SWIMMING OUTLOOK
1968
With a number of veterans returning from last
year's squad tha1 posted an impressive 9-2 record,
optimism is high in the Husky camp for an equal or
better season. Highlights of last year were the
"big victories" over West Chester (62-42), Slippery
Rock (65-39), and Lycoming College (~0-45).
"Even though we had our moments of glory,"
coach McLaughlin stated, "we were disappointed with
our performance in the Pennsylvania State College
Championships when we lost out to perennial powerhouse West Chester in the last relay and finished
second. Over the past few years we have shown
definite improvement, but this season will be a real
challenge. The competition between the conference
teams should be the best ever, and Millersville could
very well be the 'dark horse'."
Realizing the tough schedule ahead for the Huskies,
Coach McLaughlin has had his squad in an intensive training program for a number of weeks. Tricaptains Tim Carr, Tom Houston, and Ed McNertney,
all seniors, along with five juniors and eight sophomores have been vying for key roles on the team.
The Huskies will have the P.S.C.A.C. 400 yard
championship medley relay team returning of Bub
High, Vince Shiban, Ed McNertney, and Tim Carr.
Also on deck will be the P.S.C.A.C. 200 free styie
individual champion, Ralph Moerschbacher.
Lost through graduation were Jim Poechmann,
Britt Jones, and Fred Bausch. "We will miss these
fellows as they were outstanding competitors,''
McLaughlin stated, "but we are hoping some of om
sophomores will be able to replace them. If all the
members of the team continue to show the enthusiasm and desire to improve, B.S.C. should have
another fine year.
The freshmen have shown promise m early workouts and will undoubtedly improve as the season
progresses. Although the ranks are thin, there is
a definite interest and a fine mental attitude among
the Husky Pups. B.S.C. has had fine freshmen
teams in recent years and it is hoped that this year
will be no exception.
ELI McLAUGHLIN, SWIMMING COACH
A native of Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, and a
graduate of West Chester State College (B.S. and
M.Ed.), Eli McLaughlin has brought the Bloomsburg
State College swimming teams a long way since
taking over the reins in 1961. Last year his Husky
swimmers placed second in the Pennsylvania State
College Championship Meet and placed third in that
competition the two previous years. In the 1966-67
season, he produced a P.S.C.A.C. diving champion
and last year a P.S.C.A.C. championship medley
relay team and a 200 yard free style individual
champion.
McLaughlin is an assistant professor in the Health
and Physical Education Department where he specializes in the teaching of aquatics. In addition to
coaching swimming, over the years he has served
as head baseball coach for a year, assistant baseball
coach for two years, and varsity football line coach
for three years.
Eli has an extensive background as a swimming
coach and official. Former olympic referee and starter
Charles Roeser had much to do with the swimming
knowledge gained by McLaughlin. Many of the
swimmers coached by McLaughlin have gone to wi?1
recog nition as coaches and officials in the sport.
McLaughlin advocates a great deal of team hustle
and dedication which may be the key to his increasing success.
