EDINBORO RECEIVES EDUCATIONAL SOFTWARE GRANTS
The Miller Research Learning Center at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania
received two educational software grants totaling $81,000 from Point Click Learn, Inc.,
an Edinboro-based distributor for the American Education Cori^ation (AEC) and

AutoSkills International Inc.
The “Center of Excellence Grant” for the Advanced Learning System’s software.
published by the American Education Corporation, gives the University to select 66 fulllicense network titles that cover five core curriculum areas of science, social studies,
math, writing and language arts. The software will be installed in all Miller Research
Learning Center offices, labs and classrooms, for the faculty to use in their courses, for
the education students, and for faculty and the students of Miller school.
The University also received a full-network license for the Academy of Reading
software, an interactive tool designed to develop reading skills for reading-delayed and
disabled learners, valued at $12,500.
“This wonderful gift is going to allow us to provide more software instruction in
reading, writing and mathematics for all the children in the Miller School,” said Dr. Scott
Baldvvdn, dean of education. “Students participating in the Boys and Girls Club who are
being tutored by Edinboro University students 'svill also benefit from this gift. The
software will also be used by professors in order to demonstrate software applications for
undergraduate students.”
“As an educator myself, I strongly believe in the value and benefit of these two
nationally recognized award-winning programs,” said Misty O’Connor, president and
owner of Point Click Learn. “The use of these programs will not only benefit the students

EDINBORO’S 2001-2002 CONCERT AND LECTURE SERIES ANNOUNCED
Jazz pianist Kenny Werner will perform at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania
as part of the 2001-2002 Concert and Lecture Series on Wednesday, November 7, at 8
p.m. in the University Center. At the age of eleven, he recorded a single with a 15-piece
orchestra and appeared on television playing stride piano.
Werner has toured extensively with Archie Shepp, has had solo concerts in
Europe and New York City, and duos with such notables as Rufus Reid, Ray Drummond
and Jaki Byard. A 14-year association with bassist Ratzo Harris and drummer Tom
Rainey produced one of the most daring and innovative trios to ever play together.
Werner credits much of his musical development - conceptually and rhythmically - to
the experience of playing with Harris and Rainey. He has given clinics at many
universities in the United States and abroad and teaches privately as well.
The 2001-2002 Concert and Lectures Series is sponsored by Edinboro
University’s Student Government Association and Office of Cultural Affairs.
Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens. Edinboro
University students are free with valid I.D. For additional information or ticket

The presidents of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, Gannon University and
Mercyhurst College will take part in a luncheon discussion on student alcohol abuse on
Monday, November 5, at noon in Edinboro University’s Van Houten Dining Hall. The
Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board is sponsoring the event.
Joining Edinboro President Frank G. Pogue will be Gannon President Antoine
Garibaldi, Mercyhurst President William Garvey and representatives from Allegheny
College and Penn State Erie - the Behrend Campus.
The meeting is a project of the Healthy Lifestyles Committee, an inter-university
group composed of representatives from the four Erie County higher education
institutions. It is an opportunity for campus and community leaders to discuss pertinent
issues and pledge their ongoing commitment to addressing alcohol abuse among college
students.

Edinboro University of Pennsylvania will host its Fall 2001 Research Colloquium
on Tuesday, October 23, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in 106 Arts and Sciences.
The event will feature four presentations;

U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT RECOGNIZES EDINBORO UNIVERSITY’S
ONLINE GRADUATE PROGRAM IN SPECIAL EDUCATION
U.S. News and World Report has recognized Edinboro University of
Pennsylvania for its graduate online program in special education. For its article, “Best of
the Online Grad Programs, the magazine surveyed college and university programs
nationwide.
The October 15 issue lists online programs in the fields of business, education,
engineering, library science, and public health. Edinboro University is one of 43
regionally accredited colleges and universities on the education list, and is the only
university in Pennsylvania so recognized.
Edinboro University s online program is a master’s degree in special education
that began offering its first course this fall to teachers in Pennsylvania, New York, and
Ohio. The entire program will be available online through the Internet with the exception
of a three-week summer residency in Edinboro. It is the first time the University has
offered a degree program online.
The University’s Dean of Education, Dr. Scott Baldwin, said, “This is a program
that serves students who are unable to attend classes on campus because they live in
remote locations or have significant family responsibilities.”

Unlike other U.S. News & World Report college rankings, this report combines
colleges and universities of all sizes together. Among the schools listed with Edinboro
University are George Washington University, Michigan State University, the University
of Maryland, and the University of Wisconsin.

