BASEBALL
Outlook
Nine returning lettermen should bolster the Huskies' chances
of recording another winning season. Approximately 42 players
have been vying for team positions.
Veteran pitchers, Dave Moharter and Bill Houser, along with
two transfer hurlers, Bob Warner and Chris Penny, form the
nucleus of the mound staff. Other prospects include John Lepley,
up from last year's freshmen team, sophomores Phil Jordan and
Greg Stahora, and freshmen (who are now eligible for varsity)
Jeff Morser and Rick Twardzik.
Experienced catchers Bill Derr and Don Deitterick are expected to carry the load behind the plate. Freshmen candidates are
Gary Ritter, Charles Howley, Tony Peluso, Tom Stover, Jeff
White, and Floyd Hitchcock.
Dennis Weir returns again at third base and could be relieved
from time to time by Sam Cass, Dave Zito, Bob Herring or
Wayne Creasy. Joe Accardi, who hit .300 last year is back at
short stop with sophomore candidates, .Mark Vivian and Ron
Woodring. The third base position is up for grabs among Joe
Semion, Bob Parry, and Tom Sullivan.
Letterman Tom Fleeger, along with Dennis Sharkazy, Mike
Costanzo, and Ed Darrah are working at first base. Outfielders
include Rich Gatchell, last year's batting leader at .400; Dave
Smith, who followed with .310; sophomores-Fred McCann, John
Choyka, Bill Williams, and Mike Adams; Freshmen-Steve
Rudy, Jim Roberts, Dave Pool, and Dave Thomas.
If the Huskies can make their hitting more timely and improve
in pitching, the prospects of a good season and going into the
NAIA District 19 playoffs are bright.
Coach Clark Boler
Roderick "Clark" Boler joined the Health and Physical
Education Department at Bloomsburg State College in
September, 1968 replacing Eli McLaughlin as head baseball coach.
A native of Alabama, Boler received both his Bachelor
of Science and his Master of Arts degrees from the
University of Alabama where he was also a member of
its 1961 National Championship Football team.
For three years prior to coming to Bloomsburg, he
served as head baseball coach, assistant football coach,
and assistant basketball coach at Gadsden High School
in Alabama. While at Gadsden his baseball team posted
a total of 26 wins against 16 losses. In 1968, his team won
the Etowah County championships and the Northeast
Alabama conference title. In addition to playing football
at the University of Alabama, he was a member of the
varsity baseball team. Following his graduation, he played
on successful semi-pro baseball and basketball teams.
Last year Boler's B.S.C. baseball team posted a 6-3-1
record.

Outlook
TRACK
The loss of eight participants who compiled 176 points last
season leaves Coach Puhl with somewhat of a rebuilding job.
Major losses were team captain Tom Houston, 1968 NCAA eastern regional college champion and Pennsylvania Conference 440
yard intermediate hurdle champion and ace shot putter and
discuss thrower, Sam Jayne.
However, Puhl has indicated he has a nucleus of strong, young
aspirants who possess a great working attitude and a tremendous
will to win. Heading this group are tri-captains elect Jim Davis,
sprinter; Bob Lacock, jumper/hurdler; and Jim Cavallero, a
BSC javelin record holder (196'5" Western Frontier Relay
Champion). Two other mainstays are Mark Y anchek, BSC high
jump record holder at 6'4 3/4 ", and Pa. Conference triple jump
champion, Steve Ryznar (44'9").
Other valuable team members are: sprinters-John Lucysyn,
Greg Berger, John Masters, John Kulp, Rich Geise, Bruce Bittner, Ray Hendrickson, Rick Eckert, Henry Plumly; hurdlersJohn Reeves, Bob Herb, Doug Morrow, Charles Graham, Walt
Williams, Andy Kusma; distance runners-Mike Silvetti, Terry
Lee, Larry Strohl, Tim Waechte,r ; Field events-Mark Constable,
Gary Melhorn, John Ficek, Charles Shields, Rich Brand, Dale
Muchler, Allan Gryshuk, Carl Wilde, Malcolm Fleming, Kent
Pricer, and Alan Decker.
The BSC initial indoor track season, (2-2), this year could be
termed successful even under adverse training conditions. The
Husky thinclads posted victories over Muhlenburg and Ursinus
with two losses to East Stroudsburg.
Since the college track and field was removed several years
ago due to the building program, the Huskies have been handicapped in many ways. Present conditions will be evident until
the latter part of 1971 when part of the athletic complex on
the upper campus will be ready for use.
Coach Ronald Puhl
Ronald Puhl joined the Bloomsburg State College faculty
and coaching staff in September of 1966. In addition to his
teaching assignments in health and physical education, he
also serves as head track coach and varsity offensive backfield football coach. His track team record last season
was 4-3.
A native of Pottstown, Pennsylvania, Puhl was a three
letter winner in football, swimming, and field and track
while at Lock Haven State College from 1957 to 1961. He
began his coaching career at the Phoenixville Area Senior
High School where he served as varsity track ·and field
coach for four years, assistant wrestling coach for one year,
head gymnastics coach for three years, and varsity backfield coach for several years. He was named to the N .A.I.A.
"Little All-American Team" in 1960 for football and was
a Pennsylvania State College Champion in the 220-yard
low hurdles in 1961.
Puhl is an excellent conditioner of men and has the
ability to bring out in his team members a great desire
to win.

