EDINBORO TO HOLD COMMUNITY DIALOGUE FORUM TUESDAY
As a way to provide its external stakeholders the opportunity to share ideas, concerns and
perspeetives on issues of mutual interest, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania will hold the
special meeting, “The University as a Neighbor Community Dialogue Forum,” Tuesday, April 3,
in Van Houten South Dining Hall, beginning at 1:30 p.m.
Shortly after his arrival on campus in July 1996, President Frank G. Pogue created what
he called the University as a Neighbor Advisory Group (UNAG) to enable stakeholders from
throughout the university’s service region to serve as the school’s external “eyes and ears” and
inform it of needs and ideas.
Tuesday’s Community Dialogue Forum is an extension of Pogue’s early initiative, and he
has invited area legislators, educators, business owners and community leaders to join UNAG
members for the event.
Fifteen “Dialogue Circles” will meet and discuss issues ranging from aecess and
admissions to university-business partnerships, from university image and community values to
public safety and economic development, and from community service and diversity to
internships and host community interests.
Pogue said that the information and perspectives gained during the Dialogue Circles will
be considered by the Edinboro Family Forum on University and Community Life as that group
composes the Guiding Principles for the Edinboro Family. Additionally, all Community
Dialogue Forum partieipants will receive a written summary of the information shared during the
conference proceedings.
For more information on the University as a Neighbor Community Dialogue Forum,
contact the University President’s Office, 732-2711.

PULITZER PRIZE NOMINEE O’SHEA TO SPEAK AT EDINBORO
Pulitzer Prize nominee Kathleen O’Shea will present “Women on the Row” as
part of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania’s Women’s History Month celebrations on
Tuesday, March 27, at 7 p.m. in the University Center.
O’Shea, author of “Women on the Row: Revelations from Both Sides of the
Bars,” didn’t set out looking for cormections with women on death row. She wanted
information about them - who they are and the ways in which they live from day to day.
“I was writing a sociological reference book,” said O’Shea “a fairly safe, fairly
emotionless endeavor.” However as she got to know the incarcerated women she was
studying, what became clear to her were not their differences, but how in so many ways
she and the women in prison were the same. O’Shea is the only person to have contacted
every woman currently in United States prisons with a death sentence.
“Women on the Row,” is O’Shea’s honest, startling and sometimes raw,
sometimes radiant exploration of the places where doing heavy time and being free
overlap. Neither a treatise against the death penalty, nor an apologia for female
innocence, her book focuses on the interconnectedness of women’s lives. The author
creates memorable composite portraits of ten death row women based on her
conversations with them from information given to her, telephone calls and letters
exchanged.
O’Shea, a nun for 25 years, is a social worker who does research on female
offenders, particularly women on death row. She is a teacher, writer, activist and lecturer.

EDINBORO UNIVERSITY AND ERIE JEWISH COMMUNITY COUNCIL
ANNOUNCE HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE EVENTS APRIL 18-19
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and the William M. and Frances Schuster Fund of
the Jewish Community Coimcil of Erie will host their Aimual Holocaust Remembrance Program
at the Newman Center near the Edinboro Campus beginning at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18.
This year’s program, “Jewish Trauma - Christian Tragedy,” will discuss the impact of the
Holocaust on Jewish-Christian relations and will feature distinguished professor of Holocaust
and genocide studies Dr. Franklin H. Littell.
Littell, an ordained Methodist minister, is the distinguished professor of Holocaust and
Genocide Studies at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. During Littell’s illustrious
career, he served as a college professor, author and organizer of conferences and meetings as
well as spending ten years in post-war Germany as the chief Protestant religious adviser in the
American Zone.
Littell’s pioneering book, “The Crucifixion of the Jews,” was the first Christian response
to the Holocaust. It brought about a breakthrough by encouraging an entire new generation of
younger theologians and scholars to rethink the meaning of the Holocaust, anti-Semitism, the
survival of the Jewish people and the restoration of Israel. He has written over two dozen
scholarly books and more than 1,000 major articles.
In 1970, Littell fovmded the Annual Scholars’ Conference on the Holocaust and the
Churches, the oldest continuing interfaith scholarly meeting of its kind in the world. No
American theologian has done more than Littell in creating educational awareness of the
Holocaust and strengthening the cause of liberty and individual responsibility in a democracy.

HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE ACTIVITIES

Page Two •

His continuous effort on behalf of human responsibility is a voice of conscience for people
around the world.
In addition to Littell’s keynote address, a remembrance service will be held at the
Newman Center on Thursday, April 19, at 7 p.m. followed by “Man with a Mission,” presented
by Les Banos.
Banos, a Hungarian-born American, successfully infiltrated the German Secret Service as
part of the Hungarian resistance during World War II. Although he was of Jewish descent, he
was raised by his Lutheran aunt which kept his Jewish heritage shielded. His achievements
included acquiring intelligence about Axis troop movements, forging safe conduct papers for
citizens facing deportation, providing safe passage for downed Allied pilots and collaborating
with Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish diplomat who aided thousands of Hungarian Jews. Banos also
witnessed Wallenberg’s capture by the Russians in 1945.
The Holocaust Remembrance activities are free and open to the public. For additional
information, contact Linda Lacny, Edinboro University School of Liberal Arts, at 814-7322477.
