EDINBORO UNIVERSITY’S 2001 FAMILY & LEGACY WEEKEND
THIS FRIDAY AND SATURDAY
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania will hold its fourth annual Family & Legacy
Weekend beginning this Friday, September 21, with a full schedule of special activities for
students, families and alumni.
Family Weekend has been an Edinboro University tradition since 1996, when Dr. Frank
Pogue, during the first year of his presidency, introduced the event to bring families of new and
upperclass students to the campus to experience the environment where students live and learn
and to advance the concept of the Edinboro Family that he inaugurated that same year.
In 1998, Family Weekend was linked with Legacy Weekend, an event traditionally
hosted by the University’s Office of Alumni Affairs, to provide a better opportunity to involve
current students and their families with alumni and their families in the life of the University.
The 2001 Family & Legacy Weekend kicks off at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 21, with a concert
in the University Center featuring student choral, dance and instrumental groups. The Jazz
Cabaret with pop and jazz sounds of the Edinboro University Jazz Ensemble at 8:30 p.m. in the
University Center Kilt follows the student concert.
Registration for the weekend’s activities and a continental breakfast buffet with President
and Mrs. Frank Pogue start Saturday’s activities at 8:30 a.m. A gathering of the Parents and
Families Organization, which Pogue also formed in 1996, follows at 9:30 a.m.
Other activities scheduled in the University Center on Saturday morning include a craft
fair, student art exhibit, a residence hall carnival, faculty and staff workshops (including one on
lake effect snow), and, of course, the campus bookstore will be open fi*om 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The
Edinboro University Planetarium will also present two shows of “Legends of the Night Sky,” a
light-hearted look at Greek mythological characters, at 10:15 a.m. and 2 p.m.

against Gannon, and the “Edinboro Rag Relays” cross country meet, which starts at 11 a.m.
Three events close out Saturday’s activities: an Edinboro Family ecumenical worship
service at 7:30 p.m., a wheelchair basketball game with the Edinboro Rolling Scots taking on the

second visit to the Edinboro campus that day. Only the second chancellor in the State System’s
18-year history, Hample took office on August 1.
The reception welcoming new faculty and staff that follows the Convocation is suggested
as the best venue and time for media interviews with Chancellor Hample. Scheduled from 9:30
to 11 a.m., it will be held in the University Center Atrium (next to the Multipurpose Room).
Activities continue at 11 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house at the
renovated and redesignated Ghering Health and Wellness Center. This modernized facility will
combine campus and community resources to enable Edinboro students access to an inclusive
program of health services. Part of the ceremony will feature dedication of one of the new
conference rooms in honor of Mrs. Rita Hayes, the registered nurse who led campus health and
wellness efforts for 32 years until her recent retirement.
The second annual Founder’s Day Luncheon, noon to 1:30 p.m. in Van Houten South
Dining Hall, will feature a panel with discussants sharing perspectives and anecdotes on
Edinboro through the years. Moderated by Cyndy Patton, a 1980 Edinboro alumna and media

1:30 p.m. and continue to 4:30 p.m.
The walking tour will begin at Academy Hall - the oldest building on the Edinboro
campus - and will be conducted by University archivist David Obringer. The trolley tours will be
conducted by members of the Edinboro Highland Ambassadors student organization and will
include stops at Academy Hall, Baron-Fomess Library and Ross Hall’s technology and
communications center. Tours, displays and refreshments will be featured at each stop.
Founder’s Day concludes with a 5 p.m. Fighting Scot picnic and pep rally in preparation
for Saturday’s football game (1p.m. at Sox Harrison Stadium) - being billed as the “Backyard
Rival Classic” - against the Gannon University Golden Knights. Star 104 radio will broadcast
the pep rally live from the University Center Lawn.
Media coverage of all Founder’s Day activities, particularly the interview opportunity
with Chancellor Hample (9:30 to 11 a.m.), is invited.

FALL CONVOCATION AND FOUNDER’S DAY AT EDINBORO THIS FRIDAY,
NEW STATE SYSTEM CHANCELLOR TO ATTEND
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania will celebrate its sixth annual Fall University-wide
Convocation and second annual Founder’s Day this Friday (September 7) with a daylong series
of public events. The Convocation begins the day’s activities at 8:30 a.m. in the University
Center.
One of the many highlights of the day will be the presence of the new chancellor of the
Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, Dr. Judy G. Hample, who will be making her
second visit to the Edinboro campus that day.
Moderated by Cyndy Patton, a 1980 Edinboro alumna and media

campus - and will be conducted by University archivist David Obringer.