GOLF
Outlook
The B.S.C. golfers will attempt to maintain their winning ways again this season. The stickmen have registered
21 victories against 2 losses over the past two seasons.
Returning from last year's squad, who represented NAIA
District 19 in Houston, Texas, are seniors Bob Snyder
John Marshall, and Bob Simons along with junior Ed
Masich. This group will probably be regular starters. Two
newcomers who worked out with the team in the fall are
Steve Neumeyer and Jeff Hock, both potentially good
swingers.
Freshmen Rick Jurbala, who was a member of last year's
Berwick High championship team, may see action this
season and certainly should develop into a regular as an
upperclassman. Other untried candidates include Maher
Terence, Dave Madden, Chris Elliott, George Chiodo,
Randy Miller, Authur Pripa and Dick Adams.
For the first time in the history of the sport at B.S.C., a
southern trip is planned over the Easter Holiday which
should give the six potential starters some needed seasoning for a tough 15 meet schedule with the first home
opponent being Susquehanna University on April 7.
The Huskies will again use Briar Heights Golf Club
as the home course.
Coach Jack Jones
Dr. Jack A. Jones joined the faculty of Bloomsburg State
College as Associate Professor of Physical Education in
September, 1969. In taking over the helm as golf coach, he
replaces Jerry Thomas, who is on sabbatical leave during
the 1969-1970 college year pursuing his doctoral program.
A native of Fairfax, Alabama, Dr. Jones was awarded
his Bachelor of Science degree from Livingston State
College and his Master of Arts from the University of
Alabama. He earned his Doctor of Physical Education from
Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana. Dr. Jones has
taught and coached football and basketball in a number of
high schools in Alabama. He was also assistant football
coach and head basketball coach at Livingston State College for a period of eight years. Prior to coming to Bloomsburg, he was a member of the faculty of Rhode Island
University.
Dr. Jones has a keen interest in all sports and should
instill great enthusiasm in his golf team.

TENNIS
Outlook
While last year's team posted a winning record 5-4, the
Maroon and Gold racketmen this year will be hard pressed
to wind up on the winning side of the ledger.
Only two lettermen, Doyle Klinger and Dwight Ackerman, will be back in uniform. Klinger played No. 3 singles
and No. 2 doubles, while Ackerman was primarily a
doubles player. Other members from last year's squad who
intend to make their presence felt are Jim Fauth, Barry
Greb, and Charles Hess.
It is with the above group, plus Rich Schildt and Jim
Brewer up from last year's frosh team along with several
new faces, that the Husky tennis team faces a tough
eleven match schedule.
Inclement weather and lack of indoor practicing areas
have hampered Coach Reese in developing these inexperienced players. Once the squad is able to use the Town
of Bloomsburg's courts regularly, the califre of play should
improve.
Coach Burt Reese
Burton Reese, head tennis coach, joined the Bloomsburg
State College faculty at the start of the second semester
of the 1968-69 college year.
A native of Scranton, Pennsylvania, he earned both his
Bachelor of Sci~nce and Master of Education degrees at
East Stroudsburg State College. While working on his
Master's degree, he coached basketball and tennis as a
graduate assistant at East Stroudsburg State College. He
then joined the faculty of Old Forge High School (Pa.)
where he was assistant basketball and football coach. He
served as athletic director at Abington Heights for three
and one half years where he also coached tennis and j.v.
basketball.
On arriving at Bloomsburg, Reese took over as freshman
basketball coach and replaced Dr. Mike Herbert as head
tennis coach for the 1969 season.
A former star athlete at Taylor High School and East
Stroudsburg State College, Reese has remained active in
amateur circles of both tennis and basketball.
