ALLABOUTTHENETMEN
PHIL CHRISTMAN - Senior, Bloomsburg, Pa.; number three player two
years ago, number two player last year,
and who knows this year. Phil has
been working this winter with a weight
and endurance program and it should
pay dividends in the spring. Over the
past two years, he has had a 40-13 record and this spring will certainly not have a detrimental effect on it. Last year he was the Pennsylvania Conference champion at the number two singles position
and this fall the runner-up in the number two singles at
the ECAC's.
Major: Psychology - good chance of graduate school
- made Who's Who in American Colleges.
Assets: Good, solid all-around game - works hard on
his game without anyone pushing him.
DREW HOSTETTER - Senior, Mt. Joy,
Pa. This is the final year for the best
player ever to play at Bloomsburg. He
has been the number one player the
past three years and established an enviable record. During this time, he has
an overall record of 61-14. He played
his high school tennis for Bill Loercher
at Donegal H .S. and reached the semi-finals of the
state tournament. He is currently ranked 20th in the
MSTA men's singles. One thing left to do - win the
Pennsylvania Conference title.
Major: Business Administration (Accounting) - outstanding student. He has signed with Price,
Waterhouse for the coming year.
Assets: Good ground strokes, mentally tough. It has
all been said before - he's a player.
JIM OVERBAUGH - Senior, Hanover,
MIKE LENZ - Freshman, Drexel Hill,
Pa. Mike has a limited college career
consisting of only the fall season.
Prior to that time, he was ranked in the
low 40's in the MSTA 18's. He also won
the high school league in which he
played. Fine potential, he is very capable of breaking into the "top six" this
Pa. He is winding up a four-year career
which has shown a 44-19 record. Jim
reached the number four finals two
years ago in the state tourney and it
appears that he is ready to play at that
level again. He reached the semi's of
flight number three in our own tourney
this fall. If Jim is going to win a Pennsylvania Conference title, it must be now.
Major: General Business
Assets: Good overhead, very quick, backhand improving.
spring.
Major: Biological Science
Assets: Good second serve, fine net game.
BILL LANTZ - Sophomore, Harrisburg,
Pa. Big hitter when he puts it together,
very tough to beat. Another player who
could easily crack the top six. Currently ranked fifth in the Central Pennsylvania Juniors.
Major: Communication Disorders.
Assets: Strong serve, solid basic
game.
MIKE PICHOLA - Junior, Williamsport,
Pa. He has compiled a 27-12 record
here at BSC. When he is playing well,
he is tough to beat. Mike has had several good wins over fine college players in summertime tournaments, and
this must carry over to the spring season.
Major: General Business
Assets: Strong forehand, improving overhead, tough
serve.
JIM HOLLISTER - Sophomore, Bloomsburg, Pa.; number five player last year
- will play higher this year. This past
season he moved up a level in play.
He has a 20-8 record for his collegiate
career and is ranked 21st in the MSTA
men's singles after a successful summer in which he won the Mansfield
Open Tourney. He has also reached the semi's of the
ECAC doubles and won the number three doubles title
of the Pennsylvania Conference.
Major: Liberal Arts
Assets: Devastating forehand, good overhead, and a
much-improved backhand and net game.
BOB ROSICS - Senior, Binghamton,
New York; number four player last
year, moved up a notch this fall and
was very successful. Big things are expected this spring from Bob. He has
been playing very well this winter. His
record is 21-6. Last summer he won the
Bucknell Open. He has been slowing
his game down and thinking through each point making him a much tougher match player.
Major: Sociology
Assets: Much more consistent game, not always
going for the "big" shot. Good physical condition.
TENNIS OUTLOOK
1976
After last year's disappointing 6-4 season, at this
point it is difficult to determine whether or not there
will be a marked improvement in this season's team.
Perhaps the toughest schedule in the history of the
school makes the situation even harder to assess. The
schedule includes Penn State, Temple, Haverford, and
conference powers West Chester and East Stroudsburg.
Although the team has lost only one player through
graduation, Tom Sweitzer is a tremendous loss. He
won many "big ones" for the Huskies and will be sorely
missed .
For the first time, the team will be going south to
play and this should enable the Huskies to get ready
for the regular season. The team will be playing a total
of five exhibition matches in this competition.
This past fall
matches, getting
nell, Lehigh, and
finished third out
at Rider and third
the team went undefeated in dual
by Mercyhurst, West Chester, BuckMansfield. In tournament play, they
of 39 teams at the ECAC tournament
in the Bloomsburg State Invitational.
With seniors Drew Hostetter, Phil Christman, Bob
Rosics, and Jim Overbaugh, it is a veteran team with
something to prove. It has yet to win the Pennsylvania
Conference title and that must be the number one goal
of every player. Anything less than that must be considered a disappointment.
