1988 Spring Outlook
The Huskies will be seeking their 17th consecutive winning season as the 1988 spring gets underway in early March.
The team has racked up some pretty impressive numbers
under veteran head coach Burt Reese and could have the best
ahead of it as Reese appears to have assembled one of his most
talented units yet.
About the only negative aspect that resulted from a torturous
fall schedule was the end to a fall dual match winning streak
that had reached 70 straight victories. Once again, Bloomsburg
competed against many of the East's top NCAA Division I
squads and the results indicate trouble for the Huskies' upcoming opponents on the spring slate. The unit finished with
an abbreviated dual match record of 3-1 and fared well in the
Bloomsburg and Navy invitationals, while dominating play
in other events including the Millersville Invitational and the
Rollex Small College Eastern Regional.
Junior captain Mark Billone won the title in the Rollex
tourney and earned a trip to the national championships as
one of eight representatives from throughout the country.
Several other individuals and the Huskies' doubles teams turned in fine efforts. Sophomores Matt Quigley and Dave Gilbert
were finalists in the Rollex regional and the teams of
Billone/Marc Lupinacci and Roly Lamy/Lance Milner picked up several key wins during the fall.
Billone had the most wins in singles action with a mark of
12-4 followed by Lamy at 11-3 and Milner was 11-4 along with
Lupinacci, who finished with a 10-3 record.
The Huskies will cap the 30-match spring schedule by seeking their seventh Pennsylvania Conference title in the last 10
seasons. In addition, the club which is rated 14th in the
NCAA's preseason Division II poll will be attempting to secure
the club's first team invitation to the national championships.
Bloomsburg has had individual representatives in the tour- •
nament in eight of the last 10 years.
Coach Burt Reese
Burt Reese is entering his 20th season at the
helm of the Huskies. In his previous 19 years,
his teams have compiled an enviable record
of 272-121 for a .692 winning percentage.
He is currently the regional chairman for the
East Region of the NCAA Division II Tennis
Committee. He is also an active member of the
Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Ass'ociation.
In the Pennsylvania Conference, Reese has
coached 54 singles and doubles champions
and has won five PC "Coach of the Year" awards. He has been selected
''Coach of the Year' ' in the Central Pennsylvania Tennis District, and this
year he was the recipient of the NCAA Division II national "Coach of the
Year" award. In 1983 he added another credential to his long list of
accomplishments when Dave Superdock and Marty Coyne became
Bloomsburg's first tennis All-Americans.
Reese, a native of Taylor, Pa., earned both his Bachelor of Science and
Master of Education degrees at East Stroudsburg State College where he
co-captained the tennis and basketball teams as a graduate assistant. Then
he joined the faculty at Old Forge High School, where he was an assistant
football and basketball coach. He moved on to Abington Heights High School
and served as athletic director and initiated and coached varsity tennis to
a 45-6 record before coming to Bloomsburg.
He has been ranked among the top ten singles players in the Middle States
Tennis Association and was a member of the top three doubles teams sereral
times in the past.
