree
from Montana State University and the
master's degree from Ithaca (NY)
College. His coaching experience
involves two years in public schools and stints at Ithaca,
Cornell, and Cortland State before coming to Bloomsburg.
In his six years of coaching track and field at BSC, Hinkle
has coached four All-Americans. This year he has the
responsibility of coaching both the track and field and cross
country teams in order to get a better cohesiveness between
the two seasons.

Cross Country Wrap-up
Despite this past fall's 1-7 finish, first year coach Carl Hinkle
felt, "Our cross-country team improved with each race."
With many of its participants being newcomers, the young
team struggled through a tough PC schedule.
The harriers' lone victory was a 40-73 win over Allentown in
a tri-meet which included King's College .
"Experience is the most important thing for the runners, and
this fall we just didn't have it," said Hinkle.
The only upperclassmen on the team were seniors Lou
Maynard and Steve Ziegler along with juniors Mike Williams
and Darryl Atherholt.
The rest of the team was comprised of six freshmen and
inexperienced sophomore Mike Ostafy.
"Our young runners, most notably Mike Greene and Bret
Urbine, did a good job for us and should be great for our
future," said Hinkle.
Other freshmen Bob Lytle, John Lewis, and John
MacDevette , will all help to make next year's squad more
competitive.
The young harriers definitely have a solid background in
running. Both John Lewis and Rob Lytle won medals for their
800 meter performance in high school. Lewis was a PIAA 800
district medalist while Lytle was a District IV 800 meter champ.
Both performed well for their high school cross country teams.
"They just need a little maturity which comes with experience,"
says Hinkle.
Lytle, Lewis, and Ostafy will keep in shape by competing on
the track team this spring .
"Next year may not be our turn-around year," Hinkle said,
"but we 're getting there. I think the team has a great attitude
which can only be enhanced by the new combined cross
country-track program."
"Our current recruiting efforts will improve us in the long
run," stated Hinkle. "I also hope to guide most of the runners'
training by also coaching them in track ."

Rob Lytle leads relay race during indoor season

Track Outlook '83
"Optimistic" is the best way to describe the attitude of
seventh year head coach Carl Hinkle concerning this season 's
men 's track team. "We have quality people this year who have
transmitted tremendous enthusiasm and commitment to the
team," stated Hinkle.
A nucleus of four seniors will lead the team on its quest
towards to Pennsylvania Conference Championships . "With
the people we have and their hard work attitude, we can expect
a better PC performance than last year," said Hinkle.
The top performer on this year's squad is senior co-captain
Mike Gorczynski . He will be shooting for a school record third
straight PC title in the shot put and looks to have an excellent
chance at qualifying for the Division II national meet.
Senior Joe Miller is the other co-captain and will be
concentrating in the triple jump, long jump , and sprints.
Other seniors, Bob and John Feeley, are two consistent
performers who will help in the troubled distance and middle
distance areas.
In the field events, juniors Ed Lozo , Eric Feerrar and Frank
Horan are expected to show improvement and score points.
Lozo finished fourth in the javelin in last year's PC meet. Feerar
provided good efforts in the shot and javelin while Horan
concentrated on the discus.
Underclassmen expected to lead the pack in the sprint ing
events are Stan Smolensky and Marshal Evers. They will both
be competing in the relays while Evers will also handle some
hurdling duties.
Junior John Homan and sophomore Mike Ostafy will
support the Feeley brothers in the distance events.
Although he has many returnees, Coach Hinkle will be
" relying heavily on a lot of frosh hopefuls." Steve Harris and
Tim Cook are two young standouts who will be expected to
develop in the sprint events. Harris finished second in the 400
meter race at the Junior Olympic trials while Cook finished fifth
in the PIAA meet in the 300 meter intermediate hurdles. In the
hurdles, Cook will team with Wilbur Reid while John Lewis and
Rob Lytle, two other high school standouts, will compete in the
middle distances.
Newcomer Scott Heckert will provide depth for the Huskies
in the long and triple jumps.
"With all this fresh talent , I expect some records to fall this
spring ," said Hinkle.