EDINBORO ANNOUNCES PROVOST’S LECTURE SERIES
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania opens its new Provost’s Lecture Series on
Wednesday, October 24, with a presentation by Janies Fisher, criminal justice professor.
He served for six years as a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and
authored several books including two on the Lindbergh kidnapping case, which brought
him national attention. Fisher’s lecture begins at 7:30 p.m. in the University Center’s
multipurpose room. His book, “Fall Guys: False Confessions and the Politics of
Murder,” was nominated in 1997 for the Mystery Writers of America Edgar Allan Poe
Award in the Best Fact Crime category. His 1999 book, “The Ghosts of Hopewell,”
received an Edgar nomination. “Crimson Stain,” the story of murder in an Amish
community, is a national best seller in the true crime category.
As a criminal justice professor at Edinboro University, Fisher has taught criminal
investigation, criminalistics, security systems, and arson investigation, which includes
bombings and other terrorist acts. He also is the owner of a large security firm and has
appeared as a criminal justice expert and author on numerous television programs and
documentaries.
Dr. Max Azicri, professor of political science and criminal justice and an
internationally recognized scholar on Cuba and Latin America, will lecture on
Wednesday, November 14, at 3 p.m. in the University Center first floor seminar room. He
has published more than 120 scholarly articles in eleven countries around the world and is
the author of two books on Cuba, both of which are used as texts in universities

SOFIA ORTHODOX CHOIR TO PERFORM AT EDINBORO
The Sofia Orthodox Choir, under the direction of conductor Miroslav Popsavov,
will perform in concert at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania on Tuesday, October 30,
at 8 p.m. in the Newman Center as part of the 2001-2002 Concert and Lectures Series.
Popsavov, one of the most distinguished Bulgarian conductors in the sphere of
Orthodox music, conducts many church choirs and teaches at the Music Academy in
Sofia. The Sofia Orthodox Choir has several years of experience in both nonclerical and
sacred music. They will produce harmonization of ancient tunes and original works by
famous masters of the musical script.

EDINBORO UNIVERSITY HOSTS “HALLOWEEN MUSIC AND STORIES
FOR KIDS” AT THE BLASCO LIBRARY
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania Chamber Players and the music department
will present a free program, “Halloween Music and Stories for Kids,” at the Hirt
Auditorium of the Blasco Memorial Library on Saturday, October 27, at 10:30 a.m.
Wally Faas, radio host from WQLN, will be the guest Halloween narrator. Audience
members will interact with the performers throughout the program and are invited to
wear their Halloween costumes. This is the second year this successful program has been
presented at the Blasco Library.
Performers and audience will interact in stories and music portraying the spooky
as well as the fun side of Halloween. Edinboro University faculty and students will
perform the “Danse Macabre,” “Funeral March for a Marionette” (The Alfred Hitchcock
theme), Grieg’s “In the Hall of the Mountain King,” Bach’s “Toccata and Fugue,”
Rossini’s “Cat Duet,” and Henry Mancini’s theme from the “Pink Panther.” Children
will be invited to the stage at the conclusion of the program to try out many musical
instruments with the supervision of Edinboro University’s music students.
“Halloween Music and Stories for Kids” was made possible through the
Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts program of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a
state agency. It is funded by the citizens of Pennsylvania through an annual legislative
appropriation, and administered locally by the Arts Council of Erie, Inc. The
Pennsylvania Council on the Arts is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, a
federal agency.

EDINBORO HOLDS HOMECOMING 2001
“Monopoly” will be this year’s Edinboro University of Pennsylvania Homecoming
theme, welcoming students, alumni, families, friends and the community to the series of events
that mark the school’s annual fall celebration.
Tee time for the 10^^ Annual Alumni and Friends Golf Outing at Culbertson Hills Golf
Resort is 9 a.m. on Friday (October 12). Sponsored by the Edinboro University Alumni
Association, proceeds will go toward the Fighting Scot Statue project.
Also on Friday and again at Culbertson Hills, the traditional alumni reception - “The
Friday Night Bash” - begins at 8 p.m. Edinboro alumni Shawn and Jeani Fallon will provide the
music. The reception is free, but reservations are appreciated.
On Saturday, October 13, President and Mrs. Frank Pogue will host the traditional
“Brunch on the Lawn” at 10:30 a.m. under the reeeption tent on the Reeder Hall lawn along the
Meadville Street parade route.
The Homecoming parade will weave its way through Edinboro beginning at 11 a.m. with
floats decorated to salute this year’s “Monopoly” theme and marching units from across the
region.
Kickoff for Saturday’s Homecoming classic at Sox Harrison Stadium with the Fighting
Scots taking on the Clarion Golden Eagles is 2 p.m. The Homecoming king, queen and court, as
well as the winning floats, will be presented during pre-game ceremonies.
Homecoming 2001 closes on Sunday with the 10^^ Annual Tartan 5K Fun Run in Sox
Harrison Stadium. Registration at 8:30 a.m. with a $20 fee for participants who register at the
event.

