SWIMMING AT B.S.C. -

1967

"When I first arrived at Bloomsburg State
College in September, 1961," Coach McLaughlin
recalls, "I was faced with quite a challenge. We had
a nice pool, an abbreviated schedule, limited equipment, and very few swimmers. Our first five encounters were chalked up to experience, but we improved
enough in the next meet to win the first swimming
meet since the initiation of the sport in 1959. Each
year we have made an effort to improve the calibre
of our schedule, feeling that a strong schedule
promotes good competition which results in better
and stronger swimming."
In addition to placing third in the Pennsylvania
State College Swimming and Diving Championships
the past two years, the Husky team of last season
produced a state champion diver, Don Beaulieu.
Along with Beaulieu, the following returning team
members participated in the National Association
Intercollegiate Athletics meet at Buffalo, New York:
Bruce Bendel, Tim Carr, Tom Houston, Ed MeNertney, and Jim Poechmann. Other returning lettermen are Fred Bausch and Britt Jones. Moving up to
the varsity from last year's freshman team are: Bill
Brehm, Ken Dugan, Bob High, Kerry Hoffman,
Dave McDermott, Ralph Moerschbacher, Vince Shiban, Ray Steppling, and Galen Wood.
Although Coach McLaughlin lost no one through
graduation several members of last year's squad will
not be returning. Beaulieu is now in the Air Force,
and Gary Hitz, the state freshman diving champion,
has transferred to another college. Although it is
unfortunate to lose two top divers, Bill Brehm has
been looking very good on the board and should
fill the gap.
This season's team has depth and strength, but
may lack balance.
Some members will still be
counted on for heavy duty. Since there are plenty of
freestylers, the competition within the squad will be
keen for those events. Potentially, this is the strongest B.S.C. team ever assembled and indications for
a successful season are evident by the enthusiasm
and spirit generated over the past several weeks of
early training. The team is aware of the tough
schedule ahead and is ready to meet the challenge.
Another fine group of freshmen talent has been
corralled by Coach McLaughlin. They have displayed signs of being equally as strong as in past
years. Many thrilling events should be provided in
their seven meets.
Coach McLaughlin and his team respect their
opponent's potential, but are out to gain respect as
well. "Last year," McLaughlin states, "we were
edged out of second place by a few points in the
State Championship meet, but I feel confident this
team will bear watching throughout the season."

ELI McLAUGHLIN
HEAD COACfl OF SWIMMING
A native of Valley Forge, Pennsylvania and a
graduate of West Chester State (B .S. and M.Ed.),
Coach Eli McLaughlin, having directed the B.S.C.
team since 1961, has developed a rather successful
and popular swimming program in seven years. His
Husky swimmers placed third in the Pennsylvania
State College Championship the past two years with
last season's team producing a Pennsylvania State
College Diving Champion. His overall dual meet
record is 44 wins, 37 losses, and 1 tie.
McLaughlin is an assistant professor in the
Health and Physical Education Department where
he specializes in the teaching of aquatics. In addition
to coaching the freshmen and varsity swimming
teams, he is also head coach of baseball, advisor to
Alpha Phi Omega fraternity, supervisor of aquatic
activities, and a member of the Homecoming and
Commencem ent Policy Committees.
Eli has an extensive background as a swimmin g
coach and official. Former Olympic referee and
starter, Charles Roeser, had much to do with the
swimming knowledge gained by McLaughlin. Many
of the swimmers, coached by McLaughlin, have gone
on to win recog nition as coaches and officials in the
sport.
