Outlook

BASEBALL

Approximately 46 candidates reported for early indoor
practice a number of weeks ago. Thirteen ball players were
lost from last year's squad due to graduation, signing of
professional contracts, injuries, and other reasons.

Coach Clark

Boler

Rodrick Clark Boler joined the Health and Physical
Education Department at BSC in September, 1968.
A native of Northport, Alabama, Boler received his
B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Alabama
where he was a member of the 1961 National Championship Football Team and was a pitcher on the baseball team.
Three years prior to coming to Bloomsburg he served
as head baseball coach, assistant basketball ~oach, and
assistant football coach at Gadsden High School in Alabama. While at Gadsden, his baseball record was 26 wins
against 16 losses. In 1967 and 1968 his team won the
Northeast Alabama Conference title, and in 1968, his team
also won the Etowah County championships. In the past
two years, his BSC teams have won 17, lost 12, and tied 1.

The Huskies will be led by captain Tom Fleeger and
co-captains Joe Accardi and Chris Perry, along with nine
other lettermen. A staff of five returning pitchers include
Bob Warner, Greg Stahora, Chris Perry, John Lepley, and
Phil Jordan. First year pitching hopefuls are Gary Beatty,
Phil Levine, John Fureman, Gary Eckenrode, John Heimbach, J eh Bachman, and Torn Vottero. The only returning
catcher is Tom Storer, who will be pushed hard by Paul
Skrimcovsky, Jim Zanzinger, and Dick Bower.

Assistant Coach Steve Bresett

The lone returnee at first base is Fleeger, and freshman
Glenn Haas hopes to give him plenty of competition.
Prospects for second base, along with returnees Bob Parry
and Jeff Mosser, is Dave Nyce. Veteran shortshop Joe
Accardi heads another candidate, Lester Gilbert. Third
base is up for grabs among candidates Bob Herring, Mike
Dougherty, and Bob Lavelle. Veteran outfielders are Mike
Costanzo, and Steve Rudy; while Mike Devereux, Gary
Hammer, Bob Dodge, Curt Muschock, Steve Andrejack,
and Doug Heimbach are all first year hopefuls.

Dr. Bresett joined the Health and Physical Education
faculty at BSC in 1969, and is serving his second year as
an assistant baseball coach.
He received his early education in New Jersey, his
B.S. and D.P.E. degrees from Springfield College and his
M.E. degree from Rutgers University.
'
Prior to his present assignment, he taught in New
Jersey public schools serving in the various capacities of
teacher, coach, department chairman, and athletic director.
He also assisted in coaching football while he was a doctoral-teaching fellow at Springfield. His baseball knowledge
has been valuable to Boler particularly in helping the
younger members of the team.

Coach Clark Boler indicates that the Huskies will need
some outstanding pitching along with a respectable defense
to come up with another winning season. Last year BSC
had a 11-9 record.

TRACK
Outlook
One of the most successful indoor track seasons in
recent years at BSC should furnish the Huskies with the
necessary early conditioning and competitive spirit to
provide a better than average season. Bloomsburg chalked
up an undefeated indoor season of four victories and in
the process broke twelve indoor records and tied three
more.
Outside of the loss of sprinters Greg Berger and John
Lucysyn, and high jumper Mark Y anchek through graduation, last year's team (8-1 record, 2nd in Penna. Conference Championships) is basically in tact for this year's
competition. Heading the varsity returnees are Rick Eckert
-200 yard dash PC champion and Steve Ryznar-triple
jump PC champion both in 1969 and 1970. Last year's tricaptains James Cavallero, javelin, Robert Lacock, high
jumper, and sprinter Jim Davis, BSC's outstanding underclassman award winner, will provide keen leadership which
is always necessary for a winning team.
Other valuable performers are Andy Kusma, who
participates in the triple jump and is a team record holder
in the 120 yard hurdles (2nd in PC last year); John Ficek,
BSC shot put record holder; fine distance runners Terry
Lee (mile), Tim Waechter (2, 3, & 6 miles); and Larry
Strohl, 880 yard record holder who finished third in the
PC last year.
Joining the above strong nucleus are hurdlers-Charles
Graham, Andy Kropelak, and John Reeves; sprintersJohn Boyer and Rick Geise; pole vaulters-Rich Brand,
Randy Yocum, and Dale Muchler; discus thrower--Jor

Courter; javlin throwers-Gary Melhorn and Curt Zurn;
long jumpers-Hank Plumly and Mark Constable; high
jumpers-Kent Prizer and Gary Beers; distance runnerLarry Horwitz; along with Bruce Bittner, a fine quarter
miler, and Bob Herb, 440 yard intermediate hurdler.
Coach Ron Puhl is extremely proud of this year's
squad, all of whom display great enthusiasm and determination. Until the new athletic complex on the upper
campus is completed, Bloomsburg will continue to use the
facilities of the nearby Central Columbia Area High School
for its home track and field events.

