SEASON'S OUTLOOK
The intercollegiate sport of swimming at Bloomsburg State College will be handicapped to a great
degree without the use of freshmen.
However,
Coach McLaughlin feels the varsity swimmers have
been displaying the same spirit and enthusiasm
which have provided keen competition for the opponents in the past. For several weeks now, they have
been working very hard in preparation for the season opener with Temple University on December 5.
A big loss to the Maroon and Gold wi ll be last
yea r's versatile team captain, Floyd Grimm, who
graduated in May. Coach McLaughlin will expect
the fo llowing returning lettermen to continue improving up on their past records: Juniors Don Belt z,
William Bi ll et, Ray Fox, Jerry Lomas, Dick Steidel,
William Turley, and Jim Young; Sophomores Barry
Scheetz, A lan Shoop, Regis Sterling, and Jim Walsh.
Lack of depth wil l require the members to be in
excell ent condition as many will participate in the
maximum of three events.
The captain for the team this season is Dick
Steidel, a diver for the past two years who has
excellent form and is a keen competitor and an inspiration to the rest of the squad.
Even though the freshmen are not eligible to
participate on a varsity level, they are scheduled to
swim in six meets. The freshmen vying for positions
on the team are: Chris Bandy, Fred Bausch, Don
Beaulieu, John Biggs, Walter Fischl, Carl Fries,
Steve Johnson, Britt Jones, Lester Jones, Linwood
Nester, Gary P letcher, Jim Poechman, and Pete
Wilde.
The freshman team has been training with the
varsity in prepa ration for their first meet with
Temple Un iversity. From all indications in prac ti ce, the events in th e meets should provide many
exciting finishes. With this in mind, the outlook
for the Varsity and Freshmen intercollegiate sport
9£ Swimming shows promise for 1964.

ELI MCLAUGHLIN-VARSITY
SWIMMING COACH
Eli McLaughlin will be starting his fourth season
as head coach of the Husky swimmers since joining
the Bloomsburg State College faculty and coaching
staff in September, 1961. After graduation from high
school, McLaughlin started his college career at
West Chester State College in 1949. A veteran of
military service, he was a Sergeant with the United
States Air Force, and as Director of Special Services at Edwards Air Force Base in California, he
organized, directed, and participated in the sports
program.
Returning to West Chester College in
1953, he was an outstanding center for three years
on the Ram's squad and served one year as line
coach for the freshman team before graduating in
1957.
While teaching at Penncrest High School, McLaugh lin continued his participation in athletics,
serving four years as football line coach, three years
as golf coach and two years as assistant wrest ling
coach. 1--1 e has an extensive background as a swimming coach and is an active collegiate swimming
official. Charles Roeser, former Olympic Referee
and Starter, who served as McLaughlin's mentor
while he was ga ining swimming knowledge, is given
considerable credit for much of his success in swimming and officiating. Many of the swimmers, coach ed by McLaughlin, have gone on to win recognition
as top performers, officials, and coaches in the sport.
In addition to coaching the freshman and varsity
~wimming teams, he serves as assistant baseball
coach, adv isor to the A lpha Phi Omega fraternity,
supervisor of the elementary swimming program,
co•chai rm an of the annual water show, an active
ro ll egiate swimming official and is an assistant professor in the Health and Physical Education Department specializing in teaching aquatics.