“CAKE-CUTTING” FOR MASTER OF SOCIAL WORK TODAY
AT EDINBORO UNIVERSITY
Editor’s Note: The media are invited to join Edinboro University President Frank
G. Pogue and other administration and faculty for a “Cake-Cutting” ceremony today,
October 11, from 4 to 6 p.m. in Van Houten North dining hall. The event is to recognize
the progress to date in seeking accreditation for the University’s Master of Social Work
(MSW) program.
The University has applied for accreditation for its MSW program from the
Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). In June, the University crossed the first
hurdle in that process by being granted candidacy by the CSWE. The full accreditation
process could take as long as two years.
The MSW program began offering its first classes in the fall of 2000. The foursemester program is expected to graduate its first students in May of 2002.
In addition to President Pogue, faculty from the social work and
sociology/anthropology departments are expected to attend today’s celebration.

NEW COMMUNICATION LAB DEDICATED TODAY AT EDINBORO UNIVERSITY
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and its speech and communication studies
department will dedicate the new Computer Mediated Communication Lab today at 2 p.m.
The opening will take place in room 210, Compton Hall.
The facility houses computers, video editors and other technology to support the
education and professional preparation of communication studies and broadcast journalism
majors, and will also be offered to organizations in the region for communication workshops.
The lab was financed through a $188,000 grant from the Pennsylvania State System of
Higher Education.

EDINBORO’S 2001-2002 CONCERT AND LECTURE SERIES ANNOUNCED
Jazz pianist Kenny Werner will perform at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania
as part of the 2001-2002 Concert and Lecture Series on Wednesday, November 7, at 8
p.m. in the University Center. At the age of eleven, he recorded a single with a 15-piece
orchestra and appeared on television playing stride piano.
Werner has toured extensively with Archie Shepp, has had solo concerts in
Europe and New York City, and duos with such notables as Rufus Reid, Ray Drummond
and Jaki Byard. A 14-year association with bassist Ratzo Harris and drummer Tom
Rainey produced one of the most daring and innovative trios to ever play together.
Werner credits much of his musical development - conceptually and rhythmically - to
the experience of playing with Harris and Rainey. He has given clinics at many
universities in the United States and abroad and teaches privately as well.
The 2001-2002 Concert and Lectures Series is sponsored by Edinboro
University’s Student Government Association and Office of Cultural Affairs.
Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens. Edinboro

The presidents of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, Gannon University and
Mercyhurst College will take part in a luncheon discussion on student alcohol abuse on
Monday, November 5, at noon in Edinboro University’s Van Houten Dining Hall. The
Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board is sponsoring the event.
Joining Edinboro President Frank G. Pogue will be Gannon President Antoine
Garibaldi, Mercyhurst President William Garvey and representatives from Allegheny
College and Penn State Erie - the Behrend Campus.
The meeting is a project of the Healthy Lifestyles Committee, an inter-university
group composed of representatives from the four Erie County higher education
institutions. It is an opportunity for campus and community leaders to discuss pertinent
issues and pledge their ongoing commitment to addressing alcohol abuse among college
students.

U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT RECOGNIZES EDINBORO UNIVERSITY’S
ONLINE GRADUATE PROGRAM IN SPECIAL EDUCATION
U.S. News and World Report has recognized Edinboro University of
Pennsylvania for its graduate online program in special education. For its article, “Best of
the Online Grad Programs, the magazine surveyed college and university programs
nationwide.
The October 15 issue lists online programs in the fields of business, education,
engineering, library science, and public health. Edinboro University is one of 43
regionally accredited colleges and universities on the education list, and is the only
university in Pennsylvania so recognized.
Edinboro University s online program is a master’s degree in special education
that began offering its first course this fall to teachers in Pennsylvania, New York, and
Ohio. The entire program will be available online through the Internet with the exception
of a three-week summer residency in Edinboro. It is the first time the University has
offered a degree program online.
The University’s Dean of Education, Dr. Scott Baldwin, said, “This is a program
that serves students who are unable to attend classes on campus because they live in
remote locations or have significant family responsibilities.”

Unlike other U.S. News & World Report college rankings, this report combines
colleges and universities of all sizes together. Among the schools listed with Edinboro
University are George Washington University, Michigan State University, the University

