THE HUSKIESJ1989SPRING 01.YF~OOK
The Huskies will be seeking their 18th consecutive winning
season as the 1989 season gets underway in early March. The
1987-88 team racked up a 26-6 record including the Pennsylvania Conference championship and a lofty ninth-place ranking in
the NCAA Division II.
During the fall season, the team became one of the most
well traveled teams in Bloomsburg tennis history. The squad
played in a variety of events for six straight weekends. The road
stint included a return to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division I team and individual tourney after a
four-year absence. The unit fared well in the Bloomsburg
Invitational while dominating play in other events including the
Millersville and Swarthmore Invitationals and the Rollex Small
College Eastern Regional.
Senior captain Mark Billone won the "A" singles title at the
Swarthmore Invitational and finished the fall with a record of
16-5. Junior Lance Milner picked up some fine wins enroute to a
12-7 mark. Juniors Marc Lupinacci and Dave Gilbert posted 9-5
records, and Gilbert won the "C" singles in the Millersville
event. Sophomore Roly Lamy turned in a championship
performance in the "B" singles at Millersville while posting a 97 record.
In doubles competition, the team of Billone and Lamy
turned in an impressive 10-2 mark while Milner and Lupinacci
finished 6-2. Both doubles teams claimed victories in the
Millersville and Swarthmore event. Billone and Lamy also
reached the finals of the ECAC Division I Tournament.
Bloomsburg received its highest ranking in the school's
history as the club was rated seventh in the NCAA Division II
preseason rankings. Individuals receiving rankings were Mark
Billone-seventh, Lance Milner-15th, and Roly Lamy-34th. In
doubles, the team of Billone and Lamy are rated fifth, while
Milner and Lupinacci ate 11th.
The Huskies have one of their toughest schedules ever as
they have added meets with Division I opponents Princeton and
Maryland to a schedule that already includes 14 other Divsion I
opponents as well as Division II's top-rated team Hampton (Va.).
Burt Reese is entering his 21st
season at the helm of the Huskies. In his
previous 20 years, his teams have
compiled an enviable record of 297-128
for a .699 winning percentage. He is
currently the regional chairman for the
East Region of the NCAA Division II
Tennis Committee. He is also an active
member of the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Association.
In the Pennsylvania Conference, Reese has coached 60
singles and doubles champions and has won five PC "Coach of
the Year" awards. He has been selected "Coach of the Year" in
the Central Pennsylvania Tennis District, and in 1988, he was
the recipient of the NCAA Division II national "Coach of the
Year" award. In the Fall of 1988 he was inducted into the East
Stroudsburg "Hall of Fame." In 1983, he added another
credential to his long list of accomplishments when Dave
Superdock and Marty Coyne became Bloomsburg's first tennis
All-Americans.
Reese, a native of Taylor, Pa., earned both his Bachelor of
Science and Master of Education degrees at East Stroudsburg
State College where he co-captained the tennis and basketball
teams as a graduate assistant. He then joined the faculty at Old
Forge High School where he was an assistant football and
basketball coach. He moved on to Abington Heights High
School and served as athletic director and initiated and coached
varsity tennis to a 45-6 record before coming to Bloomsburg.
He has been ranked among the top 10 singles players in the
Middle States Tennis Association and was a member of the top
three doubles teams several times in the past.

they have added meets with Division I opponents Princeton and
Maryland to a schedule that already includes 14 other Divsion I
opponents as well as Division II's top-rated team Hampton (Va.).
