''HUSKIES''
Team Outlook
The obstacles Coach Eli McLaughlin and his Husky
swimmers have faced in preparing for this year's competition are
the greatest encountered in the history of intercollegiate
swimming at BSC.
"First of all," McLaughlin remarked, "we face an extremely
strong schedule with a squad having only seven returning lettermen. Then the change to new semester dates creates another
challenge at keeping the team in good physical condition during
the longer holiday break period. To further complicate matters,
the original date for use of the new swimming pool was delayed
due to a water supply problem."
Regardless of these obstacles, the Husky coach indicated
that adverse conditions have been overcome before and that this
year's team will provide many exciting meets for the loyal
Husky followers. "We are perhaps the only team in the nation
that has broadcasted our swimming meets due to standing room
only crowds," McLaughlin ventured. "With anticipated standout
performances from our freshmen to help complement the
veterans, we hope these conditions will prevail in our new, larger
facility."
The squad has been hard hit by the graduation of four key
swimmers - Jack Feyrer, Bob Herb, Bob Jones, and Ken
Narsewicz. Seniors facing their last year of dual competition are:
Dave Gibas, NAIA All-American Champion in the 50 yd. freestyle
in 1971 and fourth place finisher in that event in 1972,
Pennsylvania Conference Champion in both the 50 and 100 yd.
freestyle events for the past two years, and undefeated in all dual
meet competition in his college career; Jim Koehler, holder of the
team's 200 yd. breaststroke record and a member of the school's
record holding 400 yd. medley relay team; Doug Yocom, a
member of the school's record holding 400 yd. freestyle relay
team; Jon Stoner, also a member of the record holding 400 yd.
freestyle relay team; and Steve Coleman, who has much more
diving potential than the scores have indicated in the past.
McLaughlin has stated that Gibas has been the most aggressive
competitor he has ever coached and that Koehler, Yocom,
Stoner, and Coleman will be even better this year.
Other upper classmen with varsity experience that would be
vying for team events will be: Dale Alexander, Joe Hilgar, and
Eric Cureton. According to McLaughlin, "There is no question
that the freshmen are expected to bolster the squad's strength
and balance. This is the finest first-year aggregation since the
'Moerschbacher gang' of a few years ago. They have expressed a
great desire to contribute and cooperate."
Included in the yearling group are: Rick Kozicki, Jim
Campbell, Tim Sopko, George King, Bill Ewell, Garry Lausch,
David Lill, Ed Grosik, Jim Brown, Conrad Auel, Kirk Ohlinger,
Pete Sampsell, and Clair Hock.
Looking forward to the season, McLaughlin said, "With a
brand new facility which will enable more fans to support the
team and with such a promising group of competitors, BSC
should have another successful season."
