FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
EDINBORO’S TEACHER EDUCATION SCHOOL
GAINS NATIONAL ACCREDITATION
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania President Frank G. Pogue has announced that
Edinboro’s School of Education has met the highest standards of the profession of teaching and
has received professional accreditation by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher
Education (NCATE).
“Shortly after I arrived on campus in July 1996, we made achievement of accreditation
by NCATE an institutional priority,” Pogue said. “When I received word on March 30 that we
had, in fact, achieved national accreditation, it marked a significant event in Edinboro’s 144-year
history, one that has a profound and positive influence on our students, our programs, our
teaching faculty, our administration and professional support staff, as well as to prospective
students and their families and graduates of our School of Education.”
Edinboro University’s history is rooted in teacher education. While it is now the largest
comprehensive institution of higher education in northwestern Pennsylvania, it began as a private
training academy for teachers in 1856 and opened as the Edinboro Normal School in 1857. It is
the oldest teacher education institution west of the Allegheny Mountains and the second oldest in
Pennsylvania.
Wrote NCATE president Arthur E. Wise in an April 9 letter to Pogue: “The recent
meeting of the NCATE Unit Accreditation Board culminates several years of preparation and

Teacher Education School Gains National Accreditation, Continued
Page 2
Edinboro University is one of 54 schools of education that received either initial or
continuing accreditation from NCATE in its most recent round of decisions. NCATE accredits
520 institutions; together they produce two-thirds of the nation’s new teacher graduates each
year.
NCATE-accredited schools must meet rigorous standards set by the profession and the
public. The standards emphasize teacher performance, reflect a consensus about what is
important in teacher preparation today, and focus on what teacher candidates should know and
be able to do.
Accreditation is the process by which the profession of teaching declares its expectations
for teacher education and applies these expectations to institutions that prepare members of the
profession of teaching. NCATE’s is a performance-based system with accreditation based on
results - results that demonstrate that a teacher candidate knows the subject matter and can teach
it effectively so that students learn.
The U.S. Department of Education recognizes NCATE as the professional accrediting
body for schools, departments and colleges of education. Accreditation decisions are earned out
by professionals from the education commxmity, including teachers, school specialists and
teacher educators, as well as members of the public and education policymakers.
“Our status in the field of teacher preparation, our ability to market our programs and
even our prospects for external fimding will be enhanced by the success,” said Pogue. “It is a
mark of distinction for not only the School of Education, but also for the entire Edinboro Family
and the State System of Higher Education.”

EDINBORO UNIVERSITY TO HOST CONGRESSIONAL
ART AWARDS RECEPTION SUNDAY
Each year, members of the U.S. House of Representatives join together to recognize the
artistic talents of American high school students in a nationwide art competition, with each
member of the House sponsoring a local or regional contest in his or her Congressional District.
Each House member brings the winning entry from the district’s competition back to
Washington for display in the annual exhibition in the U.S. Capitol Building.
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania has hosted the competition, week-long exhibition
and closing awards reception in all of the 18 years that the event has been held in northwestern
Pennsylvania, and will once again host the awards ceremony Sunday, April 29, 2-4 p.m., for “An
Artistic Discovery 2001,” the Congressional art competition sponsored by U.S. Rep. Phil English
for high school students in the 2U^ Congressional District.
The event will take place in the University Center Multipurpose room.
First, second and third prizes, as well as five honorable mentions, will be presented by
Congressman English and Edinboro University President Dr. Frank Pogue. All eight will receive
cash awards from Edinboro University, and all participants will receive a special certificate
signed by English and Pogue.
“An Artistic Discovery” each year provides members of Congress and the public the
opportunity to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of young Americans. Since the
competition was first launched in 1982, more than 4,500 local contests have been conducted and
have involved over 650,000 high school students. The opening national reception, when winning
artists and their families are invited to Washington to see their artworks hung in the Capitol
Building, has been attended by such luminaries as actor Tom Cruise and actress Sarah Jessica

NCATE ACCREDITS SPECIAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
The National Council of Accreditation of Teacher Education program and the
Council for Exceptional Children has recently accredited the Department of Special
Education and School Psychology at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.
In the mid-1990s, the department decided to seek certification by the CEC, which
had recently revised and expanded its set of professional standards for special education
teachers.
The initial application requested accreditation of each of the four different but
related programs of the study. Although the initial plan was not approved, the program
continued to make improvements accordingly. Because of the amount of time involved
in the process the department agreed to focus the efforts on a single program of study, the
undergraduate special education teacher certification program.
The undergraduate Special Education program prepares students to teach children
in grades K-12 who have disabilities (with the exceptions of hearing and visual
impairments). The program is designed to culminate in a Bachelor of Science degree in
Education as well as in certification as a special education teacher.

