MEN'S
TENNIS

NO. 1 PLAYER - ROB VANCE

ECACTEAM
CHAMPIONS

I980 OUTLOOK
The Husky tennis team went 7-0 for their sixth straight
unbeaten fall season. This brings their overall fall record to
31-0 during that period of time. While playing seven matches
(West Chester, Bucknell, California State, Lock Haven, Upsala,
Haverford and Scranton), the team lost only one point out of
a total of 63 points, registering six shutouts.
In the ECAC Division 11 tournament, Bloomsburg finished
first out of 37 East coast schools and had individual winners
in Craig Diehl at No. 2 singles and Ken Grove and Marty
Coyne at No. 1 doubles. The Huskies previously won the title
in 1974.
At the powerful BSC Invitational, Coach Burt Reese's netmen finished sixth behind Hampton Institute, Penn State,
Navy, Swarthmore and Temple. The tourney, started five
years ago, has become one of the premier fall events in the
northeast .
With everyone returning for the spring season, plus a transfer from Maryland becoming eligible, the Huskies should be
able to maintain their No. 7 position in the Middle States
Collegiate rankings.
Newcomers to the BSC schedule this year are Cornell,
Bucknell and Albany State.

COACH BURT REESE
Entering his 12th season as
coach of the Huskies, COACH
BU RT REESE expects another
good year. He has compiled a
127-55 record for a 70% winning
average. In 1977 and 1979 he was
named Pennsylvania Conference
"Coach of the Year".
A native of Taylor, Pa., Reese
earned both his Bachelor of
Science and Master of Education
degrees at East Stroudsburg State College where he co-captained the tennis and basketball teams. While working on his
master's degree, he helped coach the tennis and basketball
teams as a graduate assistant. He then joined the faculty of
Old Forge High School, becoming an assistant coach in both
basketball and football. He served as athletic director at
Abington Heights High School where he initiated and coached
varsity tennis to a 45-6 record. He was also in charge of junior
high basketball.
Reese, who is a teaching professional in the summer, is active in the Middle States as a player and official. As a player,
he normally has a men's singles ranking every year and has
been ranked in the top ten in the M.S.T.A. and has been in
the top three doubles teams for several years.
The popular coach is the chairman of the tennis committee
for the ECAC Division 11 and 111, which is the largest conference in the country, and is Chairman of the tennis committee of the Pennsylvania Conference.
Reese has also served as assistant basketball coach since
his arrival on campus in 1969.
