ANDY RICHTER OPENS EDINBORO’S 1997-98 CONCERT AND LECTURE SERIES
Late Night sidekick Andy Richter will open Edinboro University of Pennsylvania’s
1997-98 Concert and Lecture Series with a multi-media lecture extravaganza on Monday,
September 22, at 8 p.m. in Memorial Auditorium. The multi-talented actor, writer and comedian
is the right hand man on NBC’s Late Night with Conan O’Brien. His lecture - “How To Be a
Talk Show Sidekick” - will showcase highlights from Late Night’s first three years.
Edinboro’s Concert and Lecture Series is the University’s year-long program featuring
outstanding speakers, performers and entertainers from around the world.
The Arkansas Repertory Theatre will follow Richter with its performance of Smoke on
the Mountain, a bluegrass musical celebration of the rural south in the 1930s. Set in a rural
Baptist church in North Carolina in 1938, the two-act gospel musical comedy will come to
Edinboro on Tuesday, October 28.
Acclaimed flutist Paula Robison will perform as a guest soloist with the Budapest
Strings on Tuesday, November 4. A virtuoso performer with remarkable skill and range,
Robison plays works from Bach and Mozart to Stephen Foster, Grieg, and Copland to
traditional songs such as Greensleeves. Critics have raved over her performances with one
writer for the Boston Globe saying: “One meets remarkable human accomplishments every
day, but Miss Robison showed me things I hadn’t known the machine could do.”
From its start as a septet at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest, the Budapest
Strings has become an award-winning 16-member ensemble featuring the works of fellow
countrymen Weiner and Bartok. In 1982 the group won the International Chamber Orchestra
Competition in Belgrade.

The first concert of 1998 will feature the keyboard pyrotechnics of pianist Leon Bates, a
classically trained performer who is also a bodybuilder. Bates lifts weights for two hours a day
before practicing on the piano for another six. His appearance at Edinboro University on
Wednesday, February 4, may feature works by such composers as Rachmaninoff and Gershwin
as well as Rossini, Ravel and Ellington. He has performed with America’s leading symphonies
including the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the
National Symphony and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He has appeared on the Today Show
with Bryant Gumble and on CBS Sunday Morning with the late Charles Kuralt and Eugenia
Zukerman.
Voice of the Turtle, North America’s premiere Sephardic musical ensemble, will bring
its special blend of Judeo-Spanish music to Edinboro on Wednesday, February 25. The quartet
of two men and two women have been performing for nearly 20 years on several medieval and
renaissance instruments including saz, bombard, vielle, shawm, oud and chalumeau. Their
music is world music - a cultural blend of Arabic, Spanish and eastern European.
The Concert and Lecture Series will conclude on Tuesday, March 10, with award
winning columnist Lisa Jones, the best-selling author of Bulletproof Diva: Tales of Race, Sex
and Hair. The daughter of a Black-nationalist father and Jewish intellectual mother, Jones
brings her unique perspective to the lecmre stage for a rare look at the issues which confront
Black women in the 90s. Jones has been a staff writer at the Village Voice since 1990. Her
award-winning column on race and the politics of style appears monthly.
All performances will take place at 8 p.m. in Memorial Auditorium. Tickets will be

artist Eileen Doktorski.
“Moving Metal” an exhibition of jewelry, functional hoUowware and sculpmre will show the
great breadth of work beini produced in the field of metals today. Exhibition curator Suzanne
Amendolara has chosen artists who represent the sculptural and conceptual concerns present in
contemporary metal work without ignoring work that builds on the rich history of design and
importance of function in craft objects. The list of artists - both established and emerging - include
Jocelyn Chateauvert, Yosuke Inoue, Christine Clark, Alix Mikesell, Ben Cunningham, David
Pimentel, Harriete Estel Berman, Chris Ramsey, Pat Hynn, and Rebecca Reimers Cristol.

“.. .a bat with an iron-like patina, has a cast of a woman’s stiletto-heeled shoe aggressively attached
to its end. Displayed diagonally on the wall like medieval swords or axes, it is both ornament and

into aesthetic images of our imagination rather than artifacts of a violent acl "

Critics have raved over her performances with one

day, but Miss Robison showed me things I hadn’t known the machine could do.”
From its start as a septet at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest, the Budapest

BRUCE GALLERY OPENS FALL SEASON WITH TWO ART EXHIBITIONS
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania’s Bruce Gallery will present two art shows from
September 3 to September 27: “Moving Metal: An Invitational Exhibition of Contemporary
Metals,” and “Weapons in Disguise and Questionable Trophies, an Exhibition of Sculpture,” by
artist Eileen Doktorski.
Doktorski’s exhibition - a combination of objects and cast body parts - invites the viewer to
investigate touch, fear, protection and privacy. In describing one piece (Grand Slam), Doktorski said
“.. .a bat with an iron-like patina, has a cast of a woman’s stiletto-heeled shoe aggressively attached
to its end. Displayed diagonally on the wall like medieval swords or axes, it is both ornament and
weapon. Seductive surfaces of paint, metal leaf and metallic powders make these other-real objects
into aesthetic images of our imagination rather than artifacts of a violent acl "
Doktorski will present a lecture about her sculpture on Wednesday,
16 p.m.,
in Bmce Gallery immediately before the opening reception at 7 p.m. Bruce Gallery hours are
2-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday, and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday evenings. For more information call
