SWIMMING OUTLOOK
While Coach Eli McLaughlin, the head coach of
the Huskies since 1969, is on sabbatical leave working on his doctor's degree at the University of West
Virginia, the team this season will be under the guidance of Coach Cecil Turberville, Assistant Football
Coach and Trainer. Assisting Turberville will be
graduate assistant Tom Houston, an outstanding
freestyle performer for Bloomsburg last season.
With only a few veterans returning from last year's
squad that posted an impressive 9-2-1 record, Coach
Turberville will have his hands full in trying for an
equal or better season. Highlights of last year were
the big victories over Monmouth ( 56-57), East
Stroudsburg (53-51), and Slippery Rock (54-50).
Bloomsburg, with its outstanding dual meet record,
finished a disappointing third in the Pen:rtsylvania
State College Championships, behind West Chester
and Slippery Rock.
Realizing the tough schedule ahead, Coach Turberville, who was tied up with his football and training
duties, has had the squad in an intensive training
program since early October under the direction of
Houston. Captain Ralph Moerschbacher, last year's
Pennsylvania Conference 200 and 500 yard freestyle
champion, and Gary Hitz, seniors, along with four
juniors, five sophomores, and eight freshmen have
been vying for key roles on the team. Under the
new Pennsylvania Conference ruling, freshmen are
eligible for varsity swimming competition this year.
The freshmen candidates have shown progress in
workouts and will improve as the season progresses.
One of these bright prospects is Dave Gibas, an ALL
AMERICAN high school swimmer in the 50 and 100
yard freestyle events.
Lost through graduation, in addition to
were two other stalwart performers, Tim
Ed McNertney. Coach Turberville feels
that his sophomores and juniors can fill
left vacant by the three graduates.

the spots

Over the past few seasons, the Huskies have shown
definite improvement, but this season will be a real
challenge. The competition among the conference
teams will be the best ever, plus a number of other
opponents including Temple, Monmouth, Wilkes,
Kings, Glassboro State and Trenton State should
prove to be formidable opponents. If all the members
of the team show the enthusiasm and the desire to
improve that they have to date, B.S.C. should have
~nother winning season.

CECIL TURBERVILLE
HEAD SWIMMING COACH
A member of the Physical
Education Department at
Bloomsburg State College
since January 1966, Coach
Turberville takes over the
reigns of the Husky swimmers while Eli McLaughlin,
Head Coach of B.S.C. since
1959, is on sabbatical leave
pursuing his doctor's degree.
Coach Turberville received
both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts
degrees from the University of Alabama in his native
state. Prior to coming to Bloomsburg he taught and
was active in the athletic programs at the two Alabama High Schools of South Side in Selma and
Lowndes County in Fort Deposit.
During the 1968 football season, he served as offensive line coach and this season was assistant freshmen coach. In addition, he is the trainer for the B.S.
C. freshmen and varsity football teams.
Extremely popular with all the athletes, "Cece"
should be an added incentive for the Huskies to
come through with a fine season.

TOM HOUSTON
ASSISTANT COACH
Houston, a former standout on the Husky swimming team, is currently a graduate assistant working
on his Master's degree. In addition to holding the
B.S.C. 50 yard freestyle record of 23.4, he also
performed well in the 100 yard freestyle event. In
addition, he was a 1967 Pennsylvania State College
champion in the 440 yard intermediate hurdles.
During the past summer, he coached the Town of
Bloomsburg's Swimming Team.
With Coach Turberville being tied up with his
football and training duties, the early training of
this year's Husky squad fell under Houston's direction. Having performed with a number of this year's
veterans, Houston is well aware of their capabilities
and will undoubtedly be instrumental in the "hustle"
of the Maroon and Gold tankmen.