EDINBORO UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR INVITED TO BAY OF PIGS CONFERENCE
As today marks the 40^ anniversary of the Bay of Pigs invasion in Cuba, Edinboro
University of Pennsylvania was one of only seven American institutions invited to last month’s
international conference in Cuba commemorating the event. Political science professor Dr. Max
Azicri, a former Cuban citizen and renowned scholar on Cuba, represented Edinboro University.
The other schools invited to attend were Harvard University, American University, Brown
University, George Washington University, and Johns Hopkins University, as well as the Council
on International Relations.
Attending the conference, which was hosted by Cuban President Fidel Castro, were a
virtual Who’s Who of people who were key participants in the ill-fated invasion that began on
April 17,1961. Among those attending were Arthur Schlesinger Jr., a member of President John
F. Kennedy’s cabinet who advised against the invasion; Robert Reynolds, the CIA bureau chief
in Miami in 1961; Sam Halpem, the CIA agent in charge of Operation Mongoose that attempted
to eliminate Castro; Wayne Smith, who headed the U.S. embassy in Havana until shortly before
the invasion; Alfredo Duran, one of the brigade commanders leading the invasion; and current
Cuban Vice President Jose R. Fernandez, the officer who coordinated Cuba’s forces.
Others attending the conference were Jean Kennedy Smith, sister of President Kennedy,
and many journalists including Daniel Schorr of National Public Radio.
As a result of participating in the Conference, Edinboro University is one of only seven
institutions in the United States presented with sets of declassified invasion documents from the

U.S., Cuba, the Soviet Union, Britain, and several other countries. Also, Edinboro University and
the other American institutions received a complete set of videos from the two-day conference.
Azicri is an internationally recognized authority on contemporary Cuba. He is the author
of “ Cuba: Politics Economics and Society,” and “Cuba Today and Tomorrow: Reinventing
Socialism.” He received a doctorate of law degree from the University of Havana, and
postgraduate degrees in political science from the University of Southern California. He has
traveled with Castro, participated in the Havana Dialogue Conference as part of the CubanAmerican delegation, and conducted field research frequently in Cuba.

ARTIST TO SPEAK AT EDINBORO UNIVERSITY

special topics that artist Fred Wilson will present at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.
Wilson will speak at 6 p.m. on April 11 in Doucette Hall room 119, followed by a

Wilson, resident of Bronx, New York, became internationally known in 1993 with
his installation, “Mining the Museum”, collaboratively supported by Baltimore’s modem
art institution The Contemporary and the Maryland Historical Society. According to
Curator Lisa G. Corrin, Wilson examined, “the ideological apparatus of the museum in
general” and explored “how one museum in particular has ignored the histories of people
of color.”
Wilson’s rich ancestry, including an African-American lineage informs much of
his work. He has been honored with numerous grants and awards including a National

Wilson was originally invited to Erie to serve as a juror for the 78^ Annual Spring

EDINBORO UNIVERSITY TO HOST FIRST ANNUAL JOURNALISM DAY
More than 100 area high school students and advisers from eight area schools are
expected to take part in the first annual Journalism Day at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania
on Wednesday, April 4. Students from Corry, Fairview, Fort LeBoeuf, Harbor Creek, Iroquois,
Meadville, Seneca and Youngsville high schools will attend sessions on news writing and
journalism ethics at the all-day event.
Erie Times-News reporter Jeff Pinski and Meadville Tribune writer Marianne OberleyOrris will deliver the keynote address at noon in the University Center. They will discuss the
growing field ofjournalism and share their personal perspectives.
Edinboro University recently announced the creation of two new journalism degree
programs: print journalism and broadcast journalism. They will focus on new trends in
journalism that are blurring the traditional distinctions among news media.
The demand for journalism programs is strong nationwide and is consistently among the
top 25 most popular programs of study. No other college in northwestern Pennsylvania offers a
degree program in journalism and no other school in the State System of Higher Education offers
dual programs in the field.
During Journalism Day, the University will announce an annual journalism contest for
high school students. The contest, which will take place in the fall, will present awards for news
writing, feature writing, photojournalism, layout, and design.

Wise in an April 9 letter to Pogue: “The recent
meeting of the NCATE Unit Accreditation Board culminates several years of preparation and
deliberation by your institution and by NCATE [and] you are to be congratulated for completing
this professional endeavor. Let me take this opportunity to congratulate you and your
professional education unit for displaying the high quality necessary to be granted national
accreditation.”

ART AWARDS RECEPTION SUNDAY
Each year, members of the U.S. House of Representatives join together to recognize the

Pennsylvania, and will once again host the awards ceremony Sunday, April 29, 2-4 p.m., for “An

for high school students in the 2U^ Congressional District.
The event will take place in the University Center Multipurpose room.

competition was first launched in 1982, more than 4,500 local contests have been conducted and
have involved over 650,000 high school students. The opening national reception, when winning
artists and their families are invited to Washington to see their artworks hung in the Capitol

Black history, contemporary art and cultural issues in historical museums are
special topics that artist Fred Wilson will present at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.
Wilson will speak at 6 p.m. on April 11 in Doucette Hall room 119, followed by a
reception at the annual Edinboro University Student Art Exhibit in Bruce Gallery.
Endowment for the Arts Award and the MacArthur “genius” Fellowship.
Wilson was originally invited to Erie to serve as a juror for the 78^ Annual Spring
Show at the Erie Art Museum. The Art Department’s visiting artist and speaker
committee has organized his visit to Edinboro University.
This event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Lisa
Gleason at (814) 452-8401.

They will discuss the

degree program in journalism and no other school in the State System of Higher Education offers
dual programs in the field.
During Journalism Day, the University will announce an annual journalism contest for
high school students. The contest, which will take place in the fall, will present awards for news
writing, feature writing, photojournalism, layout, and design.

Family and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts by Edinboro University of
Pennsylvania President Frank Pogue and Arts Council Chair Susan Kemenyffy at
the recent unveiling of a 10-foot original mural in the McKean Elementary School

school’s fourth graders in collaboration with lifelong McKean resident Steadman,
a 1982 Edinboro University alumnus and former McKean Elementary student
who serves as artist-in-residence at the school. The work, which depicts children
who for the past 200 years have walked the same ground as the current students,
was funded by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the General McLane School
District, and the McKean Elementary Parent Teachers Organization.
