PROGRESS EDITION 2001
Greetings from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, one of the 14 universities in the
Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.
There’s great change on the horizon at Edinboro University, but that’s nothing new.
Founded as a private training school for teachers, the Edinboro Academy became Northwestern
State Normal School, Edinboro State Teachers College, and Edinboro State College prior to
achieving its current status as Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and membership in the
14-university State System of Higher Education in 1983. Today, the institution that began in
1857 in one building with three teachers and 100 students now enrolls 7,200 students in 100
degree programs taught by more than 300 of the finest faculty in Pennsylvania.
Edinboro University entered the year 2000 and closed it by opening two new facilities.
In January, the opening of a new high-tech classroom building - the Arts and Sciences Center celebrated the first construction of a new building on the campus since 1976. The year closed
with the grand opening of Edinboro’s new Meadville Access Center in Meadville’s Downtown
Mall, giving neighboring Crawford County communities a full-service, one-stop site to access
the University’s array of programs, resources and services.
The fall 2000 semester began with the largest enrollment increase in ten years, bringing
the enrollment of both undergraduate and graduate students from 7,079 students the year before
to 7,212, an increase of nearly two percent. As a result of President Frank G Pogue’s plan to
recapture the out-of-state student market lost earlier to hefty tuition hikes, out-of-state
enrollment in 2000 increased by more than 26 percent.

PROGRESS EDITION 2001, continued

A new tradition was established as the University celebrated its first-ever Founder’s Day
in conjunction with the fall 2000 University-wide Convocation as the kick-off event for the
Campaign to Renovate Academy Hall, the school’s first building and one of the oldest Normal
School buildings in the United States still standing.
Another tradition inaugurated during the first year of the new millennium was the Frank
G Pogue Honors Scholarship Luncheon, an annual event that will enhance the University’s
ability to provide greater financial support for Edinboro’s best and brightest students through
scholarships.
The year 2000 also marked the 25th anniversary of Edinboro’s Office for Students with
Disabilities. For more than a quarter-century, the University has sustained a commitment to
educating and serving students with disabilities that is unmatched in Pennsylvania, and, in fact,
was ranked by U.S. News and World Report, Mobility magazine and WE magazine as one of the
top 10 universities in the country for its programs and services for these special campus
citizens.
As Edinboro University joined the nation and the world to share the arrival of the new
century and millennium, a “Century of Civility” theme and initiative was established to
encourage each member of the Edinboro Family to consider his or her role in promoting - and
living - civil ideals and actions in every aspect of life. In addition. President Frank Pogue
enjoyed the singular honor of serving as chairperson of the Erie County ‘Together 2000”
Millennium Commission. The “Century of Civility” theme has been expanded for the second
year of the 21st century to “Enabling Access to Academic Excellence in a Civil Community,” a
theme that underscores the mission and values of Edinboro University, northwestern
Pennsylvania’s only fully public institution of higher education.
As we continue to attend to our mission in a world where the only constant is change,
the Edinboro University Family again thanks its many friends for their ongoing support and the
promise of continued support as together we shape the future.

of his professional and personal energy to working as an advocate for the civil rights of people
with disabilities.
For the past several years, Kennedy has lectured widely throughout the world about his
experiences with cancer and his views about how to approach life with a disabling condition. He
also frequently lectures on such topics as the civil rights movement from a disability perspective,
health care reform, and other related topics.
A graduate of Wesleyan University, Kennedy also holds a master’s degree from Yale
University’s School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. Much of his interest is now focused
on studying the environmental factors which lead to disease and disability.

Kennedy has served as a teaching fellow on disability policy at Harvard University’s John
F. Kennedy School of Government. On the national level, he served for four years on the
executive committee of the President’s Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities.
