TENNIS OUTLOOK 1965
With six veterans returning from last year's
inexperienced squad, Coach Norton hopes to
better ]ast year's dismal record of no victories
agajnst 8 losses.
Returning are Frank Rishel, Bill Gering,
Chuck Wi]son, Tom Evans, Milton Van Winkle,
and Mike Me1linger. Lost through graduation
were Bill Henrie and Charles Klohe, both of
whom had competitive tennis experience and
were steady players.
Frank Rishel improved a great deal during
last season and early indications point to his
being one of the top Husky performers. Another player, southpaw Bill Gering, worked extrem 2ly hard in his game last summer and fall.
Hjs last year's competitive performance showed
evidence of additional strategy needed in his
over-all play. Chuck \Vilson, a game competitor,
has been working on his service which could
improve his game 50%. Evans, Van Winkle, and
Mellinger also have put many hours work on
develop~ng more consistency in their offense.
Many of these boys started the season early,
working out in the gym until they could get outof-doors. Coach Norton stated that there seemed to be a new air of confidence and eagerness
among the team, a spirit that was missing last
year. As in other sports at BSC this year, freshmen are not eligible for varsity competition.
There are several other promising underclass
candidates for tennis along with some freshmen,
all of which points to "better things to come" on
the BSC courts.
HEAD TENNIS COACH
ROBERT NORTON
Bob Norton, who just completed his second
year as Head Basketball Coach at Bloomsburg
State College, is starting his second season at
the helm of the Tennis Team. Bob is respected
for his knowledge of both tennis and basketball
and his ability to impart that invaluable knowledge to others.
A graduate of Slippery Rock State College
in 1953, Bob, a Physical Education Major, played varsitv basetball and tennis. In his senior
year he \vas elected captain of his basketball
team which only suffered three defeats. He received his Master of Science degree at the University of Pittsburgh in 1959.
A native of Donora, Pennsylvania, where
he starred on the high school basketball team,
Norton, after graduating from Slippery Rock
spent two years in the U. S. Army. Followin~
his discharge, he began his teaching and coaching career at Karns City High School in Wes tern
Pennsylvania. For two years prior to ioinin'!
the BSC faculty, he served as head basketball
coach at Fort Couch School in Upper St. Clair.
During the summer months, in addition to
being a staff member of the Sunny Brook Basketball Camp, Danville, Pennsylvania, Norton,
an outstanding tennis player, is a member of the
Bloomsburg Tennis Club which is extremely