EDINBORO ANNOUNCES PROVOST’S LECTURE SERIES
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania opens its new Provost’s Lecture Series on
Wednesday, October 24, with a presentation by Janies Fisher, criminal justice professor.
He served for six years as a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and
authored several books including two on the Lindbergh kidnapping case, which brought
him national attention. Fisher’s lecture begins at 7:30 p.m. in the University Center’s
multipurpose room. His book, “Fall Guys: False Confessions and the Politics of
Murder,” was nominated in 1997 for the Mystery Writers of America Edgar Allan Poe
Award in the Best Fact Crime category. His 1999 book, “The Ghosts of Hopewell,”
received an Edgar nomination. “Crimson Stain,” the story of murder in an Amish
community, is a national best seller in the true crime category.
As a criminal justice professor at Edinboro University, Fisher has taught criminal
investigation, criminalistics, security systems, and arson investigation, which includes
bombings and other terrorist acts. He also is the owner of a large security firm and has
appeared as a criminal justice expert and author on numerous television programs and
documentaries.
Dr. Max Azicri, professor of political science and criminal justice and an
internationally recognized scholar on Cuba and Latin America, will lecture on
Wednesday, November 14, at 3 p.m. in the University Center first floor seminar room. He
has published more than 120 scholarly articles in eleven countries around the world and is
the author of two books on Cuba, both of which are used as texts in universities

SOFIA ORTHODOX CHOIR TO PERFORM AT EDINBORO
The Sofia Orthodox Choir, under the direction of conductor Miroslav Popsavov,

Popsavov, one of the most distinguished Bulgarian conductors in the sphere of

EDINBORO UNIVERSITY HOSTS “HALLOWEEN MUSIC AND STORIES
FOR KIDS” AT THE BLASCO LIBRARY
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania Chamber Players and the music department
will present a free program, “Halloween Music and Stories for Kids,” at the Hirt
Auditorium of the Blasco Memorial Library on Saturday, October 27, at 10:30 a.m.
Wally Faas, radio host from WQLN, will be the guest Halloween narrator. Audience
members will interact with the performers throughout the program and are invited to
wear their Halloween costumes. This is the second year this successful program has been
presented at the Blasco Library.
Performers and audience will interact in stories and music portraying the spooky
as well as the fun side of Halloween. Edinboro University faculty and students will
perform the “Danse Macabre,” “Funeral March for a Marionette” (The Alfred Hitchcock
theme), Grieg’s “In the Hall of the Mountain King,” Bach’s “Toccata and Fugue,”
Rossini’s “Cat Duet,” and Henry Mancini’s theme from the “Pink Panther.” Children
will be invited to the stage at the conclusion of the program to try out many musical
instruments with the supervision of Edinboro University’s music students.
“Halloween Music and Stories for Kids” was made possible through the
Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts program of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a
state agency. It is funded by the citizens of Pennsylvania through an annual legislative
appropriation, and administered locally by the Arts Council of Erie, Inc. The
Pennsylvania Council on the Arts is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, a
federal agency.

EDINBORO HOLDS HOMECOMING 2001
“Monopoly” will be this year’s Edinboro University of Pennsylvania Homecoming
theme, welcoming students, alumni, families, friends and the community to the series of events
that mark the school’s annual fall celebration.
Tee time for the 10^^ Annual Alumni and Friends Golf Outing at Culbertson Hills Golf
Resort is 9 a.m. on Friday (October 12). Sponsored by the Edinboro University Alumni
Association, proceeds will go toward the Fighting Scot Statue project.
Also on Friday and again at Culbertson Hills, the traditional alumni reception - “The
Friday Night Bash” - begins at 8 p.m. Edinboro alumni Shawn and Jeani Fallon will provide the
music. The reception is free, but reservations are appreciated.
On Saturday, October 13, President and Mrs. Frank Pogue will host the traditional
“Brunch on the Lawn” at 10:30 a.m. under the reeeption tent on the Reeder Hall lawn along the
Meadville Street parade route.
The Homecoming parade will weave its way through Edinboro beginning at 11 a.m. with
floats decorated to salute this year’s “Monopoly” theme and marching units from across the
region.
Kickoff for Saturday’s Homecoming classic at Sox Harrison Stadium with the Fighting
Scots taking on the Clarion Golden Eagles is 2 p.m. The Homecoming king, queen and court, as
well as the winning floats, will be presented during pre-game ceremonies.
Homecoming 2001 closes on Sunday with the 10^^ Annual Tartan 5K Fun Run in Sox
Harrison Stadium. Registration at 8:30 a.m. with a $20 fee for participants who register at the
event.

Editor’s Note: The media are invited to join Edinboro University President Frank
G. Pogue and other administration and faculty for a “Cake-Cutting” ceremony today,
October 11, from 4 to 6 p.m. in Van Houten North dining hall. The event is to recognize
the progress to date in seeking accreditation for the University’s Master of Social Work
(MSW) program.
The University has applied for accreditation for its MSW program from the

NEW COMMUNICATION LAB DEDICATED TODAY AT EDINBORO UNIVERSITY
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and its speech and communication studies
department will dedicate the new Computer Mediated Communication Lab today at 2 p.m.
The opening will take place in room 210, Compton Hall.
The facility houses computers, video editors and other technology to support the
education and professional preparation of communication studies and broadcast journalism
majors, and will also be offered to organizations in the region for communication workshops.
The lab was financed through a $188,000 grant from the Pennsylvania State System of
Higher Education.
