TENNIS OUTLOOK 1968
Three veterans, Bob Zalonis, Jeff Miller, and
Ed Dietrich returned from last year's squad
which posted a 7-5 season, the first winning season in many years at Bloomsburg State College.
Whether these three players will carry enough
punch to offset the inexperience of the remainder of the squad is a question mark.
Zalonis has real potential and should continue
to show steady improvement. Mil1er, who showed signs of great playing ability last year, could
be the key to another winning season.
More
consistency in the offense of Ed Dietrich could
also make a big difference. Lost through graduation from last year's team are: Frank Rishel,
the number one player for the last two years,
and Bill Gering, a steady Southpaw performer.
Another bright prospective, Ron Dietrich, transferred to Villanova University.
Two other returnees from last year who could
improve vastly as the season progresses are iuniors Dale Houck and Gerald Fulmer. The outstanding sophomore prospects are Art Worley,
who could move into one of the top three spots,
and Tom Clewell, another solid slammer.
Many of the team members started weeks ago
by working out against a backboard in the gym.
As the new tennis facilities will not be available
at the college until another year or two, the team
will again use the facilities of the Bloomsburg
Tennis Club and the courts of the Town of
Bloomsburg.
Following early sessions with the team, Coach
Herbert stated, "There seems to be an air of
confidence and eagerness which could lead to a
better than average season."

HEAD TENNIS COACH
DR. MICHAEL HERBERT
When Dr. Herbert joined the faculty of B. S.
C. in 1963, he immediately became one of the
staunch rooters for the Maroon and Gold. Over
the past five years he has been vitally interested
in the overall program of the nine varsity sports.
Two years ago when Earl Voss became head
basketball coach, "Mike" became his right hand
man as far as taking motion pictures of games,
supervising photographs of the team, and scouting for the team. Through his keen observation
and basketball sense, he soon became a radio
guest commentator on B. S. C. games.
His
fine knowledge of camera work has resulted in
some excellent films including both motion and
still shots.
Last Fall Dr. Herbert was appointed head
cross country coach and working with a limited
squad did a very commendable job. In taking
over the nucleus of the good tennis team of last
year, Mike, applying his coaching precision,
should produce a better than average team. Dr.
Herbert is well known in local tennis circles as
an amateur player.
In his teaching assignment at Bloomsburg
State College, the University of Maryland, and
Lehigh University graduate is a Professor of Biology. He was formerly a member of the faculty
of the University of Massachusetts and John
Hopkins University. He holds professional affiliations in a number of prominent science associations.
