Outlook

Coach Clark Boler

Approximately 30 players have been vying for pos1t10ns
for several weeks on the Husky squad.
Included in this
group are eight returning lettermen along with eight
promising sophomores from last year's frosh team.

Roderick "Clark" Boler, who joined the Health and
Physical Education Department at Bloomsburg State
College last September, replaces Eli McLaughlin as head
baseball coach.
McLaughlin resigned his baseball duties
due to a conflict in serving as head swimming coach.

Returning varsity pitchers include Steve Klinger, Wally
Smith, and Steve Keefer.
Two promising sophomores are
Dave Moharter and Bill Houser.
Other probable pitchers
are Tom Matthews, Bob Rupp, and Bill Schappell.

A native of Alabama, Boler received both his Bachelor
of Science and his Master of Arts degrees from the University of Alabama where he was also a member ot its 1961
National Championship Football team.

Catchers include only one varsity returnee, Don
Deitterick, who will be pushed greatly by sophomore
Gary Bloom.
Others vying for catching duties are Marvin
Serhan, Bill Derr, and Vance Moyer.
Infield candidates
are led by varsity returnees Denny Weir and Frank
Mastroianni.
Additional propects for infield berths include Joseph A1ccardi, Fran DeAndrea, Thomas Fleeger,
Ron Magargle, Jim McCabe, Ken Payer, Tom Sullivan,
and Joe Sitler.

For three years prior to coming to Bloomsburg, he
seved as head baseball coach, assistant football coach, and
assistant basketball coach at Gadsden High School. While
at Gadsden his baseball team posted a total of 26 wins
against 16 losses.
In 1968, his team won the Etowah
County championships and the Northeast Alabama conference title.
In addition to playing football at the University
of Alabama, he was a member of the varsity baseball team.
Following his graduation, he played on successfull semipro baseball and basketball teams.

Outfield positions are wide open with Eric Landers the
only returnee from last year's varsity squad.
Other
prospects are Dave Smith, Rich Camuso, Rich Gatchell,
Tom Wilson, Greg Kanaskie, and Daniel Zito.
The Huskies will be out to improve upon the last two
mediocre seasons of 7-7-1 and 6-5.
Coach Boler will be
aiming to get the Huskies back in national contention as
they were in 1965 with a 13-4 record which sent them into
the N.A.I.A. district playoffs.

TRACK
Outlook

Coach Ronald Puhl

The Huskies will be out to improve on last year's 4-3
season's record, sixth place finish in the Pennsylvania
Conference meet and eighth place finish in the N.C.A.A.
Atlantic Coast College Division Regionals.
A marhd
improvement in the Pennsylvania Conference competition
is expected by Coach Ron Puhl and his thinclads. The
Huskies are somewhat hindered by not having a bonafide
running track; an eight lane all-weather track is scheduled
in the new athletic complex with construction to begin
this year.
Leading the returnees this year is captain Tom Houston,
a senior hurdler with an enviable athletic record.
Last
year Tom was a Pennsylvania Conference champion in the
440 yard Intermediate Hurdles, N.C.A.A. Atlantic Coast
Regional Champion in the same event with a B.S.C. record of 53.2 seconds, the Bethlehem Emery Relay Champion, and the team's high point winner.
He also is the coholder of the 120 yard High Hurdle with a time of 15.2 set
by Roy Peffer in the early 1960's. Tom also is a standout
performer on the B.S.C. swimming team.
Other valuable returnees are: Dave Smither, who was
the fourth place one half mile finisher in the Pennsylvania
Conference and a B.S.C. co-record holder of that event 1n
1 :58.4; Sam Jayne, shot put and discus; John Lucysyn, and
Greg Berger, sprinters; Frank Matthews, discus; and Mark
Yanchek, consistent 6' high jumper.
Additional returnees
include Chuck Bowman, Vic Keeler, Craig Shotwell, Tom
Henry, Bob Matukaitus, and Jim Levan.
The above nucleus, along with a group of untried sop110mores, greatly enhanced the squad's depth and should
provide the ammunition for an improved season.

