BLOOMSBURG UNIVERSITY
TENNIS '83 • '84

"A Commitment To Excellence"
Bloomsburg University is a multi-purpose institution of higher
education serving the citizens of Pennsylvania as one of the 14
Commonwealth-owned Universities. With a commitment to provide a
quality, affordable education for all qualified students. Bloomsburg
combines the tradition of an institution founded in 1839 with modern
learning, living, and recreational programs and facilities.
Commonwealth funding provides 55 percent of Bloomsburg's annual
operating budget.
Undergraduate students may enroll in degree programs in 64 areas
of study in the arts and sciences, business, teacher education,
nursing, and health sciences. A program in engineering is offered in
conjunction with the Pennsylvania State University, and preparation
for post-baccalaureate study at professional schools is offered.
Unique educational opportunities are available through advanced
placement, study abroad, professional practicum, internships,
independent study and the Center for Academic Development
programs.
At the graduate level, the master's degree is offered in 25 areas of
study and there are 10 supervisory certification programs in the field
of teacher education.
Extended program offerings provide continuing, life-long learning
opportunities for people of all ages and educational interests
through non-degree courses, non-credit mini-courses, international
studies and exchanges, cooperative education, courses offered at
off-campus locations and by public service television, and credit for
work experience.
Enrollment for the Fall semester, 1982, totalled 6,240 students.
There were 4,879 full-time and 867 part-time undergraduates, and 105
full-time and 389 part-time graduate students. Instruction is provided
by a 350-member faculty.
The University's 173-acre campus overlooks the town of
Bloomsburg and the scenic Susquehanna Valley. Carver Hall, built in
1867, provides a contrast with the modern facilities that include
seven residence halls, a library, a 2000-seat auditorium, student
union, dining hall, gymnasium, administration building, four classroom buildings, athletic fields, and recreational areas on the lower
campus. An athletic complex and recreational area occupy the
school's 100-acre upper campus. In addition, the James H.
McCormick Center for Human Services is currently under
construction on the lower campus.
Located less than two miles from an Interstate 80 interchange,
and 22 miles from Interstate 81, Bloomsburg is within one hour's
driving time from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Hazleton , and
Williamsport, 1 ½ hours from Harrisburg, 2½ hours from
Philadelphia, and 3 hours from New York City. The community is 45
miles from the Avoca International Airport and is serviced by major
bus lines.
Bloomsburg has an enviable placement record. Of the 1,127 who
graduated in the 1981-82 academic year, 80% had meaningful
employment or were in graduate school one year later.
Active files of over 25,000 living alumni are kept by the college.
Graduates of BU have distinguished themselves in areas including
law, medicine (one is a Nobel Laureate), science, architecture,
education, industry and research.
The Bloomsburg University is fully accredited by the Middle
States Association of Colleges and Schools, the National Council
for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, and the Pennsylvania
State Board of Education.

Spring Outlook
While having their youngest team in history, the Huskies may also
field one of their most talented squads ever to perform at the school.
The lineup will most likely include at least two freshmen and several
sophomores. There are no seniors and just two juniors listed on the
11-man roster.
As was the case in the past several seasons when the team could
be considered "top heavy", such is not the case in 1983-84 as depth
will be BU's forte' and could be the best ever. During the fall season,
the Huskies posted a 5-0 mark extending their fall unbeaten string to
54 matches and also made three tournament appearances. Although
Bloomsburg did not place among the leaders in the events, the
young team showed the potential to be competitive with the many
strong teams on its spring slate. In its own invitational tourney,
Bloomsburg finished tied for sixth and following that, the Huskies
made their second appearance in the prestigious Navy tournament
where they finished eighth.
For the fourth straight year, Bloomsburg was the only NCAA
Division II school to receive an invitation to the ECAC's Fall Division
I Championships. The team tumbled to a 14th place finish in 1983
after finishing 10th in each of its first three visits to the event.
The schedule for the spring, although possibly not as strong as in
the past few seasons, will more than test the young team. The match
slate includes nine Division I opponents, as well as two perennially
strong Division II squads in Hampton Institute and Mercyhurst along
with the usual Pennsylvania Conference opposition.
Coach Burt Reese's unit will be out to achieve three major goals
as the season rolls around with the annual "southern swing" in midMarch. In addition to a "solid" dual match record, BU will be seeking
its sixth straight PC title and have one or more players earn an
invitation to the NCAA Division II Championships for the seventh
year in a row.

Coach Burt Reese
Burt Reese is entering his 16th
season at the helm of the
Huskies. In his previous 15
years, the team has compiled an
enviable record of 208-82 for a
.717 winning percentage.
He is currently the regional
chairman for the East Region
on NCAA Division II Tennis
Committee. He is also an active
member of the Intercollegiate
Tennis Coaches Association.
In the Pennsylvania Conference, Reese has coached 35 singles and doubles champions and
five of the last seven seasons has been chosen as the PC "Coach of
the Year." In 1981 , he was selected as the Central Pennsylvania
Tennis Association "Coach of the Year. " Last season he added
another credential to his long list of accomplishments when Dave
Superdock and Marty Coyne became Bloomsburg's first tennis AllAmericans.
Reese, a native of Taylor, PA, earned both his Bachelor of Science
and Master of Education degrees at East Stroudsburg State College
where he co-captained the tennis and basketball teams. While
working on his master's degree, he helped coach the tennis and
basketball teams as a graduate assistant. He then joined the faculty
at Old Forge High School , where he was an assistant football and
basketball coach. He moved on to Abington Heights High School
and served as athletic director and initiated and coached varsity
tennis to a 45-6 record before coming to Bloomsburg.

Middle States Tennis Association and was a member of the top three
