YOUNG WOMEN TO EXPLORE CAREERS IN COMPUTERS
AT EDINBORO’S COMPUTER CAMP
Young women who have an interest in pursuing a career in computer science and
management infom^tion systems will be able to explore this field and experience college
life during the Edinboro Summer Academy for the Advancement of Young Women in
Computer Science, June 25 through 28. Thanks to a grant sponsored by the Verizon
Foundation, more than 25 young women in grades eight, nine and ten from the Erie,
Crawford and Warren county schools will participate in the Academy, now in its second
year.
Statistics have shown a decline in the number of women graduating with
computer science degrees. The Academy will not only expose the young women to
opportunities available in the computer science field, but also provide them the
opportunity to enhance or correct any math deficiencies before leaving secondary school.
The students will participate in a variety of computer sessions taught by Edinboro
math and computer science faculty members. Web development, problem solving, and
program development will be covered, while evening activities will reinforce the
problem-solving theme.

TORCH NIGHT 2001 AT EDINBORO UNIVERSITY
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania will hold its fifth annual Torch Night ceremony this
Friday, May 11, at 6 p.m., in the University Center Multipurpose Room.
Torch Night was introduced by Edinboro University President Dr. Frank Pogue in 1997
to symbolize the passing of the torch of leadership and excellence to members of the student
body who will emerge as campus leaders, or “torch bearers,” of tomorrow.
Held each year on the eve of the spring commencement, the Torch Night program
combines fellowship and ceremony to create a unique opportunity for graduating students to bid
farewell to their teachers, mentors, colleagues and friends.
The spring Torch Night complements the annual Candle Lighting Ceremony held when
school opens each fall to welcome new students as full members of the Edinboro Family.
Bringing greetings to this year’s ceremony will be Portia McClellan, of Erie, the outgoing
student trustee; Lauren Moran, of Pittsburgh, the new Student Government Association
president; and Dan Higham, class of 1970, president of the Edinboro University Alumni

“Diversity at Edinboro University,” a reflection on the Edinboro experience, will be
presented by graduating senior Bernadette Loose, of East Brady, Pa.
Torch Night 2001 will conclude with a special message to the class of 2001 by President
Pogue.

YOUNG WOMEN TO EXPLORE CAREERS IN COMPUTERS
AT EDINBORO’S COMPUTER CAMP
Young women who have an interest in pursuing a career in computer science and

The students will participate in a variety of computer sessions taught by Edinboro

Association.
“Diversity at Edinboro University,” a reflection on the Edinboro experience, will be
presented by graduating senior Bernadette Loose, of East Brady, Pa.
Torch Night 2001 will conclude with a special message to the class of 2001 by President
Pogue.