Ronald Puhl joined the Bloomsburg State College faculty
and coaching staff in September of 1966. In addition to
his teaching assignments in health and physical education,
he also serves as head track coach and varsity offensive
backfield football coach.
A native of Pottstown, Pennsylvania, he was a three letter
winner in football, swimming, and field and track while at
Lock Haven State College from 1957 to 1961. He began
his coaching career at the Phoenixville Area Senior High
School where he served as varsity track and field coach
for four years, assistant wrestling coach for one year, head
gymnastics coach for three years, and varsity backfield
coach for several years. He was named to the N.A.I.A.
"Little All-American Team" in 1960 for football and was
a Pennsylvania State College Champion in the 220-yar low hurdles in 1961.
Puhl is an excellent conditioner of men and has the
ability to bring out in his team members a great desire
to win.

GOLF
Outlook
The B.S.C. golfers are looking towards another fine
season. However, they will find last year's season record
of eleven victories and one defeat (best in the College's
history) difficult to match. Last year's number one and
two players, Alrbert Fisher and Jimmy Masich, have graduated and will be missed.
Several returning lettermen will attempt to lead the
Huskies to another successful season.
Seniors Ronald
Buffington and Thomas Castrilli are both experienced and
steady players. Juniors Robert Snyder and John Marshall
played outstanding golf a year ago and are expected to be
s tronger. Also back from last year's team are Dougias
Mcl<.oberts and Robert Simons; both should lend good
overall depth to the squad.
Thomas Lock and Ro.nald
Hartens, tine are capable golfers who can be depended
on if one of the more experienced golfers falters.
Two fine sophomores from the 1968 freshman team wili
probably break into the starting lineup. Edward Masich,
who is the current Berwick (Pa.) Club Champion, and
James Moye,r, who led last year's freshmen, are capable or
providing the B.S.C. Golf Team with outstanding play for
several more years.
The schedule for 1969 is well balanced between home c1.nd
a way matches. The strongest opponents appear to be
East Stroudsburg, Kutztown, Susquehanna, and Kings.

Coach Jerry Thomas
Jerry Thomas joined the Bloomsburg State College
Faculty in September of 1967 and is in his second year as
golf coach. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health and Physical Education and also serves as
di,rector of the intramural program.
A native of Birmingham, Alabama, he received his B.A.
from Furman University where he lettered three years
in varsity football. Coach Thomas received his M.A. from
the University of Alabama and is now completing work
on his Ed.D. in Health and Physical Education at Abbama. Prior to coming to
Bloomsburg he served as
Chairman of the Division of Health, Physical Education
and Recreation, Athletic Director, and golf coach at
Jefferson State Junior College in Birmingham, Alabama.
An outstanding golfer, Thomas will be advising the team
on many fine points of the game.

TENNIS
Outlook
The tennis team at Blooms.burg State College will be
shooting- for its third consecutive winning season. Last
year's 7-2 record, under Coach Mike Herbert, was one of
the best records in many years for the Maroon and Gold.
As in practically all sports, physical conditioning plays
an important role in the success of the team. New head
coach Burt Reese has been stressing physical conditioning
since the team members were first called out a number of
weeks ago .
O nly two players, Bob Zalonis and Ed Dietrich, have
been lost from last year's squad. The number two through
six players from last year are all back and include in order:
Art Worley, junior; Dale Houck, senior; Gerry Fulmer,
senior; Doyle Klinger, sophomore; and Thomas Clewell,
junior. Another senior Jeff Miller, who played number
five man as a sophomore, is returning.
Up from last year's frosh team are Dwight Ackerman,
Jim Fauth, and Bruce Berry. With a nucleus made up of the
above experienced players, the Husky tennis team is aiming
to keep the winning season streak in vogue.

Coach Burt Reese
Burton Reese, head tennis coach, joined the Bloomsburg
State College faculty at the start of the second semester of
the 1968-69 college year.
A native of Scranton, Pennsylvania, he earned both his
Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees at
Eas,t Stroudsburg State College. While working on his
Master's degree, he coached basketball and tennis as a
g-raduate assistant at East Stroudsburg State College. He
then joined the faculty of Old Forge High School (Pa.)
where he was assistant basketball and football coach. He
has served as athletic director at Abington Heights for the
past three and one half years where he also coached tennis
and j.v. basketball.
On arriving at Bloomsburg, Reese took over as freshman
basketball coach, replacinv Doug Boelhouwer, who has
accepted a position with the Department of Public Instruction at Harrisburg.
A former star athlete at Taylor High School and East
Stroudsburg State College, Reese has remained active in
amateur circles of both tennis and basketball.
