TEAM OUTLOOK
This year's squad, featuring three juniors, six sophomores, and seven freshmen, has the potential of being the
best talented group to represent Bloomsburg State College
since 1967 when the Huskies defeated all the conference
opponents only to lose the Pennsylvania Conference
Championship· to West Chester by four and one half
points.
"It is difficult to project how well we'll do at this
point, but I'm confident we will continue our winning
season tradition which has been in tact since 1965," remarked Coach Eli Mclaughlin. "A big feature in our
training program will be how fast the freshmen can make
the transition to the longer distances in college events.
Points earned in the one meter and three meter diving
events will be more significant than in previous seasons
towards the outcome of each meet.'·
In addition to the regular season opponents, this year's
schedule offers many new challenges with Oneonta, Binghamton, and Edinboro replacing California, Slippery Rock,
and Indiana University of Pa. Again this year several of
the BSC home meets will be broadcast over radio station
WHLM due to anticipated capacity crowds and the
increase in interest in the sport of swimming.
"We are certainly happy with our past achievements,
but are now gearing our workouts to new goals and
records we hope to establish," stated Mclaughlin.
The lack of seniors on the squad points back to three
years ago when Mclaughlin was on sabbatical leave and,
as a result, there was little recruiting of high school
swimmers for BSC. Seniors normally furnish good leadership and are an advantage to have on any athletic team.
Mclaughlin is also concerned with the fact that there are
only seven freshmen on the squad as originally he had
approached approximately 15 good swimmers, but many
decided on other colleges during August. With such a
young team and the hope that a talented group of
swimmers will be coming to BSC next year, the future is
bright.
O
Leading the returning Husky lettermen will be junior
diver Eric Cureton; along with a former springboard performer Bob Myers and transfer Paul Richards. However,
the nucleus of the team will chiefly be composed of the
following sophomores: Pennsylvania 500 yard freestyle
conference champion Rich Kozicki, team captain Bill Ewell,
Jim Campbell, George King, Garry Lausch, and Tim
Sopko. This year's group of fine freshmen include outstanding sprinters Stu Marvin and Dave Slade and diver
Rich Walter along with "Woody" Jones, Doug Thran,
Steve Packer, and Ed Ortals.
"This enthusiastic and dedicated squad, along with our
new facility, including the electronic timing equipment,
should provide many exciting events along with stimulating new interest in the intercollegiate swimming program at BSC this season," Mclaughlin points out.
