CAPTAINĀ· KEN GROVE
Pennsylvania Conference
Champions
1979 and 1980
A Glance At 1980-81
The fall season was another successful one for the Huskies as they
registered their seventh straight undefeated record. Dual match wins
over Lycoming, Lock Haven, Scranton, Upsala, Haverford, Bucknell,
and West Chester upped BSC's undefeated skien to 38 for the fall of
the year.
The defending ECAC Division II champs elected to compete in the
Division I tourney at Princeton this year and got a solid team
performance to finish tenth out of 19 teams. BSC was the only
Division II team represented in the competition and hopes to be
selected in next year's reduced 16 team field.
One of the strongest fields ever produced some great tennis in the
1980 BSC Invitational. Coach Burt Reese's netmen finished in a fifth
place tie with Cornell behind Navy, Penn State, Hampton Institute,
and Mercyhurst. Temple and Haverford rounded out the field.
Currently the team is practicing indoors and playing in a variety of
tournaments in the immediate area. By the time the spring rolls
around, the Huskies should be prepared for another strong schedule.
Newcomers George Washington and Columbia add to an already
tough spring dual match slate which will make it difficult to
duplicate last year's impressive 22-3 record; a second straight
Pennsylvania Conference championship, a fourth place finish in the
MSTA Collegiate rankings; and an eighth place showing at the NCAA
Division II tournament. But, with five of the top six returning the
Huskies should continue their winning ways competing against ten
Division I, eight Division II, anrl three Division Ill schools.
Coach Burt Reese
This will be the 13th spring
season for Burt Reese and it
should be another good one. He
has compiled a record of 149-58
for a 72% winning average
against some outstanding competition. The Huskies' boss was
selected as "Coach of the Year"
in the Pennsylvania Conference
the past two years as wel I as
1977.
Reese, a native of Taylor, PA,
earned both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Education
degrees at East Stroudsburg State College where he co-captained
the tennis and basketball teams. While working on his master's
degree, he helped coach the tennis and basketball teams as a
graduate assistant. He then joined the faculty at Old Forge High
School, where he was an assistant football and basketball coach. He
moved on to Abington Heights High School and served as athletic
director and initiated and coached varsity tennis to a 45-6 record
before coming to BSC.
During the summer he is a teaching professional and is active as a
player and official in the Middle States Tennis Association. This year
he holds down the #14 spot in the men's singles rankings and in the
past has been a member of one of the top three doubles teams
several times. As an official he is currently the chairman of the
selection committees for "High School Coach of the Year" in
Central Pennsylvania and "Club of the Year" in the entire MSTA.
Player Profiles By Coach Reese
MARTY COYNE
KEN GROVE
\
CRAIG DIEHL
BRETT BRISCOE
TIM BLANCHARD
Marty Coyne - Sophomore - Hazleton. Marty
worked hard on his game this summer and it
paid off in the fall as he moved into the #1 spot.
He won the #4 singles crown in the
Pennsylvania Conference and teamed with
Diehl to capture the #2 doubles title. Selftaught player, his game was improved by
nationally ranked senior Lorraine Sharp and
when the intensity is there, is very difficult to
beat. Fall record: 8-2; Major: Business
Education; Career record: 34-6.
Ken Grove - Senior - Spring Grove. Ken is
finishing up one of the top careers ever at
Bloomsburg. Has been exceptionally tough
over the years in tournament play. During three
conference championships, he has won five
titles (3 singles and 2 doubles). Last year was
one of two BSC players invited to the NCAA
Division II national tourney in St. Louis. If Ken
has the kind of spring he had a year ago, he will
be a "can't miss" for the 1981 national
tournament. Fall record: 8-2; Coached in high
school by Gary Gault; Major: Accounting;
Career record: 65-31.
Craig Diehl - Junior - Spring Grove. Has gotten
better every year. This past summer Craig
played well enough to earn himself a spot
among the top 25 in the Middle States Tennis
Association's men's rankings. He has now won
two singles and two doubles titles in the
Pennsylvania Conference and has a chance to
become the first player to sweep if he can keep
the streak alive this spring. Won the "B"
division consolation at the ECAC Division I
tourney. Also coached in high school by Gary
Gault. Fall record: 9-2; Major: Accounting;
Career record: 59-16.
Dave Superdock - Sophomore - Bloomsburg. Is
the most improved player on the team. Dave
has picked up a strong serve/volley game and
has lost the tentativeness he possessed last
year. He won a Pennsylvania Conference title
at #6 singles last year and is expected to do
the same at #4 this season. Doubles game has
vastly improved as he moves into the lineup as
Ken Grove's partner. High school coach was
Glen Spaid. Fall record: 7-2; Major: Pre-med;
Career record: 30-7.
Brett Briscoe - Freshman - Richbor0. New kid
on the block and is'a fine player and welcome
addition to the team. He has all the tools to be
very good and is currently ranked 17th in the
Boy's 18's in the MSTA with one more year to
go. Doubles games is very mature for a
freshman. Brett was coached in high school by
Russ Struble at Council Rock. Fall record: 7-3;
Major: General Studies; Career record: 7-3.
Tim Blanchard - Junior - Towanda. No high
school team to play on; he has worked very
hard in college to get to the level of play he is
at right now. Tim has a strong desire to win and
has pushed his way into the top six. Currently
he is teamed with Briscoe to form a strong #3
in doubles team. Fall record: 8-2; Major:
Management; Career record: 18-8.
STEVE BLECHSCHMIDT
JOHN PETRIELLO
DAVE WILLIAMS
CHUCK TIRENDI
JOE LESKO
JIM KRAUSE
Steve Blechschmidt - Junior - New Holland. Steve had a good spring
season a year ago playing at numbers five and six. A notoriously
slow starter, by this spring he should make a move toward the top
six. He is the only player to ever go unbeaten on our southern trip.
Major: Computer Science; Career record : 15-3.
Dave Williams - Senior - Dallas. Dave has become a better player
each year. If someone falters in the top six, look for him to move into
the lineup. He is a very steady player who is difficult to beat. Major:
Accounting.
Chuck Tirendi - Senior - Philadelphia. Good player who may still
become a top six competitor. He can definitely compete at that level,
but academic commitments have slowed his tennis progress down.
Major: Pre-med.
John Petriello - Senior - Scranton. First year on the team ; too bad he
is a senior because he has made tremendous advances in his game.
John's best tennis years are still ahead of him . Major: Accounting.
Joe Lesko - Sophomore - Center Valley. Good player who won a
District II doubles title in high school. Probably still one year away
from being a strong factor in top six competition . High school coach
was Tom Nonnemacher. Major: Management.
Jim Krause - Junior - Newtown. Former all-conference player in the
community college league. Jim is a good player and fine person that
gives the team the depth it needs to be successful. Major: Special
Education.