Coach Ronald Puhl
Ronald Puhl joined the Bloomsburg State College
faculty and coaching staff in September of 1966. In addition to his teaching assignments in health and physical
education, he also serves as head track coach and was
named head football coach in January of this year. His
track team record last season was 8-1.
A native of Pottstown, Pennsylvania, Puhl was a three
letter winner in football, swimming, and field and track
while at Lock Haven State College from 1957 to 1961. He
began his coaching career at the Phoenixville Area Senior
High School where he served as varsity track and field
coach for four years, assisting wrestling coach for one year.
head gymnastics coach for three years, and varsity backfield coach for several years. He was named to the N .A.I.A.
"Little All-American Team" in 1960 for football and was a
Pennsylvania State College Champion in the 220-yard low
hurdles in 1961.
Puhl is an excellent conditioner of men and has the
ability to bring out in his team members a great desire
to win.

' GOLF
Outlook .
Losing three outstanding golfers through graduation
leaves a question mark at this point as to whether the
Huskies can top last year's 9-4-2- mark. However, a strong
nucleus of returning vetreans including seniors Ed Masich
and Jeff Hock and sophomore Rick J urbala, . all _of whom
play their summer golf at the nearby Berwick Golf Club,
plus junior Steve N eumyer, Harrisburg Area golfer, gives
Coach Jack Jones a far from dim outlook for the season.
Masich, who was a varsity member two years ago but
did not participate last year; is a two-time club champion
at Berwick arid along with Hock and Jurbala has had
much tc urnament experience.
Two other players who performed in a fall quadrangular meet for Bloomsburg are senior Scott Hefflefinger
and sophomore Tom Fudge. Other returning candidates
include Bruce Leauby, Al Bigelow, Terry Maher, all of
whom seem _to have improved over last year.
The above group will be joined by a crop of six freshmen, Bernie McHugh, Bill Hunchar, Ernie English, Lanny
Dietterick, Tom LaTourneau, Jeff Schwartz, and Keith
Boyd.
If Coach Jones can get his squad in playing shape
early enough, Bloomsburg should be in contention for a
strong finish in the Pennsylvania Conference tournament
in May. The Huskies will again use the Briar Heights
Golf Course as its home course.

Coach Jack Jones
Dr. Jack A. Jones joined the faculty of Bloomsburg
State College as Associate Professor of Physical Education
in September, 1969. He succeeded Jerry Thomas as golf
coach for the 1970 season.
A native of Fairfax, Alabama, Dr. Jones was awarded
his Bachelor of Science degree from Livingston State
College and his Master of Arts from the University of
Alabama. He earned his Doctor of Physical Education
from Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana. Dr. Jones
has taught and coached football and basketball in a number
of high schools in Alabama. He was ·also assistant football
coach and head basketball coach at Livingston State College
for a period of eight years. Prior to coming to Bloomsburg,
he was a member of the faculty of Rhode Island University.
Dr. Jones has a keen interest in all sports and instills
great enthusiasm in his golf team.

TENNIS

Outlook
With oniy two regular· single players and one doubles
regular returning from the 1970 squad, coupled with a
handful of inexperienced players, the Husky racketmen
will find it difficult to improve last year's 3-6 record.

Juniors Jim Brewer and Curt Hannaman, returning
No. 3 and No. 5 singles performers, along with senior
Charles Hessf doubles player who will probably be in the
singles lineup, form the backbone of this year's squad.
Other reserve players from last year's squad expected to
bolster Coach Burt Reese's team will be senior Jim Fauth
and juniors Barry Greb and Lee Sitler.
Vying for their share of the action will be newcomers
junior Dwayne Greenly and freshmen Tom Jones, Tom
Leedom, and Ken Gross.
Reese has had his squad working indoors for a number
of weeks anticipating a break in the weather in order to
move to the outdoor courts and conditions more conducive
to the season's play.

Coach Burt Reese
Burton Rees_e joined the physical education staff .. at
Bloomsburg State College in January, 1969 and since that
time has served as head t~nnis coach and assistant basketball coach.
A native of Scranton, Pennsylvania, he earned both his
Bachelor of Science _and Master of Education degrees at
East Stroudsburg State College. While working on his
Master's degree, he coached basketball and tennis as a
graduate assistant at East Stroudsburg State College. He
then joined the faculty of Old Forge High School (Pa.)
where he was assistant basketball and football coach. He
served as athletic director at Abington Heights for three
and one half years where he also coached tennis and j.v.
basketball.
A former star athlete at Taylor High School and East
Stroudsburg State College, Reese has remained active in
amateur circles of tennis and basketball, both in which he
excels.
